OK, so they were able to sell over 8,000 of the O and CC privy Morgans, and apparently the coins I purchased are still stuck in shipping since 10/23? The numbers do not add up. They had no problem charging my credit card, because I can see the charge. There were no problems with any of my other purchases this year, including the other Morgans and Peace dollar. I have not received a single email from the US Mint since the email I received telling me that the CC and O coins had shipped and they provided a USPS tracking… Read more »

Agreed they royally screwed up. I was part of that same group of 10/23 that shows shipped on mint website and pre shipment awaiting item on USPS website. I inquired about 3 times (I never asked for a refund…just the coins) after another 2 weeks they sent an email stating they were refunding coins as i should have received them and considered the package “lost”. I lucked out with that 12/14 re release as i was able to snag them again…received them this time. It brings up the old saying….whos minding the mint?

Kaiser Wilhelm

Domenic Vaiasicca,

In this instance it is the handover of the package from the Mint’s Distribution Center to the carrier where the apparent breakdown in both communications and operations occurred. This is a third party distribution company, and if it’s the new one in Dallas than it’s all the more plausible that they would be prone to all sorts of beginner’s errors.

Good for you for getting your money back and for acquiring the coins on your second attempt!

Kaiser Wilhelm

Dominic,

This makes you a Double Winner versus the Mint. What an achievement!

John — If you haven’t done so already, copy and paste the USPS tracking number into the official USPS tracking site to see what it shows. Just because the Mint says it shipped them is not the gospel truth. For instance, I had “an enrollment” 21EA (type 1 proof) where the Mint said it had shipped, but the USPS tracking number showed (and still shows!) that the label was just printed and that they (the USPS) was awaiting receipt of it to send me! After many go-arounds of complaining and having the Mint’s chat site tell me it was too… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

Mike Hunt, It seems that so many of these shipping errors occur at the distribution center to carrier junction, which for whatever reason leaves the Mint’s customer service people clueless as to what to do about them. I trust the chat service even less than the live phone one, so it’s a good thing you took matters into your own hands and personally addressed the refund issue, and successfully so. Congrats on that, Mike! Good luck with your lawsuit, and not to be discouraging but that will likely require a bit more effort than simply getting your original charges refunded.… Read more »

Kaiser — Thanks for your encouraging words. At this point, even though I did not get the 21 EA, I consider it somewhat of a win as I was able to get them to do a refund …. about 8 months after everyone at the Mint had told me “too bad so sad”. That kept me from having to have MasterCard get the refund for me. If that happened, since I would be the one initiating it, I would lose some of my leverage in Small Claims Court. As it stands it just gives me the legal opportunity to throw… Read more »

Mike, pardon my butting in here in place of Sir Kaiser, but I happen to know of over 7 reputable online dealer web sites that carry the type of coin you are looking for. In particular, the 21EA, i.e., 2021-W ASE Type 1 Proof with US Mint OGP/COA (i.e., not graded/certified), is very difficult to find at this time compared to the Type 2 Proofs (which are plentiful). In fact, only 1 web site/online dealer out of the 7 I just checked has the 21EA in stock ready to order (that’s the good news), however, the price is $189.99 (that’s… Read more »

Mike Hunt

Rich —
You are not butting in. I was hoping some would jump in. And I appreciate your experience/advice.

I know there have got to be some reputable online dealers but I am very sceptical. At the risk of offending you, if I gave you my best Connie Chung imitation could you whisper the names of a few of them into my ear?

Btw, I think Kaiser has a pretty thick/tough skin. So I can’t imagine him ever being offended. Pissed off, yes. Bent out of shape, maybe. Butt nothing else.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Mike and Rich, good buddies, It appears you both know me quite well. It does take a lot to get my goat and even then nine times out of ten I wouldn’t feel right to let on it has even happened anyway. That being said, as you might have observed that tenth time occurred recently when we had a rather rude interloper here whom I did not take kindly to, but it wasn’t until he went after SENZA personally, and not just once but twice to boot, that I finally gave him some of what in my own perhaps peculiar… Read more »

Rich —
I just did a leap of faith and ordered one off of Amazon. So no need to whisper in my ear.

