Buying activity dipped slightly from the previous week for numismatic products, according to the latest figures from the United States Mint, though several items still posted strong gains. The U.S. Mint’s release of the Army Bronze Medal last week likely drew attention to other products. However, the medal’s specific performance remains unknown, as sales figures for Mint bronze products are not disclosed.
Beyond the week’s top sellers, the 2024-S Morgan & Peace Silver Dollar Reverse Proof Set stood out in the report with a notable decline in sales. Released Nov. 21, the two-coin set – which includes a 2024-S Reverse Proof Morgan Silver Dollar and a 2024-S Reverse Proof Peace Silver Dollar – launched with four-day sales of 149,346 units. It added another 13,119 during its first full week, but sales fell by 14,707 units in its second full week, bringing its total to 147,758.

AKBob’s lovely Bride is chasing him down the street with broom stick in hand for buying the first 10 Privy’s…, I sure hope we hear from Bob soon.., it’s s wilderness out there…. God Bless! 😉
KCSO,
Is the coast clear yet, lol! I kinda wish that was the case. I saw 11 or 12 for sale on EBay already. Basically they’re $50K – $65K. Good luck with that. If you couldn’t or wouldn’t bid more than mid $30K range in the Auction yesterday, what makes them think they’ll flip these for $50K-$65K. That makes no Cents to Me, lol! ;).

Congratulations also to Kaiser Wilhelm and REB for your “Honorable Mention”s.
What fun! Not only did I not get a FHG but I didn’t even get a virtual one! LOL.
Thanks KCSO for the fun.
Thanks, Antonio, for the congratulations. My virtual virtual should be on its way.
Wow! Irrational Exuberance on steroids!
Then again, I’ve been wrong about many things in life, and right about other things that I didn’t act on but wish I had.
So, to quote the late great Chuck Berry:
“C’est la vie” say the old folks
It goes to show you never can tell
I bought silver Wheato stock in 2007 for <$3….. eventually hit $80+++. I sold half, my mistake, only bought 300 shares… :>(
I won, I won, I won!!!!! Thank you for posting the results. I look forward to the two virtual FHG privy’s with bows coming my way. I might see if Ventris will take them as a down payment towards other US Mint trinkets and baubles. If not, I can still bask in the glow of making stuff up and somehow being close to correct!!
Well Congrats, got hits on both #’s.., so don’t go run off any where.., come 2026, I’ll need to consult with you Sir on the 2026 1804 Bustie release… Will need to know – 1. Congratulations @ECG for your prediction. Thanks @KCSO for tabulating all the numbers. Sort of a fun conclusion to the auction.
And the best part of the virtual bidding…it was virtually free!
Congrats, East Coast Guru, on your primo guestimates! Perhaps the virtual FHG Privies will arrive in virtual red oak boxes. Approaching virtual ecstasy!
What a difference just one year makes. Look at the sales for the week ending Dec 10, 2023. In discounting #1 which was just released, top sellers #2-#10 accounted for 23,889 sales (versus 19,178 sales for #1-#10 for the week ending Dec 8, 2024). Looking at just silver products, it’s 11,045 for Dec 10, 2023 vs. 7,077 for Dec 8, 2024: a reduction of 3,968 or 35.9%. And there was no commemorative silver dollar issued in 2023 to make the list unlike in 2024. Is it belt tightening or lack of interest or both? US Mint Sales: Uncirculated 2023 Mint… Read more »

I completely stopped All Mint purchases =losses for Vemtri$
I’m pretty much done with Mint purchases as well! I just don’t want to pay their premiums any longer nor participate in the games. The Mint is going down the road like the RCM. Colored coins, circus coins, comic coins, etc., what’s next besides crappy designs by people that are weirdos I mean Artists! What’s even worse is the Mint, CACC buys into these designs! Way too many designs on coins that are the same (quarters), AI coins, producing millions of coins that don’t even circulate. Us collectors that purchase numi coins are footing the bill for the clad, bullion… Read more »
Although the FHG Privy is beautiful, 25K+ would be better well spent on an original 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar in EF. At least you would have a coin with history ( possibly even held by a Founding Father). The Smithsonian probably won’t even want the FHG Privy for the National Coin Collection just like the restrikes from melted SS Central America gold bars. When all the hoopla dies down the only real appreciation on this contrived “rarity” will be based on its intrinsic value. Hope 30K/oz gold comes soon!
