Another exciting day is planned by the United States Mint for coin collectors with today’s release of the 2023-S Proof Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars.

For the first 24 hours of sales, customers can order up to 25 coins per household, with each coin having a limited mintage of 400,000, all priced at $80 per coin.
Both are struck at the San Francisco Mint in .999 fine silver and to a proof finish — the highest quality available. They follow the sale of the uncirculated Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars from last month. Those uncirculated dollars sold out shortly after their debut, with most of their mintage accounted for through pre-orders using the Mint’s subscription program.
Like the uncirculated editions, the proof dollars showcase century-old imagery that was recreated two years ago for six distinct strikes commemorating the 100-year transition from Morgan Dollars to Peace Dollars in 1921. These newly issued coins provide collectors an opportunity to acquire a new issue featuring their beloved designs.
Morgan and Peace Dollar Designs
To present these 21st-century coins, the U.S. Mint combined century-old assets with modern-day technology to recreate the designs.
The Morgan design was originally created by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan for dollars issued from 1878 to 1904, and 1921. This includes the obverse (heads side) offering Lady Liberty in profile with a cap, flora, and a crown incused with the word "LIBERTY," while 13 stars, "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the date of issuance encircle her.
Each Morgan dollar reverse (tails side) depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings clasping arrows and an olive branch, accompanied by a wreath. Reverse inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "ONE DOLLAR."
As for the Peace dollar, it features designs by renowned Italian American Sculptor Anthony de Francisci and first seen on Peace dollars issued from 1921 to 1935. The obverse has Liberty in profile with a radiant crown on her head. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the year of issuance.
Reverse imagery depicts an eagle at rest holding an olive branch above the inscription "PEACE." Additional inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "ONE DOLLAR."