On the other hand, you were exactly correct regarding my intent. I can present that difference of roughly $120 in Court and stick it in the Mint’s face with all my documentation. The Mint clearly breached its commitment. Who knows? Maybe even a Small Claims Judge would get a kick out of ruling against them!

I will keep you (and maybe even Kaiser) updated ….
— Mike

Rich

Mike–

Way to go! Sounds like you got a much better deal from Amazon than I was able to able to find by searching the “dirty dozen” online dealers I use. Good luck with your quest to put it to the Mint in Smalls Claims Court. And being that it’s Christmas Eve, I better sign off before I get in trouble, butt not before I wish you a very Merry Christmas!

Kaiser Wilhelm

Rich,

Sure hope you hung around here just long enough so as to avoid getting into any serious hot water on Christmas Eve!

Congrats on the coin buy and best of luck in court. I’m pullin’ for you!

Kaiser Wilhelm

Mike, You’re entirely welcome. And it most certainly was a win; in fact, by getting a refund after all that time had passed you in effect put yourself right up there with the Mint’s always favored “Big Dealer” customers who are seemingly allowed to return coin products without the application of any time limit whatsoever. Regardless of how your case goes in Small Claims Court it will be most interesting to watch, especially because it represents the fortunes of a David going up against a Goliath. Like many court cases of whatever kind a lot will likely depend just as… Read more »

You and Rich are both double entendre types if I ever saw one. Butt you, Kaiser, did a double double entendre on the but since a double negative is actually a positive.

Thanks to both of you! — Mike

Kaiser Wilhelm

You’re most welcome, Mike.

Funny you should bring up the double negative concept. My wife swears that when I get rolling with those she has no idea what I’m even trying to say and she therefore finds their use extremely annoying and counterproductive. It’s not like I don’t want to be understood.

When I check the tracking number the US Mint provided indicates it indicates USPS is awaiting the package from the shipper. I see I left that detail out of my original post.

Kaiser Wilhelm

As I mentioned somewhere else in this thread, the transfer of packages between the Mint’s Distribution Centers in Memphis and Dallas and the USPS/UPS ultimately seems to be the weakest link in their shipment and delivery process. It seems that nine times out of ten if there is a problem with getting the coin product to the customer it occurs at this juncture.

John — I missed that (“USPS is awaiting the package from the shipper“) when I originally read your posting. And THAT is exactly how the Mint screwed me on the 21EA I am going to have to take them to Small Claims Court over. What they kept telling me was that it was up to ME to follow up on such things … and that IF I had any issues I had to scream like a stuck pig within 30 days … or it was my tough luck (read that: no refund). But read my 21EA issue posting that I… Read more »

That is excellent advice for anyone else who happens to get stuck in similar muck and mire concerning non-delivery of product and the Mint’s typical stonewalling regarding one’s proper financial restitution.

John D,

At this point I would be inclined to jump on the refund offer while it is still viable; I wouldn’t think you would want to miss out on both the coins and your money.

John D

What is more comical is that yesterday (12/22) I received a letter from the mint dated 12/14, letting me know that my payment for these coins was cancel by my creditcard company, and they want me to either return the coins or send them a check for payment. (Yes in late Nov I told my credit card company to block payment because the item wasn’t delivered and that was easier than the USMINTs 6 week refund process) I called them today to get this addressed. The person on the phone was able to look at my account and see the… Read more »

John D, Your decision to have your credit card company block the payment for the undelivered items was a wise one indeed as it both saves you the trouble of trying to get a refund after the fact and it sure as heck serves to get the Mint’s attention like nothing else does. I know how this works because I did precisely the same thing when my coins were once long overdue. The irony though was that in that instance my coins did in fact finally arrive and sure enough not long after the Mint was asking me to either… Read more »