Howard K,
Did you mean to say gold at 30K or 3K an ounce?
AKBob, I passed on the privies. I had my finger on the bid button (for $33k to $35k on several of them) but just didn’t want (or need) any of them bad enough to enter the bid. I’ve still got some pricey items I actually want to buy this year that I can use regularly versus putting another shiny object in my safe. Plus, I had initially asked for a $25k bid limit from S&B, but they raised it to $35k and isn’t it ‘curious’ that most of the coins fell within that price point. I think most of the… Read more »
Craig,
There’s reasonable capitalism, and then there’s outrageous “capitalism”. It appears to me the flippers have embraced the latter.
Kaiser,
I guess they no longer want to make a $1000 or so on each item they sell, now it’s $10,000 – $20,000!
One of the last good mint item I got were the Buffalo Fractionals and sets and singles. The 10th z is a good Buffalo Nickel
REB,
did you participate in the FHG Privy auction? Please reply!
Here’s mine below! Not top shelf, but not the bottom either.
Coins #1 to #53 were of particular interest to me, so I’m pleased as can be to get #32…
I’m running on fumes, in more ways than one lol. More later!……
.
did you participate in the FHG Privy auction? I did. After being incredibly mopey for a couple of weeks after the FHG “sellout” fiasco, I realized that the continuity of my collection actually makes me happy. When I’m happy, those around me are generally happier too. So, I bought the FHG on Ebay for a negotiated best-offer price of $4,300. Then I bought the Morgan/Peace reverse-proof set with my loyalty free shipping discount with the Mint. Next up … the FHG auction yesterday afternoon. I had never done an auction before. On Coin #3 I decided to do a test… Read more »
REB and Rick, and to think that guy who bought the banana duct-taped to the wall could have gone for the whole lot of 230 instead. He should be kicking himself. In all seriousness, I’d say you hit the ball out of the park. While I’m yelling “Stella!” and “I could have been a contender!” (mixing up my different Brando movie quotes) you both are the real deal. Congrats!
Thanks,
Baked beans and begging is in order here!
REB,
Congratulations!
You got one for a pretty good price there. At the end of the auction the 69 coins shot back up.
I’m glad you didn’t give up on your substantial proof collection!
Curious to know, is there any sales tax charged on auctions? I hope not, as the US Mint doesn’t charge any on regular sales
They waived the 20% Buyers Premium, and State Sales Tax (I presume some loop hole, special treatment as it was a USM product, or the mint ate the tax, and the SB premium, what ever that may have been)
No state tax in CA Gruesome allows numismatic purchases over $2k to be tax free. He makes up the difference with ga$ taxes and gas @$5 a gallon still
Congratulations @Rick and @REB
Thanks VinnieC, KC, and gang
Ditto what Rick said.
Koufax coin….. congratulations
fyi, you left out the week’s top seller in your otherwise excellent summary.
William, that’s a good catch on 24GC which I’m surprised to see on the Dec 8 sales report since it wasn’t officially released until Dec 10.
Congrats to Rick & Reb for their winning bids.., that’s sweet! So.., exactly how many FHG’s did the mint sell at the auction yesterday? These would be the ‘run of the mill,’ ‘minion examples,’ ‘the low end,’ & ‘the one the USM leadership shut me out of in 3 minutes,’ FHG’s… that sold for $3,640, I was curious, as to what yesterday translated into.., as to quote many of you fine Gentlemen.., “they left 7,250 on the hand” & “why in the Hell would they do that?!” So, pulling out the outliers, specifically #1 ($440k) & #230 ($90k) = $530,… Read more »
Ooops, should be “they left 7,270 on the table”
The email from Stack’s Bowers stated that “In total, the auction achieved $8,230,000 in realized prices—an outstanding result!”