Price and Ordering
Starting at noon ET, the 2023-P Proof Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars can be ordered from the U.S. Mint’s page of silver dollar products.
Additionally, on Nov. 14, the U.S. Mint will make available the pair of dollars in a special reverse proof finish.
My subscription charges for the Morgan & Peace processed at 1 am this morning. Looking forward to the Reverse Proof in November.
Yep Allan, my Peace Dollars processed overnight and Morgan did the other day.
Mine showed up on my CC Sunday. Still pending this morning.
The Reverse Proof’s are going to be the best coin of the Series.
if the subscription numbers are accurate, there are still over 60,000 proof dollars left for each of the coins to be released today, plus another 40,000 assuming 10% not available under subscription. I wonder how long it will take to sell out, since many already have the coins purchased under subscription.
gone is the excitement/frustration of trying to log in, finally getting the screen to appear, clicking and waiting to see if you got lucky enough to get one of the dollars…
Tom, the available counts this morning are 225,028 Morgan and 69,466 Peace.
I don’t trust the number that shows up under non-subscription until after they are released. I think it has been that value for weeks. where it comes from is anybody’s guess.
Yes, you’re right about that. At 12:07, it’s still showing the same numbers: 225,028 Morgan and 69,466 Peace
Tom, have you been following the numbers since release? There’s no way that these numbers are following sales.
Of course it should sell out by next week’s sales update. So hard to track. And it’ll adjust up and down. I just wonder if all those returns for uncirculated will update. I also wonder if the ap actually pays for all the grading or just the ones that show 69 and 70. Rest get refunded. Or do they send in their 10% for grading and say give me 500 70s and 4,000 69s. And once the labels finish they get them all back. Or do they say here, here’s 5,000 coins. Only slab 69 and up or when ya… Read more »
If you were spotted you would fall victim to the Advance Swatter.
I think, Dazed and Coinfused, that the APs have all kinds of backroom sweetheart deals in place with the grading companies.
B K,
I couldn’t agree more. The pictures look spectacular.
Anxiously awaiting delivery. Hoping these are problem free.
harryg,
This was my demeanor after I saw my blemished Uncirculated Morgan. Sheeesh.
Darrin Lee Unser,
The specifications section in this article has an error in it – it says there is no Mint mark on these coins. But, they do indeed have an “S” Mint mark on them.
NumisdudeTX
Yes, but looks to be a small “S”. I wonder if there will be any filled “S” errors as a result.
that is not a mint mark. the s is the elemental abbreviation for silver. just like cc does not stand for carson city, it means cheap copper.
also 9-11 wasn’t the middle east. it was the chinese. think about it… XI is on the coin. if you turn it upside down it is IX. IX =9, XI =11. coincidence i think not. and before yall say He Xi wasn’t president yet so impossible, i present to you, exhibit b. which is, Nostradamus, whom predicted it, was not alive when it happened. unless he pulled the ultimate andy kauffman
Dazed,
I thought Ag was the elemental symbol for silver. Thanks for clearing that up! I like to learn at least one thing per day.
Craig and Dazed and Coinfused,
I’m not sure whether it’s your intent or it just happens to be the case, but it’s getting more difficult all the time to tell precisely which one of you is joking.
Kaiser,
It never hurts to laugh a bit and your response gave me a chuckle!
Craig,
Always happy to oblige, and I absolutely agree, laughing is good for all of us. My wife and I believe humor to be, only after love, the second most important ingredient in our marriage.
Should we tell him we are the same person. Or better yet, we are his father. I don’t think that’s ever been done. Totally original idea. Wouldn’t it be strange if he loved his sister, then his son would also be his nephew. That’s a pretty nice tax write off. Good for at least 1 gold coin.
You can legally marry your first cousin in most states. Fun fact…. President FDR & First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt were cousins.
NumisdudeTX
And if you illegally marry your brother husband, you can become a congressthingamajig
D & C,
Republican (R-GA) Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is the product of inbreeding! Lol.
And Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) likes to breed/mount teenage girls & and has shown some of his male colleagues the pics while in the House chamber! Nasty behavior.
NumisdudeTX
Thank God all your democrats are pure as the virgin snow. Nothing unsavoury going on with any of them…right!
Craig,
I didn’t say Democrats are all pure, they just aren’t typically as brazen & morally bankrupt as many Republicans seem to be these days…(example Gay, Drag Queen Republican, pathological liar & grifter George Santos!).
Everyone in Washington DC gets some dirt on them for playing in the mud of the DC swamp!
NumisdudeTX
I hate to spoil all the fun but what does all this political mud slinging have to do with coins? You guys need to find another forum to discuss political BS.
Roger,
Without politics we wouldn’t have coins/medals to collect as Congress has all powers over coinage as per the U.S. Constitution. Of course, silver & gold is the only currency authorized by the Constitution.
Also, since when are you against free speech? It’s a political issue…
Besides, not enough people post comments here about the tripartite numismatic hobby/industry/science.
BTW, my Proof Peace dollars arrived yesterday & are in great condition and my Morgan dollars arrived today & are also luckily in great condition with the exception of some lint inside & outside some of the capsules.
NumisdudeTX
Your right all posters are free to say what they like but political trash talking is not why I came here. I’m not the first and probably won’t be the last to abandon this site.
Roger,
I understand your position; however, it’s neither possible nor fair to attempt to hold everyone to your own standard. New contributors are always welcome here and bar the occasional misanthrope no one is kicked out. We are a varied community of individuals and there are as many lines of thought here as there are participants. If I had to name a couple of watchwords for our site it would be tolerance and acceptance. I hope you stay.
Roger,
It might help to just read and react to what you like and just skip all the rest. After all, there is a ton of coin talk going on here, but it just happens to be interspersed with and sometimes woven in and around other topics of discussion.
Nothing unsavory ranks up there with drab and boring; I’ll take sin.
If you were to have a child with a non-binary individual, would that be considered multiplication or division?
What???!!!
Did I just read?
Punctuality is impotent. Punctuation is important
.
That was funny KW.
Thanks, FViia. Entirely my pleasure.
Okay, you get the gold star for this article comment section D&C tying in the leader of China Xi with 9/11 😉
Now that’s imagination 🙂
All in a day’s work. Just happy to contribute.
Watch your back, Dazed and Coinfused. Roger is on the prowl, and so far our buddy Seth has been the one to bear the brunt. Eyes and ears open!
Can’t please everybody. And more than just mintage and content matter. Some people struggle with white guilt and want to suppress those that think differently. They demand silencing of any reference to bad things in hopes of saving their own soul. I bet he even has lots of black friends. But it has been proven that outside factors matter. If they clad some of these sets in aluminum recycled from bud light cans I bet some sales would drop. If people think usa is weaponizing money through sanctions then I suspect a move from ASE as a go to for… Read more »
That being said, he’s a good guy and it’s not like he’s on the warpath or anything. It seems that occasionally our free-wheeling ways here tend to make some folks just a mite uncomfortable or uneasy. But, we try to do our best, and what more could be asked of anyone than that.
Unless you express yourself nothing gets resolved. Civil and cooler heads would never prevail. And most conflict or point of contention is usually a slight misunderstanding, but when wounds are allowed to fester they become infected and spread. A simple request for a tetanus shot can prevent lock jaw. Simply cleaning a wound (listening) can prevent a finger or hand or arm from being amputated. Dazed and Coinfused,
Upon re-reading your comment I realized if this were meant to be taken seriously it would likely be one of the most novel conspiracy theories out there. Kudos!
I hope mine have a p mint mark. Then maybe I can get emergency release designation on it. And I’ll put it in a red oak box
D & C,
PCGS is slabbing the Mint Director autographed serially numbered COAs & Mint congratulations cards (200 issued at random) from the Unc. silver dollars for an extra $45 fee!
NumisdudeTX
Seth, the start of your comment really piqued my interest: “PCGS is slabbing the Mint Director”. Now, that would be something new! Unfortunately, there was more to the sentence than that…..
Major D and Seth,
Without question the one and only Slab To End All Slabs!
Should wr be worried if we check the slab under 5x mag? I mean everything doesn’t always stay in Vegas. Like herpes.
What’s the big deal about herpes, either acquired in Vegas or at a somewhat bawdier than usual numismatic convention? It’s the souvenir of a good time and the gift that keeps on giving.
It’s not a scab, it’s a badge of honor
Now there’s a man who grasps the true meaning of “taking a chance”!
And by the way, the former was my initial reaction also. Yikes!
Dazed and Coinfused,
I’m pretty sure I somehow managed to pick up Magic Mike Fever because every time I hear the slightest mention of a Red Oak Box I get a tingly feeling all over.
The proofs and reverse proofs won’t come in a Red Oak Box? Shame. I have a Canadian 1911 – 2011 proof set in a Red Oak Box. It’s a nice set too.
Antonio,
I have to admit I was more than a little surprised and somewhat disappointed that the Mint placed neither the Uncirculated nor the Proof Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars in any sort of special box.
That’s what I’ve been commenting on for years Kaiser – the poor presentation cardboard boxes with plastic felt insets! 🙁
That’s my pet peeve as well.
Chris,
I have to tell myself when I see those poor excuses of a coin holder aka display box not to get upset and to just go with the flow.
I could care less. I remove the coins from the display box when they arrive. Coins go in my safe…boxes in a file cabinet.
I’d say that’s a waste of safe space to store silver in it.
Roger,
Separating my coins from their OGP would be like splitting up twins.
Knowing Joe it is special. Betcha it’s made from 100% recycled good old American fdoi US Constitution. So it special.
As Trump is special, “special education” – which is why he continues to refuse to allow the release of his high school grades & college grades transcripts…
NumisdudeTX
If he is as dumb as they all claim, wouldn’t the genius move be to not prove them right. Taxes got AL Capone. Then the ghost in his cell haunted him to the day he died. And the president stole his armor car. No wonder musk parked his car in space
Trump promised numerous times during the 2016 election & all during his 4 years as president to release his IRS taxes, but never did. It took Congress to get them after they were audited. He paid less than you did for 2 years in a row ($750 each year) as a supposed billionaire. Lol.
NumisdudeTX
And yet somehow… we’re the “smart” ones. Don’t blame me. I didn’t vote the same people in congress 46 years in a row. The ones promising to fix bridges and roads for last several decades. Jessie ventura for president. Actually. I think Penn and teller would make great president and vice president. At least they can do more than just make money disappear
Maybe you should read up on tax law, as businesses are allowed to write off deductions such as losses and depreciation of capital expenses. Plus I doubt very much if Trump pays himself a salary, or if he does, it’s very little. And let’s conveniently forget that he/his vast business enterprise pays property taxes, sales taxes, FICA taxes on ??? employees, foreign taxes, etc., etc., which probably equates to millions of dollars in taxes paid.So no, Seth, I don’t think anyone with a functioning brain believes for one minute that Trump only paid $750 during those 2years! When I was… Read more »
Craig,
Congress got his official federal government IRS income tax forms & it does show he paid $750 one year & $750 in another year. If he is a billionaire & has losses that bad, he is NOT a good businessman! His companies went bankrupt 3 times many years ago too. He is a failure as a human being also. Buy the book “Everything Trump Touches Dies”…and read it carefully…
NumisdudeTX
People in America are getting dumber and dumber every day!
Craig,
Yes, because they can’t tell truth from fiction…
NumisdudeTX
Seth,
Aren’t we getting ever closer to that being the human condition?
That’s why they can’t function without smart phones or other people telling them what to do
I have a dumb flip phone and only my wife tells me what to do.
Craig,
Careful, there are always people listening and you might not be aware which “side” they’re on. I recommend donning a disguise when you go out and keeping your Hellfire jammer ON.
Non-payment of taxes put Al Capone in prison, but syphilis got him.
who cares! How about Obama’s college transcripts
They can’t find em cuz they listed under Barry Soetoro.