Ah, you forget, you’re dealing with the government. ’nuff said. 😉

Kaiser Wilhelm

Antonio, I do get your point, but the entity we all sooner or later have to deal for one reason or another is in fact much bigger than the U.S. or for that matter any national government; it is in fact the global behemoth known as BUREAUCRACY. Allow me to provide a bit of an illustration of this from real life. When I was back in Germany for the summer in the mid-sixties I had a friend there who owned an early 1950’s era Puch (Austrian) motorcycle. After he had driven it all over Europe while attending the U. of… Read more »

Byzantium was notorious for it’s bureaucracy and nothing has changed for any Gubmint thereafter unfortunately 🙁

Kaiser Wilhelm

Excellent point, Chris. It wasn’t until I read your comment regarding Byzantium just this moment that I remembered one of the most often used adjectives for especially complex, confusing and confounding bureaucracies is byzantine, a beautifully descriptive word for which you have just provided the eponymous origin.

In other words, John, don’t let the Mint do you dirty twice.

Another way to put that, John, would be…

Then again, John, since advice is free it might not be worth more than what you pay for it, so please don’t simply take my words as the final say on the matter.

Uncle Sams Nephew

Today I read in CW that the a limited-edition of 20,000 Proof 2022-P Negro Leagues baseball silver dollars be issued with a unique privy mark. I confess to having perverse entertainment from the US Mint’s never-ending sales fiascos for items with privy marks like the 2021 Morgans and Peace silver dollars. Gotta laugh before ya cry. It seems like a game that the mint plays. What’s a baseball term for bad gateway, remind me, not available, limited, enter your credit card again? Following the lead of the 1919 Black Sox Sandal, again for one more time, the Mint is up… Read more »

Uncle Sam’s Nephew,

This time the Mint has Casey at the bat, and likely much as that story goes, Mudville, which in this case is all of us, will be thoroughly disappointed again when he strikes out.

Good one Kaiser Wilhelm. Casey at the Bat is so fitting for the collecting community May I now christened “The Mudville Coin Collectors” in honor of your reference. The outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Mudville CCs that day: The score stood Riders 10 to 0, with another inning more to play, And then when the Morgans died at first, and the Peace did the same, A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game. Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright, The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light; And somewhere men are… Read more »

Glad to see that a lot of folks who missed out got a chance to pick up the Morgan and Peace dollars – i just hope they are not getting grading rejects. What I really don’t understand is the 30k reduction in the S Proof Eagles – over 4 months after the release which I believe was a quick sell out. I thought there was only a 7 day return window??? As stated above, who is minding the Mint???

Rich

Mjs1447, point well stated with regards to the reduction of 30,852 for the 2021-S Proof Silver Eagle (Type 2), and what about the 2021-W Proof Silver Eagle (Type 2) dropping 10,038. This all smells fishy, er spells fish.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Rich,

That’s just shy of the equivalent of 62 Monster Cases of the 2021-S Proof Type-2 ASEs. What on earth would/could cause such an enormous drop in the sales count?

And in addition the 2021-W Proof Type-2 ASE sales numbers were reduced by a bit short of 21 Monster Cases; another mystery for a numismatic Sherlock Holmes.

All in all, Rich, it does seem the odor of Fisherman’s Wharf is wafting all over this.

Mjs1447, I think that almost everyone who purchased Morgan and Peace Dollars from that “second wave” of sales was well aware of the possibility of getting dealer rejects, but the chances could have been just as good that they were getting pristine coins. It was all a roll of the dice at that point, which is to say Lady Luck was the one in charge. In regard to the seven day return limit, that only applies to the common people such as us. As with any other area the Mint delves into, when it comes to its preferred customers such… Read more »

FYI : For my 2nd chance “O” privy order which I had missed out on the first time, I did get an email that my order was in the shipping process but never got an email with a tracking number. The coins just showed up lightning quick days later to my pleasant surprise. Really never know what to expect transaction to transaction.

harryg,

Apparently the Mint handed that assignment over to your somewhat namesake, their own resident Harry Houdini, to magically whisk the coin from them to you posthaste.