Whoopie
House Take (or Total Take the USM could have achieved) Gross proceeds…
HAD the USM struck all 17,270 plus the 230 Privies..?
Well let’s see what they did achieve –
(10,000 x $3,640) + $8,282,000 = $44,682,000 (Gross proceeds achieved)
Full mintage struck of 17,270 x $3,640 = $62,862,800 + $8,282,000 = $71,144,800
A delta of: $26,462,800 left on the table….
In comparison, the proceeds of the 7,270 left on the table of $26,462,800 to Privy proceeds of $8,282,000 is 219.5% greater than the auction gross take, food for thought….
With that…, in the Spring of 2025, when the US Mint Annual Report comes out..,
If AR’24 isn’t farting Dixie, Daisies, & Bluebirds…, I’d be finding me a new Director
Nothing like a high-priced auction to go from red to black.
I hope auctions aren’t the new normal for the Mint. As much as I hate being shut out of high-demand/low mintage releases, at least there was a chance of landing one at the regular Mint release price.
I enjoyed the auction and I luckily had the means to buy one of these high-priced shiny objects. BUT, I MUCH prefer the L&B tinplate (or at least, the originally intended tinplate). That is, mint to order over a defined period (one month, one week, one day). And THAT order total becomes the final mintage. I believe that everyone who wants a new Mint product should be given the opportunity to buy one from THE MINT. Obviously, buyers will be constrained by their own personal financial situations. However, a buyer should be able to buy NEW products from the Mint… Read more »
REB, I wish you were running the Mint!
I don’t think that nomination’s coming through anytime in the near future.
REB,
It all depends on whether or not you’ve picked the right politician to slide a wad of big bills into his or her pocket.
Reb, just saw this post see above except for mint to order, I fired the USM. I could support 48 or 72 hour order window. Heck, me and many were hot on the FHG for months, and get a stick in the eye as a reward…go AP$
Yep. I spent several minutes on 11/14 in the “waiting room” only to find out that FHG had flown the coop (golden hair and all).
I could afford most and passed easy. Any mint mode r auction pass, any non MINT TO ORDER items…hard pass. Bust gold May b tuff to ignore. But by then it will have a $2k premium I suspect and more sales to APs and auction
WOOOOOOSSSSSSH!
Did you hear it? The sound of $8M being sucked out of the collector coin market in just one day.
Think about that.
E 1, you make an interesting point. But I’m not so sure it’s necessarily the same crowd. Sure there’s some overlap, evident by regulars here. By and large though I’d bet that the ones collecting top-of-the-line gold coins are not the ones filling Dansco albums or collecting slabbed circulating coins, or even silver. Just my hunch, nothing more.
I think you’re on to something here, Major D. I was a rookie to the art of a coin auction going in but I noticed plenty of the floor bids fell into a tight range – roughly $32k to $34k for the PR70s. I know these lots were pretty much the same thing but I thought that lack of variance was interesting. Much of this initial action appeared to be coming from in-person, phone, and proxy bids. Half-increment bidding seemed to frequently land on the winning number ($32 to $33 and $34 to $35). To me, many of the bidders… Read more »
Major D, We’re talking about a very large amount of money being quickly drawn away from a finite collector’s market to a new type of coin market with a very small number of extremely rare coins. This venue was highly successful for the mint. Do you think they will try it again? If they do, then at what frequency? Once a year? Twice a year? This could be highly disruptive to the classic coin market if it becomes a common occurrence that classic coin buyers cannot resist out of logic. I am hoping this was just a once in a… Read more »

While they’re at it, why not replace the Lincoln Cent with the Flying Eagle Cent?
E !,
Oh I think this is just the start for mint rarities going to the auction block. If they can generate $8.2M in a couple hours of auctioning, why in the world would they end it there? One thing I know from experience is government entities love money. I, for one, hope to see more coins going to auction, but I hope they go in OGP condition.
I wonder if OGP condition would be tricky for the auction company – a pig-in-a-poke kind of uncertainty that they’re not fond of. I’m a little surprised that the Mint didn’t cull the 45 69PFs and just auction 230 PF70s.