I tend to care about the level of education a presidential candidate has…He & Michelle Obama went to Harvard and are licensed lawyers…. nothing more needs to be said.

Robert e Lee was and is still the only graduate of west point that I know of that did not receive a single demerit. But half the country dislikes him. Oddly enough, as the losing general he was put in charge to teach there. It seems to me that nobody wanted… Read more »
D & C,
I certainly don’t just consider level of education when considering a political candidate, but it helps. I think prior political experience helps as far as learning how to work with colleagues of two major parties & public service overall. I do respect Harvard as many around the world do, but it’s not the best (Oxford & Cambridge ring a bell). And being a lawyer can’t hurt, as it requires out of the box thinking & communication skills.
See you at the debates, or at the polls…
NumisdudeTX
Well with prior experience. Obama was a community organizer and I a first term senator. What kind of defendents or plaintiffs would his Harvard expertise represent. Plus expensive doesn’t always mean better. Yes Harvard is expensive. But it is harder to get a chick fil a franchise than being a student. Look it up. And at one time it had access to rare books. But now everything is online and available for seeing. Professors are needed but not always beneficial. Some people see and learn, others read and learn, others learn on their own and some never learn. Which university… Read more »
D & C,
Of course, education is just a starting point…and we taxpayers pay for free 1st grade through 12th grade education which is required by law (with few exceptions).
Also, Thomas Jefferson did not donate his library to Congress…He needed money badly and near bankruptcy, when Congress paid him $23,950 in 1815 for his library that started the Library of Congress!

There has long been either a theory and/or a rumor to the effect that FDR let the Pearl Harbor attack happen in order to finally get us into the war. Either way, it sure as heck worked.
Richard,
Those and $3.95 will get you an average cup of coffee these days.
To be fair, Dazed and Coinfused, when you buy coins from online vendors you have to pay for the box separately, so there is that.
Kaiser,
We should be grateful they aren’t in cellophane or just loose in an envelope. Both methods have been use by the Mint in the past.
The ocean creatures appreciate that too. Probably
Dazed and Coinfused,
I’ll admit I didn’t know that whales and such are coin collectors.
Mostly they are crypto collectors. Several bitcoin whales out there.
Aren’t they the only ones not afraid of liver-hungry Shamu’s? Too darn chewy, I think.
Antonio,
I’ve seen lots of pictures of coins from the Mint in that kind of packaging and I think you would agree it’s not a pretty sight.
For the money they are asking, it should come in Halle berry’s box
Dazed and Coinfused,
Since dreams are free I’ll have a taste of that lovely fantasy.
Totally agree!
How un-Canadian Antonio! It should be in a red maple box not a red oak box 😉
And yet, red oak box it is. It’s nice. As for our Mint, they seem to follow the bird call, “Cheap! Cheap!”
Chris Terp,
Anything but red oak will have you running afoul of Magic Mike.
Would cedar preserve it better? Or store it in amber and in 65 million years we can clone it, using lead.
I don’t know, Dazed and Coinfused, considering good old Amber might have something to say about that.
So his wood jump-start your wood? I’m not sure I want to know that fact. Agent Smith. Yes sir, I’d like to make sure that this is the pill that puts me back in the matrix. And can you sign this consent form stating you guarantee I will remember none of this
So are we referring to the red pill or the blue pill or the ones that Mother gives you that don’t do anything at all whether or not you’re ten feet tall.
I’m not even sure where the wood talk came from, but in any case when you get to be my age with all of the attendant ailments that entails, wood is not the first – or second or third etc. – thing on your mind, ever.
“Emergency release” is terminology better suited for the House of the Rising Sun.
Updated. Thank you.
Actually, the specs say it does have a mint mark (S). The specs then say, “no privy” mark.
First it said none under mint mark. But the admin posted he updated it. When I looked before the coin went on sale it said no mint mark, which is how we arrived at the S mark comments etc.
Poncho,
When this article was first published, it had an error in it about the “S” Mint mark, but after I let the editor (Mike Unser) know about that error, he quickly fixed it.
NumisdudeTX
Seth, Dazed and Poncho,
Mike Unser is good about that; he always makes the corrections quickly.
I believe the Peace proof may turn out to be the more significant of the two, given the historical rarity of proofs within that series.
Don’t worry. The mint will release another 20 proof versions in the next few months to make them less rare. After all, thr mint is about making money, not making what collectors want. I bet Mike is standing beside the gloved inspector cherry picking his coins as we speak.
Will there be a variety 1 S and a variety 2 S?
An ss an rs a z28 and an iroc
I believe iroc is a nasty Scottish softdrink. Or was that IRN BRU? Leave it to people who love haggis. It’s got to be made with sheep’s gut.
Antonio,
Scotland is the only country in the world (except Communist Cuba & North Korea) where Coca-Cola is not the #1 best selling soda.
Irn Bru is number one in soda sales in Scotland.

