‘greatest generation’ – are there any left, and if so what do they think of a coin commemorating them?

Craig

It looks like the mint will be pressing RP Morgans/Peace dollars every year. I’m just getting one set this year instead of two, no sense wasting more money than necessary.

CaliSkier

Well, there is this play potentially for some? Interesting?

So I just checked Pinehurst Coins and they are offering up a $20 bounty, per 2023 RP Mor/Pea sets. This tells me that PH Coins, “is Not” a member of the glorious Authorized Purchaser “Big Playas’l club. Otherwise they’d be subjecting themselves to possible suspension from the program.

Or and the “Or” is a “No Possible Way”, the US Mint
did not or isn’t offering up 10% of inventory to the AP/ABPP peeps.

Dazed and Coinfused

Looks like the 2 coin limited morgan peace set is gonna be an annual RP edition. I wonder how long the MP collection will trudge on. No item info for lots of this stuff. Or mintage details. Might just forego MP subscription and just get 2 coin set each year. Or maybe just collect this year’s.

7 Harriet tubman offerings. Let’s see how fast they sell out. I’m putting my money on 2030 and will take the over.

But the fiji morgan and peace did so well. Just ask magic mike

Craig

Did you see where Magic Mike is offering a complete date set of MS70 CC Morgans, including the 1886CC, 1887CC, and 1888CC, for only $2399.00? Once again, it’s Fiji to the rescue. I think I’m only going to buy 1 of the 2023 RP Morgan/Peace sets instead of the 2 I have on subscription so that I can save some money for those beautiful Harriet Tubman coins next year. Be still, my beating heart!

Dazed and Coinfused

7 coins, offerings for 1 woman and 7 coins, offering for an entire generation.

CaliSkier

Dazed and Coinfused, I’d just like to say, I enjoy reading your posts, comments, opinions, takes, essay’s, diatribes, etc, more often than not. Thanks for taking the time to pen and share your thoughts!

Dazed and Coinfused

Thanks. People on political sites don’t know squat about coins. But the coin folk here have vast experience with politics. So a better understanding of when and what to buy. These so called experts of economics seem to miss all these recessions and crashes, and housing market crushes and fuel rations and food rations. Kids today are oblivious to just how different the world was just 100 years ago. Cars and planes new. Few roads. Only movie theaters had air conditioning. Alcohol was illegal. Women barely could vote. Children working in factories and refineries, and steel mills, not making shoes,… Read more »

I remember when a call was still a dime and collect was free (other party pays).

Antonio

Also phone booths were great shelters for when there’s a sudden rain storm. I miss them for that if for nothing else.

Jeff Legan

Hi Kaiser Wilhelm, Probably a pretty large percentage still. I am almost positive anyone 50 and over would remember them, possibly down to somewhere in the 40s age range. In 20 more years I bet few will remember them. The Tardis is a Police Call Box, by the way. Somewhat different in function (you could only call the police with them), and they certainly look different than our phone booths. I have been a Doctor Who fan since I first saw the show on PBS in the early 1980s. I grew up on a 7 acre farm my 25 year… Read more »

CaliSkier

Jeff, thanks for adding versus subtracting from the exchanges! Your relaying, of finding or actively searching the phone booth and surrounding area, brought back fond memories of similar exploits. That more or less ended for me when reports of, “disturbed” people putting syringe’s or hypodermic needles into the change return slot. What in the ….. is wrong with people. We are all a little off, but Cmon!

You get the feeling the government is pretty much Q.

It’s not a Tardis? Oh I see, it doesn’t have the blue sides.

Antonio

Ah, the good ole days. Vienna has certainly changed. Austria is part of the EU, the Shilling has been replaced by the Euro, and Austria is neutral and not a member of NATO (as is Switzerland and Liechtenstein).

CaliSkier

Thank you Kaiser Wilhelm for the detailed recall of times of yesteryear! Your description of living conditions definitely made me reflect and how relatively good I and or we or most of us have here in the USA. I just have a more and more difficult time as I ponder, what the USA has evolved into over my adulthood(18 y/o+) which equates to 36 years. I’m not saying I’ve set any records, nor had any earth shattering inventions, at least I haven’t made things any worse and can be counted on to do the right thing. More and more, I… Read more »

Kaiser,

Lol. “I got a rock.” – Charlie Brown, (The Halloween tv special).