E 1, I fear the Mint will do the auctions time and again because it was such a money maker. I hope I’m wrong, but I see it as a yearly thing from now on. So, I agree it will take away from the other Mint offerings and possibly supplant them altogether in the future.
I fear both you and E 1 may be correct here. However, I can’t see any more than two or three, at most, auctions a year. This minuscule 230-coin auction took nearly three hours to complete. And that doesn’t include the prep time by the auction house and the grading. Any auction offering will have to be small (not more than 1,000 lots/coins) to be easily doable. I’ll be the first to admit that the Mint has too much product out there. My collecting interest is precious metals proofs. After perusing the 2025 slate, I have EIGHTEEN DIFFERENT ORDERS to… Read more »
Major D:
Your quarter stats in the other article’s comments section underscore my point – too many quarter designs make none of them particularly special or noteworthy.
Agree REB-1 design per year would be enough
I believe that the US Mint will continue to effectively compete with the Classic US Coin Market. As can be confirmed by the Mint’s phenomenal marketing job they did with the 2024 Flowing Hair Dollars. It should be obvious that serious thought and planning went into this release.
.
Past observations:
Walking Liberty Half Dollars became ASEs.
St Gaudens Double Eagles became AGEs.
Classic Morgans became Modern Morgans.
Classic Peace Dollars became Modern Peace Dollars
1794 Flowing Hair Dollars became 2024 Flowing Hair Dollars.
.
The modern obviously benefited from the historical. But will the historical benefit from the modern?
Maybe. A friend of mine priced out a 1794 FH Dollar for me. I was tempted … for a minute.
It’s a 1795 silver Dollar (below), but you get the idea..
Just yesterday the hammer dropped at $247,500.00
Wow
https://www.greatcollections.com/Coin/1712134/1795-Flowing-Hair-Silver-Dollar-Silver-Plug-PCGS-AU-58-CAC-Green
The modern replicas will no doubt boost the classics, just as the classics have boosted the moderns imo.
Wow, indeed. But the history major in me always wonders what it would be like to hold and possess a coin like that.
The four coins I now have my eyes on are the first and last half eagles from Dahlonega and Charlotte (1838-D, 1838-C, 1861-D, and 1861-C). A few years ago, I visited the old Dahlonega courthouse, where the mint museum is located. They had a complete set of the mint’s gold coins. The building was constructed with local bricks embedded with flecks of gold. In the afternoon sunlight, the building twinkled. The whole experience was mind-blowing.
Wow those 4 coins would be amazing to own and hold as well, and good luck with your pursuit!
Same with the Dahlonega Gold museum, it sounds amazing.
I’m going on a work road trip to Raleigh/Durham, and possibly the Charlotte airport in a month or two. I think I know where I’ll visit as I head back west!
E 1,
In the strictly numismatic sense, modern versions of old classics are effectively replicas.
Kaiser, I agree and would say it applies to a lot of what we have been buying, from the Morgan and Peace to the American Eagle and American Buffalo It used to be that coins were designed and made first and foremost to be circulated. Nowadays, so-called coins are made to never be touched and/or to get encased in plastic. So, when the intrinsic value is so far above the face value, I would argue that for all intents and purposes they’re not coins so much as rounds or medals or tokens. I know that saying this will cause a… Read more »
Completely agree. But haven’t many “collectible” (uncirculated/proof) coins been separated from circulation for decades? I suppose some ripped open their sets back in the day to buy candy with the change but most left them encased in their holders/packages. I will freely admit that more coins produced now have absolutely no connection to circulation but as long as I’ve been alive, now over six decades, there have been “special” coins that were valued considerably over what their face value reflected.
A collection of well considered ideas Kaiser and Major D. In addition I wonder about the very concept of making new collectibles, whether metal rounds by private or public mints, ceramic figurines or bean filled dolls. Can something that was never intended to be used have a lasting value? Part of collecting is a personal connection between the collector and the object of desire, but part is knowing there are others that want the object too and are willing to pay for it.