Seth,
How can the funny fat boy with the doofus haircut live without it?
Kaiser,
Fat Bastard of DPRK somehow gets shipments of his favorite Emmentaler cheese from Switzerland where he attended college under an assumed name.
I’m tired of Switzerland being “neutral” – they need to pick a side!

Switzerland is neutral when it suits them and tilted when it doesn’t.
There are many holes in their diplomacy, so much so even their cheese can’t conceal it

As long as he’s not standing behind the inspector with a different sort of glove.
This is 2023 after all. Would you categorize these coins as a continuation of the original series or as a separate series? Considering they are in 99.99% silver vs the originals’ 90% silver. I’m thinking a different series.
Antonio,
These silver dollars will be classified as a different series. The “Red Book” has the 2021 ones listed separately from the “old” original Morgan & Peace silver dollars, after the Innovation dollars.
NumisdudeTX
Antonio and Seth, I think we’re getting into semantics here. I’d say it’s the same series, as the obverse and reverse are unchanged except for the date (and for the mint mark for the proof). However, because they’re of different compositions, there will be a recognition of that. I’d say Coin Book has it right: Morgan Dollars – Price Charts & Coin Values (usacoinbook.com) and Peace Dollars – Price Charts & Coin Values (usacoinbook.com). It’s just like with the Washington quarters, which started out with a silver composition, then changed to a clad one in 1965- it’s still one series… Read more »

I’ll follow the Red Book’s lead. No doubt the Blue Book will do the same. A different series, after the Innovation Dollars. What do the experts say?
Major D, The legislation that created these silver dollars specifically calls them “100th anniversary” coins & are not precise copies of the older series & are not issued for circulation like the old series. Also, the legislation says that they “honor” the originals with “renditions of the old designs”. The Red Book specifically states that the Mint’s artists used modern computer technology with historical art work to create the “modern designs” on these tribute coins. They are a separate series numismatically. They are not 90% silver, 10% copper & they don’t have the same actual silver troy ounce weight either.… Read more »
Are junk coins all reclassified too? Steel cents? V nickels? Kennedy half dollars. I should sue that mercury dimes don’t contain any mercury.
D & C,
The lady on the Winged Liberty Head dime is NOT Mercury from ancient mythology, she is Lady Liberty with a winged cap representing freedom/liberty of thought. The designer Adolph A. Weinman was very clear on that point during his time at the Mint.
NumisdudeTX
Makes sense because mercury had wings on his shoes. Like Goodyear.
Dazed and Coinfused,
They’re called Mercury Dimes because they come from Mercury in the same way that Mars Bars come from Mars.
Kaiser,
Yep, just like assholes come from Uranus. Lol.

Danke schoen, mein Freund!
I must disagree Seth. USA Coin Book has it right IMO as to how they present it- both old and new are included together. I get that the 2021 ones were the 100-year anniversary. What are you calling 2023 and beyond? (BTW, 2022 was in the works, until the Mint changed plans). There are other series out there that started out in circulation, then changed to NIFC (Prez dollars, Kennedy halves). And, other series that stared out with one composition, then changed into another (Lincoln cents, Jefferson nickels, Roosevelt dimes, Washington quarters, Kennedy halves). And, still other series with gaps.… Read more »
Major D, It’s silly to some, but Numismatics is a serious science, & this type of discussion is needed on new Mint products. The Mint has the original master dies of the “old” Morgan & Peace silver dollars designed & engraved by the original artists, but the Mint modified the design with computer aided design & new artists at the Mint for these new modern tribute coins (a close read of the legislation makes it clear in a number of ways that this is a different series). The legislation only required production in 2021 of these 100th anniversary tributes, it… Read more »
Major D,
Also, USA Coin Book is a retail buy, sell & auction website & not a scholarly numismatic publication.
And the San Francisco Mint never struck any Proof Morgan silver dollars or Proof Peace silver dollars till this year.
NumisdudeTX
Seth,
I had never given any thought to any of these particulars previously. Thanks to you and Major D for bringing them all up.
Major D,
This is addressed at every station of the London Underground by all of those signs that say “Mind the Gap”.
But to be fair. Back then the dollar was worth 99.99% of $1. Now it is worth 90% of a dollar. The magnetic poles shift again. Once what was old is now new again. Same fence, different coat of paint
Also, it is 90% of an ounce. So technically, the exact same coin except they deleted the 10% clad, so same silver content. Its a circle. If you know which Asian comedian that joke was told by, you know that was a funny reference. Might be Korean.
I think that’s “What was once old is now new again.” Or is it “What was new once is now old again”? Or “What once again was now is new old”? Sheesh.
Pay extra and see what the label says
With Carling you could actually pay less…
As I await and ponder the noon release, I recall many here who have said there are too many of them. At a mintage limit of 400,000 each for the Morgan and Peace proof coins, I’m interested to know what you feel would be a more appropriate mintage limit? Also, what can be deferred from the limit as to how many actual collectors there are out there? I’m assuming a certain percentage are held by dealers and speculators. Does anyone know what percentage gets slabbed? Are we talking about less than a third/ 133,000 being in the actual hands of… Read more »