NumisdudeTX

CaliSkier

Wasn’t the “Rock of Aging” a song by Def Leppard or a movie with Jack Black or something??? LOL

Jeff Legan

Hi Kaiser Wilhelm,
I learned my lesson a few months ago. I copy my comment before I hit “post”.

CaliSkier

Yes Jeff, that is a good way to keep from having to open a “Missing Post” case. Another suggestion would be to paste that “copied” comment in a word doc, note or something similar, to make sure you highlighted or copied what it was you wanted, in its entirety. I’ve used the copy feature before, also to find out that in my eagerness to post, had copied something else before dumping what was on my clipboard. Those ones really hurt as you were conscious enough to copy, then copied over it before placing somewhere you could retrieve it from. Anyhow,… Read more »

Hi Kaiser Wilhelm, There may be other ways to do this, I am actually not very computer literate either, but this is how I do it. Put your cursor at the very start of your comment. Hold your left mouse button down and slide your mouse to the bottom of your comment until all of it is highlighted. Release the button, it should stay highlighted. Mine highlights in blue. Make sure the cursor is anywhere over the highlighted area, or at least pretty close to it. Now click the right mouse button to bring up a menu. One of the… Read more »

Truly an awesome post Jeff! Great explanation of how to copy and paste. Hopefully Kaiser tries out a few examples and get this “New Tool” added to his repertoire! I often will use a similar process, while looking for an appropriate or what I think, may prove amusing, meme to attach. Not sure about me being much more computer literate or not? 1 thing I truly love about computers though, is that more often than not, there are multiple ways of “skinning”/filleting the fish! I’ll often send or save a meme image to my photos(phone) then select the image from… Read more »

Hi CaliSkier, “1 thing I truly love about computers though, is that more often than not, there are multiple ways of “skinning”/filleting the fish!“—And what I love is that no matter which way you choose, none of them are wrong, just different. Good suggestions about Kaiser Wilhelm practicing. You do beat me on computer literacy. I know nothing about modern phones. I thought old tethered phones were intrusive. When I was in my late 20s my friend shared a house for a while with a guy that must have felt like I do (or owed bill collectors). It had a… Read more »

Why oh why did I find that article and read the crap you “guys” all posted? Thanks Jeff for trying to “help me” understand what has or is transpiring. Now I’m going to be blatantly and brutally honest. You, nor I can or will change others actions, words or thoughts, especially those you have a beef with here on Coin News. Unfortunate, but true, IMO. Now the brutal part, I have not done DD(due diligence?) on many topics, yet post. I do try hard to stick to or gather as many facts as possible. I am also not a fan… Read more »

Hi Caliskier, Not as long as it looks, I pasted a lot of yours. Bolded the “—-‘s” so you can see where my comments start. “I don’t know what the law stipulates, however we need to stop immediately letting people into our country, giving them life fee, medical care, jobs and an apparent immigration meeting or something of the like in the far distant future. Then set free to roam and do as they please, or at least it appears that way. Now politically speaking, we are completely screwed in this realm, no matter what the facts or side of… Read more »

Hey Kaiser Wilhelm, no problem, it’s the thought that counts, right! Anyhow, over the pas many years I have lost or had other problems with a lengthy post I’d spent quite a bit of time composing, rephrasing, editing, finding and adding factoids, then having my hard go, “BYE, Bye”! In my case or often in my case, I’ve been victim do a dying or dead phone in the midst of my composition. Then once power comes back on, the screen often refreshes itself and GONE, see you later, 10-20 minutes of relatively well thought out composition. I used to get… Read more »

You’re welcome Kaiser Wilhelm! This meme was attached due to looking like Mt Tom in the Eastern Sierra, just a few mile outside Bishop CA near the “Buttermilks”(famous bouldering area) Possibly taken from the area above Pleasant Valley reservoir to the east? I used to fish for Brown Trout in the Owens River, the outflow of Pleasant Valley Reservoir. 40 miles north is the beautiful town of Makmoth Lakes and the amazing ski resort called Makmoth Mountain”! Oh how I miss making turns on Mammoth Mountain! Ok a coin related blurb. I love skiing Mammorh so much I bought a… Read more »

East Coast Guru

Kaiser, your comment reminded me of the movie “The Third Man” Have you seen it? Just curious of what you thought of it.

