According to the latest sales data from the United States Mint, collectors placed fewer orders for coins last week.
The slower week, in part, can be attributed to a lack of new product launches coupled with the Independence Day holiday. As people across the country celebrated with fireworks, barbecues, and family gatherings, their attention naturally shifted away from collectibles, further contributing to the slower pace.
Leading the U.S. Mint’s weekly sales was the 2023-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle, followed by last year’s Mint Set. A core annual product, the 2022 Mint Set has maintained a position as one of the better weekly sellers since its launch. The U.S. Mint has not yet scheduled the release date of this year’s set.

In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 328 numismatic products.
Among these products, 31 outperformed their sales from the previous week, compared to 79 in the prior report. One product experienced an increase of more than 1,000 units, comapared to 2 in the previous report.
Meanwhile, the report revealed that 5 products had negative weekly sales, compared to 3 in the prior report. The sales reductions for those products ranged from 1 to 3,223 units, with the latter attributed to the 2023 Proof Set.

2023 proof gold eagle’s are way below maximum mintage for all options. Any guesses as to why they haven’t sold more? Waiting for the gold price to go up? Waiting for the presses to be available in order to strike more? Are they done for the year? Wondering…
Why they haven’t sold more? Have you seen the premium you have to pay the mint for the privilege of getting one? I’d say cost is a big headwind to sales of these very expensive coins. I like to collect the 1/10th oz proof AGE’s, I own enough of the Buffaloes and various 4 coin sets of AGE’s to satisfy my gold desires, but am rethinking that desire based on price.Pretty soon the mint will want $400 for the 1/10 oz. gold.
The uncirculated gold Eagle is an incredible rip off at only $30 less than the proof version sold for and $545 premium over the bullion coin.
Am I wrong or isn’t the uncirculated AGE just an encapsulated version of the bullion coin?

The Uncirculated version sold by the Mint to the public has a special burnished finish that adds to their production cost. They also have a limited edition mintage. But, way overpriced too!

Craig, I agree, the premiums are way high. But the proof AGE’s aren’t even available for sale except the 1/10oz. Even with the high premiums if they pumped out the maximum authorized mintages for all the options they would still sell out. Must be a lot of people like me out there. I am a sucker for proof gold and beautiful women. Both cost a lot.

I don’t think of you as a ‘sucker.’ In America, we still have the freedom to spend our money anyway we choose. The proof gold coins are my most beautiful coins in my collection but I just choose to spend my money where I can get a much greater ROI, and that’s in the stock market. As I said, I own several 4 coin sets, including the fractional Buffalo sets, so I’m good. As for the beautiful women, I have to agree with you 100%!
maybe the expense. the mint keeps raising prices. For subscriptions you have to make adjustment a few days before the actual release date. So, for instance, the Morgan and Peace dollars that I subscribed to have already been processed, and the credit card sort of shows them (they don’t show up yet under activity, but under available credit (credit card limit – purchases) they do show. a bunch of people must have canceled their orders for the dollars have been sold out. I buy gold Eagle/Buffalo bullion coins every year but the Mint’s premium on their offerings puts them out of my price range.
The Mint processed my Morgan/Peace dollar subscription July 10th and the charge is pending on my CC also.
I look forward to the 2023 Peace Dollars. If I decide to cancel all my other orders/subscriptions, I think I’ll keep it for the Peace Dollars. I really like them. I’m still trying to assemble a complete set (1921 – 1935) of the original series with nice strikes. I think they’re a beautiful and under rated coin, along with the Standing Liberty Quarter.
My Morgan and Peace dollars both show a TBD date — (although, under the subscription tab, I see a July 10 “order.”) The date until yesterday showed July 13. And, yes…price, good lord. I cut my order to 1:coin apiece. Too much over spot.
Gold buyers seeking safe havens after dumping stocks would get bullion just over spot versus not knowing what make coins collectible and worth the huge mint markup. Still ton of rounds and bars out there despite the magic mike metal shortage. I personally reduced my morgan and peace to just 1 each. Whether or not processed I don’t know. My subscription was empty. Mint investigated. Saw my subscription 3 days later and unchecked the orders. I have skipped many coins this year. The Mint will be selling the 2023 Morgan & Peace silver dollars at the Florida United Numismatists Convention in Orlando starting tomorrow July 13. The Mint will have a table at the 3-day coin show for only the second time since COVID pandemic started. They had a table at the FUN coin show in January also. These limited edition silver dollars will also be sold tomorrow at all 3 of the Mint’s gift shops (Washington DC, Philadelphia & Denver). The 18 coin dealers in the Mint’s Authorized Bulk Purchase Program already have 10% of the total mintage.