I wonder then, in your opinion what’s keeping all of these coin dealers afloat? It’s got to be a challenge to keep all of the inventory air conditioned and safely and securely stored, especially given the increased risks due to ever more severe weather events. I imagine insurance costs have to be through the roof. How much inventory is lost every year due to floods and fires?
like anything else. one collector has something that other one does not. the other one cannot get it. after a while, the collector gets tired of looking at coin or dies or needs the money or the wife tells him he has gold coins, but she does not have gold necklace. dude sells, other dude, sees the coin he could not find. trades one or two of his coins to get it. now he happy. he gets tired of looking at coin, wife also a beach, whatever, and another collector gets a chance. is it really rare, or are the… Read more »
Major D, There are about 6,000 coin dealers in the USA, but most are part-time dealers & most are internet-only dealers now. Dealers stay alive from a dedicated customer base over the years (I still deal with some coin dealers I bought from in 1980), but also by wholesale to other dealers as customer want lists vary from place to place across the country for collector coins. Plus, raw precious metals bullion bars, ingots, rounds sales to stackers add to coin dealer offerings, albeit at a low profit margins. The fact that only 3 companies overseas deal directly with the… Read more »
Do you know if there is something preventing the Mint from advertising? I recall reading a post where someone said that the Mint got in trouble a while ago from calling its products an investment, and now they are strictly called collectibles. Funny, in age where States get away from advertising their lotteries on TV and everywhere else (when the odds amount to a shell-game con) if the Mint can’t buy a TV ad. Also, it seems contrary now that 401Ks are allowing American Eagle purchases. Judging by the decline of Uncirculated set mintages, which are at a 69-year low,… Read more »
Major D,
The Mint used to advertise on TV mostly in the 90s, but it’s so expensive now. They mostly advertise online by pop-up ads. The Mint doesn’t call it’s Numismatic Program coins investments due to legal liability issues. But, it does call its bullion version coins investments since they don’t sell them directly to the public.