I missed the Mint sale of O and CC coins as unavailable unfortunately. Guess I’ll wait until next year and try and pick a CC up at something close to Mint retail price.

Noticed the Negro League baseball coins are an order ahead like the Morgan’s this year and that the Purple Heart coins not going on sale 6JAN2022.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Indeed, Chris, we appear to be blessed by the Mint with a pre-order situation yet again!

Mammoth

Unfortunately by the time I was able to order the ‘O’ Morgans – which I’d been shut out of purchasing on the original sale date – they were already sold out.

I’m NOT going to pay ‘scalper prices’ and will instead follow the lesson of the Tortoise: Patience wins the race.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Mammoth & Chris,

You both have the right idea. Wait until the secondary market cools down and only when the prices have dropped considerably get yourselves the “O” and/or “CC”.

Silver and Gold
Song by Burl Ives

Silver and gold
Silver and gold
Everyone wishes
For silver and gold
How do you measure it’s worth
Just by the pleasure
It gives here on Earth?
Silver and gold
Silver and gold
Mean so much more when I see
Silver and gold decorations
On every Christmas tree

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Rich,

I neglected to touch on the particular message of the Burl Ives song that made the biggest impression on me, which is that gold and silver by themselves – as, I suppose, tucked away and hidden in vaults – have no discernable “redeeming” value.

It is only when either of these beautiful precious metals are one way or another put to some kind of tangible – and rather significantly so, also visible – use that their true worth succeeds in establishing itself.

Rich

Sir Kaiser,

A warm thank you for sharing that particular message on silver and gold. Your thoughts brought to mind the last sentence from The Paradox of our Time – Give time to Love, give time to speak, give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Good Sir Rich,

You are most sincerely welcome for your kind and thoughtful words.

I thank you for the sharing of the line from “The Paradox of our Time”. Those deeply wise words are a gift unto themselves, and very much appreciated.

After accomplishing my goal of completing a 2021 mint set consisting of 1 each of ASE Type1, ASE type 2, P,D,S,0, CC Morgans, and Peace dollar, I have some spares that I could offer to those collectors who could not secure one. I can offer them for swap of equal value or sale at my cost plus shipping for that particular coin. I am a pure collector and not looking to profit monetarily and would be happy to know that a fellow collector that needed them got one. I prefer to swap if at all possible for coins that I… Read more »

harryg,

You certainly are a numismatic scholar and a coin swapping gentleman. Not everyone would come forward with such an offer as yours for an equal value trade and/or original price sale, and I applaud you for that very welcome demonstration of generosity.

Thank you Sir Kaiser. I assure you I am sincere. I got the feeling that most everybody here were true collectors, honorable, and felt comfortable offering them as I wouldn’t want someone else to do the profiteering. I am a member of other sites where there are some that attempt to do just that. As a newer commenter here I was just not sure If I was pushing any boundaries. I do belong to a swapping site and do most of my transactions there. A few profiteers but mostly straight up value based swaps with other collectors. My credentials and… Read more »

harryg, You’re quite welcome, and I assure you that your sincerity was never in doubt. I’m sure you are correct in stating that this site is one of serious coin collectors and not a random group of fly-by-nighters, flippers or flim-flam artists. I don’t think there is anything untoward about offering to exchange coins here; in fact, this is likely one of the best places to do that. After all, swaps and person-to-person sales are two of the best ways to acquire wanted coins in a relatively affordable manner. Not everyone favors the Coin Vault, I would imagine. I had a small issue with snacks this Holiday – thank goodness I’m still sexy and as soon as I can find my keyboard I’ll check back in – not interested in the Negro coins so my money is safe until at least February.

SENZA,

How did you manage to keep that manly figure in spite of consuming all those goodies?

Very impressive indeed, but don’t take too long getting back in the swing of things here!

By the way, the guy in the photo below thinks you really should be buying those coins.