By the way, regarding the gold Liberty next year which is a copy of the dollar coin, is that supposed to be a high relief?

Jeff Legan

Hi Dazed and Coinfused, Now at least I know why you like talking politics here. I noticed long ago concerning stocks that analysts are useless. They will lower their rating after the company reports bad news, not before. Too late for any investors that hold the stock. Same the other way. Tell you to buy after it already went up substantially. It is not just kids ignorant of the past, Dazed and Coinfused. Plenty of older folk too. Sears had all the parts in place to be Amazon before Amazon even came on the scene. If Sears had started dabbling… Read more »

Hi CaliSkier,
When he is not insulting people I also like his posts. I liked every one he made on this thread.

Andy

Judging by the number of black women at coin shows, I put my money on these Harriet Tubman coins selling out around 3020. The January releases are probably already being produced, yet no images. I am counting the minutes until the Rutherford B Hayes medal is released with great anticipation.

morgan

Here’s the medal.

CaliSkier

Major D, thanks for the additional “Flowing Hair” tidbits! Whether Medal or coin, something looks really off IMO, with the images rendered so far for the silver medal version. That damn, CAD, computer enhanced/rendered modern CRAP! Just looks sterile or?

Antonio

There aren’t engravers like there used to be. Ah, the 1700s.

Antonio

Well, I certainly wasn’t. My parents were in WWII but that’s as far back as we go, as far as I know. Not even close to the 1790s.

CaliSkier

I’m impressed Kaiser Wilhelm, as those were the same ones I noticed as well. Additionally, the shoulder/trapezius has now been beefed up, ala, “High, I’m Hans und I’m Franz We Are Here to Pump You UP!” LOL

Antonio

I have made my reservation to be notified when both coin and medal are due to be released.

Antonio

Come to think of it, I do have replica Flowing Hair and Draped Bust one ounce silver coin reproductions, not from the U.S. Mint. I may take a shot at the silver medal when it’s available. I’m with you about the gold coin. When I googled it, mostly what came up were Stellas. Stella, Stella! (Sorry, couldn’t resist. I’ve always felt they’re patterns and not coins, per se)

Seth Riesling

Major D,

The 2024 Flowing hair silver medal will look exactly as the 1794 FH silver dollar (our first $1 coin after the Mint was founded in 1792) which back then did not have a denomination on it. In keeping with that historic tradition, the Mint said the FH 2024 gold coin will not have a denomination on its obverse or reverse (but they haven’t said if the $100 denomination & weight/fineness will be on the edge of the gold coin).

NumisdudeTX

Craig

I’m with you on this one Kaiser. I’d also like it done as a silver coin, as I simply do not collect medals. As I love the earlier classic designs, I may have to buy this one in Au unless they want a 100% premium over spot!

Jeff Legan

I agree with the both of you as well, Kaiser Wilhelm. I think I discussed this Craig before, in fact. I said I thought medals should only be earned, never bought.

CaliSkier

Seth, not to contradict, however these will look exact only in the image, not in execution or character. Computer assisted designs just look off IMO compared to originals. That’s one of my beefs with the New Morgan/Peace dollars. The computer assisted/rendered designs lack feeling and due to cleaning things up for the previous original artist, the appear sterile IMO. Not much of a fan.

Seth Riesling

CaliSkier,

I do agree that CAD, with laser sculpting makes a very “sterile” look on new U.S. Mint coins & medals that are replicas of past designs.
In 1794, many people called the eagle on the reverse of the FH silver dollar “scrawny,” and I agree.

Where’s the thumbs up when you need it?