The orange guy, not trump, in those gold commercials pulls the strings. People buying from Perth mint, or digital and paper gold. 40 of those years America was on upswing with low interest. People couldn’t pay off student loans. Now they got years of free deferment, expect free funds and forced to pay when rates have no choice but to rise. So if they can’t afford it now they won’t afford it later. The banks are squeezing. They’ll begin calling in delinquency and people will discover that if you can’t hold it, you don’t own it. Except the orange guy,… Read more »
Dazed and Coinfused,
Did you mean to say that Orange Trump pays a lot toward the interest rather than the principal? Like Yellow Freight, which got a $700,000,000 loan from the gummit to keep them in business, except they’ve gone bankrupt now anyway, and with having only paid a few hundred dollars back on their federal loan so Mr. & Mrs. Taxpayer once again get to pick up the tab. Nice.
I think 150,000 is a good mintage for not only appreciation value but also giving plenty of access to acquiring the coins. They would obviously have to put a HOL of 1-3 coins on the coins.
Craig,
I heartily agree with that. I firmly believe that the idea of a lower mintage with a lower HOL is far superior to that of a higher mintage with a higher HOL.
Print to order plus 5%
Dazed and Coinfused,
The problem with that is that the Big Guys would inflate the production runs with their greedy gargantuan orders and then return a whole bunch to the Mint and we would be stuck with high mintages again.
And that’s different from what’s already happening how?
Craig, I’m a big fan of lower mintages- but then with lower mintages come higher list prices as there are fewer of them to recoup all of the Mint’s expenses. As a comparison, the ASE proof have no mintage limits and no product limits. So, having stated limits for both on the Morgan and Peace is a big improvement I feel.
I would have to do more research but as an example the PCGS population report for 2021 P Morgan alone at MS70 numbers 12,403. At MS69, 3,331. Approximately 16,000 out of 175,000 minted for just one of the 2021 Morgans. Roughly 10% so far with no effort at all. Now add lesser grades and what others like NGC report for the 2021 P Morgan.
Thanks, harryg for the data. That’s a really good starting point. Perhaps, a guess at 30% slabbed wouldn’t be far off, including lesser grades and NGC?
Not sure but I am guessing 30% may be a little high. I was thinking perhaps 20% to 25% or so when all is said and done as these rough numbers are a little premature. I Don’t want to take on another project but your question did pique my interest and I will watch a little closer now and take a look at the numbers for the same type but different mints, Peace $, NGC, etc.
Just a follow up. Quickly checked PCGS for the 2021 CC type and they currently report about 20,000 total MS70 or MS69. Approximately 20% more slabbed and certified at those grades than the 2021 Morgan P.
People are speculating on demand. At one time the american eagles sold large numbers and they didn’t have much added value. Now they are appreciated a lot more. I am just glad the mint is making them. Everyone seems to be concerned with mintages. The true value of the coin is the joy you get from collecting it.
11:55 and you can’t even get into the web site due to high volume. only the waiting room.
It’s the gubmint. Think 1 worker attending to a line of 4,000 people. Like the dmv. They open doors at 8 am but don’t start calling numbers til 3:45 pm
and yet, shortly after 12 can get in (and that was after leaving my ‘place’ in line. I already have my 1 coin subscription and that is enough for me, I was just curious what the process looked like. Looks like plenty available.
By some miracle, there must have only been 18 ahead of you in the queue
Bubba,
As far as I’m concerned, you just said it all with this statement:
“The true value of the coin is the joy you get from collecting it.”
So true and I’m happy with my coins thus far. I need to find a way to store my Morgans and Peace dollars so I can enjoy the ones I have.
I have a spot for em. Even you wouldn’t know how to get to them. So thieves definitely wouldn’t. (I’ll put some in the Mar a largo janitor closet and a couple in Brandon’s vette, any digital ya got I’ll put on Hillary server and hunter laptop and I’ll get dick Cheney to guard it) and the rest at a secret location. Probably in kamala closet or Pelosi freezer
Dazed and Coinfused,
You can’t use the Mar-a-Lago janitor’s closet because it’s already packed with dozens of busboy illegals, countless tubs of orange tanning cream and millions of “Make America Grate Cheese Again” tee shirts.
He’d poll better in Wisconsin, that’s for sure. See. Illegals don’t speak English so no need to hide the docs. They wouldn’t know what they were looking at. Now if you suddenly short one of em an hour on their paycheck it’s like playing billiards and hitting the cueball. . The harder you hit it, the more English you get out of it.
YES!
Or when I discover a coin I got or have multiple of, I can sell some and buy a more elusive coin that is new to my collection that I would otherwise not have been able to afford before.
A true collector here. That’s how I’ve collected most of my coins. With the exception of the 1995 W Gold Eagle set with Silver Eagle as part of it. I knew at 35,000 minted, it was one to have. Turns out there were only about 32,000 minted. I was right in my assumption and am glad to be the proud owner of it, regardless that the ASE was slabbed at PR68.
Antonio,
You are indeed a very fortunate man to possess that key American Silver Eagle.
Amen.
Took one minute to get in from the waiting room at 12:01.
Yeah, I clicked on the site and they put me in the infamous ‘Waiting Room’ for about 40 seconds. I don’t believe for one minute that there was “heavy traffic” for these offerings, just that the mint wanted the illusion of demand so I’d buy as many as possible. I bought none, as I have one of each already headed my way.
though if you try to look at order history, now that generates a message something like due to heavy volume no fair peeking for 24 hours.
but apparently if you really wanted a coin you could get it easily, and pay for shipping (instead of ordering under subscription and get free shipping)
guess they need a label for slabbed coins ‘purchase under subscription’ or ‘purchased day of sale’. they put all other type of goofy labels on the things, so why not.
Tom,
What’s the odds that Magic Mike will take your suggestion and start slabbing ‘purchase under subscription’ coins. It’s been my observation that these days people are collecting ‘labels’ and not paying attention to the coin that comes with the label. I like my coins in OGP and am looking forward to seeing these proofs, as I’m sure you are.
Craig,
I’ve never had a coin graded and slabbed in my entire collecting life.
i think grading is backwards. i think the mint should at our request send our order to company of our choice. and you get the coin that is in front when your order comes up. make subscription order number random each time. and make it so that these dealers cannot send in more than 100 of each coin type in a 6 month period. which means no limit for a private collector. but you have to pay separate shipping for each coin. i bet that levels the playing field. if you order first day, automatic first day of issue. if… Read more »
Tom, if you’ve made 3 purchases this year all the rest are shipped free.
Don’t give them any ideas..lol…But yea, I thought something was wrong with my subscription so got on and ordered one, no problem….Of course then later the mint said “Your order has shipped” ..I didn’t need two!!!
remember, a club is only popular if they have a line of old women that think they are still 21 standing out front wearing clothes they confiscated from their daughters they claim are too revealing, making it look busy. i got online to see if my subscription went through, i see the charges pending. at 12:11 i tried to log in to see my mint info and i got the waiting room prompt. within 15 seconds, i was let in. also the count avail was still the 60k whatever. no change. since i am getting 2 of the RP sets,… Read more »
Same here, Dazed. I’m just getting one each and will spend a bit of money on the RP Sets. I see these proof Morgans and Peace in the same light as the proof ASE”s, they probably won’t decline in price, but I don’t see them ever being expensive to acquire. So, for me, one of each is sufficient. November can take it’s time getting here because it’s almost football season!
Craig,
I sure hope you’re into professional football because college football as such just committed hari kiri with some of the most inane conference realignments imaginable. There will now be three “super conferences” – Big10, Big12, SEC – that will each have who knows how many more teams each, an extinct PAC12, and then a bunch of nobody cares schools looking in. The fat lady has sung here for sure.
Kaiser, I love college football but unfortunately it’s being corrupted (like everything in the USA) by the lust of money. Does it make any sense to anyone for Stanford and Cal, pacific coast teams in the Pac 12, to switch to the Atlantic Coast Conference? That just doesn’t sound right, but it’s all about the money. One would think that Biden would veto that merger, as the amount of aviation fuel those teams will be consuming to compete against ACC teams is going to be staggering. I thought we were trying to save the planet! By the way, my proof… Read more »
Craig,
You’re absolutely right to say this is a disaster in the making. Several of the conferences will now include colleges from coast to coast; think of the insane amount of team travel involved!
And think if the carbon footprint.
They should pay for their education now or let other student take their slot. College football should become minor league football. Or make it the women’s league and allow LGBT and all that.
Dazed and Coinfused,
What burns me the most about this is that the very same university presidents who used to whine about how “student athletes” shouldn’t under any circumstances be paid are now wantonly destroying the entire college football scenario just to make possibly a few extra dollars, and there really isn’t any guarantee of that since the networks control the cash spigots.
Oh, the travesty in college football! (Sorry, Kaiser don’t mean to pick on you). Never mind that the Saudis who financed 9-11, and the “prince” that had Khashoggi murdered and dismembered, now control the PGA. Okay as long as Trump gets his cut.
They also kidnapped the world cup and set up Messi to win his elusive milestone. Probably to carry favor for their soccer franchise. I wonder if they are surprised Messi didn’t go. And now many others also are changing mind about playing in SA. Except Reynaldo as he is washed up after being swept away while burning bridges. After seeing Messi make fools of MLS teams, I’d almost wager he’d single handedly defeat any women’s pro soccer team, especially the national team. Perhaps even without a goalie. Kidding. That would mean 15 year old boys would tie or lose too.… Read more »

They feared going back to a king would just be more of the same. While Washington would be awesome, no guarantee who took over and it’d be the same. All the colonies whether Spanish French or English were tired of that kind of rule. That was one of the main points of contention from those representatives. They wanted oversight and some didn’t want change and felt easier to start with a king and gradually change. That is one reason it took 12 years to become a nation.
These 2 coins will be right up there as my all time favorites.
My Morgan subscription is listed as ordered.
My peace subscription is listed as “back order”.
But I can go on and buy the peace dollar right now.

No, it probably just means they need to wait for more product to ship from SF to the Irving, TX fulfillment center. It will just be a little later than the Morgan.
I think you will still get it. If you want & have the $ get one at NOW will go CU in a day or 10…. A huge #minted so they’re gonna be around awhile IMO. $80:$till pricey for 20$ of Ag. A biz not the collectors friend the Mintis now….: YodaJR.

