Precious metals rose modestly on Tuesday, following a day of losses where silver marked a nearly two-and-a-half month low and gold headed backwards after bouncing for two consecutive sessions from its weakest point since mid December.
Gold for February delivery edged up by $3.60, or 0.2%, to settle at $2,025.80 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"Gold and silver prices are slightly up in midday U.S. trading Tuesday, on mild corrective bounces following recent selling pressure," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.
"A rally in the U.S. dollar index and an up-tick in U.S. Treasury yields today did limit the upside in the precious metals," Wyckoff noted.
Gold futures traded between $2,020.80 and $2,039.30. On Monday, they shed 0.4%.
Meanwhile, silver for March delivery climbed by 16.6 cents, or 0.7%, to settle $22.462 an ounce. Silver futures ranged from $22.16 to $22.58. They fell by 1.8% on Monday, ending at their lowest price since Nov. 10.

April platinum advanced by $2.50, or 0.3%, to $905.50 an ounce, trading between $900.10 and $917.10.
- Palladium for March delivery added $6.30, or 0.7%, to $946.80 an ounce, ranging from $929 to $965.50.