CaliSkier

Agree 100% Kaiser!

CaliSkier

Sorry to be a curmudgeon, however I’d like to be perfectly clear, these medals or coins(Au) will “Not be Exact” replicas or rendering of the originals. The Mint will tweak the images using CAD or whatever flavor of software, to put their own modern twist on these classics. I can already tell, that the silver medal, at least as far as what images have been published, have been altered and look quite a bit off in numerous different areas. IMO, you might as well buy a poured, knock off coin from China, because that is what these look like to… Read more »

I 2nd that Kaiser Wilhelm, re: “For whatever reason I have never seen medals as an equal part of what I imagined when I began collecting coins”. I did go all in on the 9/11 medals, otherwise although many tout Medals as the new or future of coins, from the US Mint, I’m just not “buying” it. Especially at the overly inflated the prices the Mint is getting for a Medal vs monetized coin. Coin being the emphasis vs value, as I think we can all agree, whether monetized or not, unless you are a teen who’s pilfered one’s own… Read more »

LOL Seth and Kaiser, re: finding proof coins in the wild. Seth, I too have done similar requests, of cashier/store owner, when receiving or spying shiny new quarters in the till. I must admit a confused/perplexed look on his face when I asked for more of the shiny ones. Then the look on his face when I explained that there was a US Mont in Denver, which is where these were made. Kind of a, “so, who cares or an and??? Hi CaliSkier, I also loved arcades, though different games (Tiger Road, Predators, Outrun, Hydro Thunder, Super Dodgeball, and tons more). I was very lucky. The local arcade was a test market for the nation. I played some machines that were never rolled out nationwide. Predators was one of those. I think it was the first linked cabinets video game. 4 of them. 4 Space ships that fought each other across a playing field consisting of a solar system including a sun, that was multiple screens wide in each direction and wrapped around so you never hit a boundary and would… Read more »

You can still leave the page in the future if you get in the habit of hitting “Copy” when you have a comment you really like or you spent a lot of time on and want to do a search or leave the page for any reason, CaliSkier. I open my email program right after I finish a comment to save a “Draft” there if I really don’t want to lose something. Sounds like this one fit that parameter. There are plenty I do not “Copy” because I can replicate them from memory for various reasons. Then you have to… Read more »

Hi Kaiser Wilhelm,
Do you use a desktop or laptop computer or a phone to visit here? My descriptions applied to a desktop computer, or possibly a laptop but would be useless for a phone I think.

CaliSkier

Just for kicks, you should try it, just once Kaiser Wilhelm. Similar in exactions are given, if asking a bank for rolled coin, asking a cashier, if any additional coins are seen in the register as to what they just gave you in change or if trying to give them an American Innovation $1, Native American $1, Kennedy Half dollar and somethings, even a $2 bill. You get the deer in headlights, disbelief, similar to, what do you expect me to do with this? Then, heaven forbid you round off or up on a cash exchange, attempting to avoid cents… Read more »

Sorry CaliSkier,
When I agreed with Kaiser Wilhelm, I said “both” because I hadn’t seen yours yet. Mentally replace my “both” with “all three” if you see it.

Antonio

Well since, In God We Trust didn’t first appear until 1864 and made the norm until 1865, and E Pluribus Unum did appear with the Heraldic Eagle on the Draped Bust dollars, it could still be considered normal, circulating currency. I noticed some dollars were minted with a “1” under the wreath.

Antonio

I stand corrected, not made the norm until 1866.

Rooster

The following is from Coin World: According to the U.S. Mint’s design narrative, “To honor the original, the Mint will follow the same minimal inscriptions on the 1794 Flowing Hair dollar coin on both the silver medal and gold coin. The original edge inscribed denomination will also be included on the gold coin.

CaliSkier

Hey, what happened to the comments made by Major D? I’m pretty sure the comment count had reached 101 and is now at 95(96). I seem to recall that Major D had a few comments within this particular thread? Talk about weird or losing/missing one’s posts or comments? I do find this quite odd. Ponder… As we all know Major D is and has been a “Major” contributor to the site to say the least. Hope all is well.