I wouldn’t put much stock in these numbers. They are highly suspect, having been the same throughout the early part of the release, then actually going up in the case of the Peace dollar. For instance, Peace was 69,466 before the noon release, then was still at the same number 10 minutes after release at 12:10, only to climb to 78,205 at 4:40 pm and still be at that same number at 8:00 pm.

Part of the inflated price of the coins is to pay the transportation of half of them to Texas for handling by USPS the same they did with the UNC coins. Of mine the Morgan is coming from Memphis and the Peace from Texas but the shipping label for both will be Memphis.
I assume the Mint ships the coins directly to Memphis or Irving as requested by the Fulfillment contractor which runs both facilities. If the labels all say Memphis it’s because that is the companies primary distribution point for Mint products and they use the same label template at both sites.
Also if the USPS is unable to deliver a shipment they might prefer it get returned to Memphis were they would have staff to resolve the issue.
Weird the Memphis district shipped first considering coins originate in San Francisco. But I suppose due to selling constraints the Texas location ships later as in behind in time zone.my coins came from each facility, odd since Memphis is closer to Florida than Texas. Why not ship to Amazon and let them deliver. Yeah yeah, has to be usps cuz of fed entity, but I suppose it makes sense to send from San Fran to Texas to distribute back to California. They should play LL cool j .going back to cali
Both locations must have received their coins from the Mint days in advance so it is odd that Irving always starts shipping 7-8 hours after Memphis. It’s like Memphis ships on day shift but Irving does not start shipping Mint product until 2nd shift.
No I’m wrong. USPS in Memphis received my Morgan at 12:41pm. USPS in Irving received my Peace coin at 1:50 pm so they both started shipping around the same time.
It is only the email notification from the Mint that is delayed 7 hours for coins coming from Irving, TX not the actual shipment.

Jim, with past releases (ones that I was invested in) I was able to track sales in real-time even intervals using the “available-data” feature. I’d get a baseline number available just prior to the noon release and graph it based on 5-minute, then half-hour, hour and daily numbers sold based on available number declines. Sometimes, the numbers were so in real-time that I could even see where my own purchase subtracted from the available number. The graph typically would follow a reverse exponential curve, where the sales pace would diminish over time (always starting at a fast and furious pace,… Read more »

