The U.S. Mint’s clad Proof Set for 2023 was its best weekly seller, rising by 5,255 to reach a total of 312,050 sets.
It was followed by the 2023-S Proof Silver Eagle, with the standalone option experiencing a climb of 2,105 during its first full week of sales, reaching a new total of 182,209 coins after adding in its six-day debut of 180,104 coins.
Actually, the real total for the San Francisco Mint’s proof Silver Eagle is now 210,369 coins thanks to another 88 units sold in the 40-coin bulk option, representing a weekly increase total of 3,520 coins. This option debuted at 616 units and has since increased to 704 units, which is equivalent to 28,160 coins overall.

Among these products, 54 outperformed their sales from the previous week, compared to 59 in the prior report. Four products experienced an increase of more than 1,000 units, the same as in the previous report.
Meanwhile, 5 products experienced a decline in weekly sales, compared to 3 in the prior report. All the reductions were below 40, except for the 2023 Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Silver Medal, which dropped by 1,528.

Proof Morgans, reverse proof Morgans, S and W mint proof Eagles Innovation Dollars, women nobody ever heard of quarters, this series of medals, that series of medals its endless. The mint’s prices have gone crazy, $130 for the silver proof set and another $24 for the Innovation Dollars proof set. What are 1973 Bahamas proof sets worth today? About the same as all the junk the US Mint is putting out today will be worth in 50 (or a lot fewer) years.
With most 1982 through 1994 proof sets hovering around $3 and 1995 through 2006 ranging from $5 to $7, I’m not going to get excited about proof sets. And that’s what dealers wholesale them for, take a couple sets in and it will be even less. I just paid $40 each for a batch of 2009 silver sets that contains $34 in silver and $5 in face value dollars. Today’s kids are collecting the invisible gold and silver coins. I think they call em digital currencies. Like the gold bitcoin or the silver etherium. And the Gen before them started diverging to buying the paper golf and not physical. And there’s the rub. Paper gold is worthless when you can’t exchange it for physical (sold 100 to 1 or some estimate like that) except when the power goes out you can burn it for heat or as toilet paper in case covid 23 or 24 pops up. Good read, Dazed. The mint sure has gone ‘woke’ in the last few years and I’m curious to see if the ‘Bud lite experiment’ affects their bottom line as well. Hi Craig, Everything goes in cycles, I am sure they will go back to “sleep ” soon enough. I do not think there are many Black collectors that can afford Gold coins. For example, from EarthWeb “HOW MANY BLACK MILLIONAIRES IN AMERICA ARE THERE IN 2023?” July 20, 2023: Among millionaires, Blacks make up 8.8%, Whites 76%. The silver proof set sells for $130 and contains 1.3 ounces of silver, at $23 that’s $32. Ignoring the non silver coins that’s a 306% markup. The quarters set sells for $80, that’s a 281% markup over the $21 silver content.
Yes, but they’re beautiful in proof and silver. I prefer them over the copper nickel clad. Maybe one day they’ll sell for more than paid for them from the Mint. Just adding to my retirement. Everything helps. I enjoy them while I have them.

Few mint sets from 1971 to 2011 sell for more than pennies over FV. The 1973 set, the only way to get the P and D Ikes, still is under $10, a poor return after 50 years on the $6 issue price. The 1981 with the 3 exclusive SBAs sells for within $2 of FV, well under the $11 issue price. I have obtained the 1987 mint set with the exclusive P and D Kennedy halves for $2, or 18 cents over FV. There are always exceptions especially over a several decade run. Like Morgan and peace. Some years not made, others made en mass. some coins alternate metals used or only way to get a coin is by sets. Even magic mike says on his show he’s cracked many many many sets just for the rare, exclusive coin. But the norm is the sets rarely have a ROI. Craigslist listing in my area shows lot of ase for $35. With silver around $22 spot. I didn’t buy many silver offerings this year, but I think they were $72 to $82 and not full ounce for some of the coins. 400% is close based on spot, 300% over the $35 is $105. So depends on the metric I guess. But raw materials are usually cheaper than refined products such as jewelry or coins. My 15 year old nephew has no idea what a silver dollar is, and may not know what silver is. When I gave him a Baseball Hall of Fame silver dollar, he scoffed and said its worth 2 dollars. With the national debt surging past $33 trillion and the 2024 deficit headed toward $2 trillion, today’s kids will learn the value of Silver and gold the hard way.
Ford retracted billion to advance their EV program. Toyota said EV aren’t feasible for quite some time. Honda and chevy have cut their goals of production from 2 million ev to 500k. With ev taking back burner, silver platinum etc will go back into a higher demand as more ICE vehicles are made til the car companies can reap larger profits. Which after Ford giving uaw such a huge boost in pay will be a while. Plus rockets and missiles and drones use lot of metals for the computer aspect.

Hi Craig, I tend to agree with you. Death throes. Will we even be using and minting physical coins to collect in 50 more years? It might all be digital currency by then. The government might eventually offer us a small premium to our digital accounts for turning in our physical coins. I won’t be here in 50 years either. I got one of each Morgan/Peace dollar offered so far from the mint. With between 275K and 400K minted, which offering is considered ‘more popular’ is a moot point for me. I want to collect all of the M/P dollars the mint produces. I don’t think they are going to do much in the secondary market (might even lose value) so I’ll be buying just one of each to have a complete collection. I too went to the New York World’s Fair with my mom, but I believe I went in ’65. Enjoyed a nice tour of New York, still remember Rockefeller Center with the impressive water fountain. The New York subway, I still have a token my mom gave me. I don’t remember when I started watching Flipper, maybe about the same time The Time Tunnel and Lost In Space. Seems to me the way to tell which is actually more popular would be to see which reached 275000 first. Not sure if the Mint shares that info. The Mint obviously believed the proof would be more popular. I still think the Mint should base mintages on subscriptions received plus a small percentage more.