Hello
I hate to call someone a liar but Mike Mezak on a CSN 8/12/23 infomercial just said the proof Morgan & Peace dollars from the Mint sold out in the first minute of sale. I have been monitoring them and they have NEVER been sold out to date. You would think the Mint would be concerned about someone making these untrue statements on TV.
Allen,
Relax, Magic Mike says that about every coin he sells on CSN/HSN. In fact, if you actually listen to him, nearly everything emanating from his lips is a lie. Every great once in a while, he’ll slip up an tell the truth. I’ve noticed that doesn’t happen often! The Mint could care less as long as Magic Mike and his cohorts continue to buy their coins in mass. It’s all about the money.
Yep, just last night I watched Rick Tomaska selling what he referred to as the 2021 “High Relief” Peace dollars, comparing them to the 1921 “High Relief”. When the mint itself said the 2021 releases were not in “High Relief”! …and I always considered Rick to be pretty much on the up and up…A little high, but sometimes right on the money.
Jim,
NGC actually graded the 2021 Unc. Peace silver dollars as “High Relief” on their slab labels even though the Mint said way in advance of issue day that they would NOT be high relief coins as you referred to. NGC needs to issue a statement that they made an error in that regard!
NumisdudeTX
Agreed. Very misleading, and confusing to a lot of newbies that have never seen in person, a true 1921 high relief. Kind of puts the hobby in a bad light.
I just got the Morgan dollar yesterday in the mail. I liked it much better than I thought I would. I guess I never paid much attention to the design before. It’s interesting that the authorizing legislation was signed on January 5, 2021. I don’t think I recall anything else going on in Washington that week. 🙂
I got the Peace dollar today. It makes the perfect companion piece to the 1923 Peace dollar that my grandfather gave me when I was a kid.
So what you saying is, thanks president trump
… and Congress.
You might just be the only one thanking Congress for anything these days.
I’m sure Ukraine is ecstatic. And since the Clinton foundation’s salvation of Haiti is short lived, looks like Haiti will soon be getting congress to cut blank checks. But disguised as hurricane relief most likely
You know that Haiti is a lost cause when even the Dominican Republic does everything possible to keep those voodoo folks out.
Had they known what was gonna happen I bet they would have called in sick to work. Who am I kidding. They only work like 3 months a year, rest is closed session or vacation and recess. I guess campaigning is called work.
I’d like to thank ex-president trump for adopting so many Eastern European women.
Next he’ll fall in love with a Mexican girl from the West Texas town of El Paso.
But works in his hotel.
Under the table of course, and in more ways than one.
As dumb as everyone claims he is, I’m sure any attempt to adopt anyone from Africa would not go well. It’ll sell a lot of newspapers, and ad space, but still… it’d risk his presidential coin saying, “What? Too Soon? Or perhaps a slave ship named “E Pluribus Unum”
Well, since he clearly has a yen for a bit of the new and strange on the side every now and then, it’s hard to say what nationalities he’s been cavalierly cavorting with while the Slovenian Ice Queen does her whatever she does thing out of the limelight and deep into the dark.
Your honor, exhibit p
Just got mine today! They are absolutely stunning!! People that do not get these will be very disappointed! Or should be.
Congrats! They are indeed fabulous! Anyone who missed out really missed the boat.
Me neither, other than High Treason, if that matters.
Weed is legal in DC, unless you are an aide, then Brandon will fire you for pot use. So they just prefer to call it treason (high is implied as everyday is a house party)
Weed has been “legal” here among the people I hung out with ever since I arrived from Deutschland in ’65. On the other hand, I don’t think the authorities were ever, until just recently of course, of the same opinion.
… but if we get a couple of new retro coins out of that, then it’s all good.
My Morgan proof is still processing. Eager to welcome it into my home.As a kid, I remember getting Morgan’s from circulation. Every once in awhile a “CC.” Silver Dollars were, and are, special (to my era).
I remember in the early 80s seeing my uncle pull out coins in a plastic like case with Carson city on it. While I am sure the case not that old (plastics are relatively new) but even then it looked old. Or maybe it wasn’t plastic, but it did have special case with Carson city written on it and he had lots of them. Other Morgan’s were in tubes or albums or the cardboard holder with rusted staples
Jeffrey,
Even though I was born in 1947 I don’t recall ever seeing one of those in circulation. I have to assume it was because the Federal Reserve coin distribution system didn’t extend all that comprehensively to the U.S. Occupation Forces stationed in Austria and West Germany. We got everything up to the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, but above that it was all paper money. Incidentally, the coinage and bills didn’t appear until after all the Military Scrip was withdrawn.
Got my Morgan a day late today….looks Perfect. My Peace dollar got stuck in the KC,KS DISTRIBUTION CENTER for two days. Finally left there at noon so I won’t get it until Monday.
Congrats, Roger. That looks positively awesome!
Which is worth more from CACG; advanced or first release?
Langdon,
From what I’ve read here recently, it appears the Advance Release now claims the award.
Advance release just help the AP tell hoe many special suckers there are out there. Fdoi could be a consumer or coin show submitted coin. Same goes for custom labels. How fast turn around and how many times they can resale the same coin. At the end of the day a 70 is a 70 no matter what day it shipped.
I like that now we have not just “suckers” but “special suckers”. A step above.
If they were coins they’d be advance release suckers
All too often I’m still calling these crazy things “advance purchase.” Thanks for the timely reminder!
How about a label “Verified Subscription” for the coins sold in advance of the “Advanced Release”.
Coinfax. See what others paid in your area and how many previous owners
Brilliant, Dazed and Coinfused!
According to coinfax, brilliant AND uncirculated
Elected criminal approved
Electric subliminal imbued.
I like that a lot, Rooster!
As in a preview showing at the triple x cinema.
In honor of Paul Reubens passing
One time the poor guy spanks the monkey and this is his legacy?
“hoe many special suckers there are out there.”
Very good question.
Advance release of course but if the coin is a 70 that’s the bottom line.
Rooster,
Unless, of course, you’re a fan of Caffeine Mike Mezack, the Advance Purchase King.
If mint coins were stock, advance release would be inside trading. Also AP stands for authorized purchasers I think.
That is correct, but it wouldn’t have gone as well with Mikey’s name.
I am a collector and this will be a great addition to my Peace Silver dollar collection. My grandma started the collection in1922 and now it will be me to keep the collection going with this addition.
Good for you, Tony. What an excellent way to keep such a grand old tradition going.
Well, at least they lived long enough to collect all the state quarters. Throwback comedy. Gotta love it.
Funny thing about that. I have never been able to either get excited about nor understand the appeal of the the State Quarter series. Each to his own, again.
It’s the shot glass without actually ever having to travel there to get it
Like ordering souvenir bumper stickers from a travel catalog.
I have bunch of golden age comic books, I keep cutting out the xray glasses coupons and sending dollar but they never come. Guess I’ll try those sea monkeys next
Your best bet is the puppies/kittens/rabbits or whatever that the illustrations showed to be barely peaking over the top of a tea cup. As I may have pointed out previously, if you doubt the veracity of those old ads go ask Alice when she’s ten feet tall.
How can you call it state quarter set if it excludes the great state of confusion
I can only imagine you must have been shorted when you got yours.
Glad to see tradition carried on.
That is awesome to keep that spirit alive
Welcome. I am a collector as well and have both a Morgan Dollar and Peace Dollar collection. In 2021 when the mint came out with these commemoratives, I was very exited about it and they were my first purchases directly from the mint. Mostly pleased but it has had it’s moments. Happy collecting!
harryg,
You came into the Mint fold at a very interesting and definitely transitional time. It was around then that the Mint was at long last putting the previously overwhelming Bot problem to rest and also pressuring the big resellers, those who were Authorized Purchasers, to stop trying to monopolize the coin release day sales on top of what they received as their own early allotments.
I am not a fan of the Peace dollar, and won’t be ordering the two-coin set of reverse proof coins. The way I see it this set is a lose-lose situation for me. If I order the two-coin set I am buying a coin I don’t want, and if I buy the Morgan reverse proof coin singularly off the internet I will be pay a jacked-up price for it. The U.S. Mint should’ve thought this two-coin set through a bit more. They are probably selling these two coins together because they knew the reverse proof Peace dollar won’t sell on… Read more »
Plan b. Buy the 2 coin limited set and sell the one you don’t want
Plan x. Buy the 2 coin limited set and skip the one you don’t want across a pond.
Mike Henderson,
Whether or not you care for the Peace Dollar is entirely up to you, but why you would so automatically assume this dislike is held by many other coin collectors as well is a far more curious and questionable issue. I have to wonder how that came about.
I agree with Mike. Nobody likes peace, that’s why there’s always a war going on. As soon as Lilith made they argue over s3x. So they make eve, and they go to war because she thinks he’s seeing other people. Women always think you’re cheating
Everyone but the sociopathic minority who choose violence to get their way prefers peace as the state of their lives and condition of their existence. Unfortunately, some of the very worst of society’s supreme egotists and perpetual malcontents happen to occupy the top of the totem pole.
As I said. Be the last one to lose an eye
He who is without stones cast the first sin. The ayes have it.
Forgive the somewhat esoteric reference, Dazed and Coinfused, but that sounds a bit like something the inimitable, irrepressible and totally unforgettable Tony Clifton might have said.
Look up Einstein quote about peace (maybe it was war)
Einstein said “E equals emcee squirreled and sometimes y.” That’s how the world began, which rested on the following Sunday.
