Former U.S. Mint Director David J. Ryder to Sign NGC Labels

47

David J. Ryder, who was the 34th and 39th Director of the US Mint, has agreed to exclusively hand sign certification labels for Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC). Named one of Coin World’s Most Influential People (1960-2020), Ryder brought many exciting modern coins to the marketplace, greatly enhancing the tradition of US numismatics with his leadership.

Ryder served as US Mint Director from 1992 to 1993 and again from 2018 to 2021. During his first term, Ryder was involved in several coin programs, including the issuance of silver dollars commemorating the 200th anniversary of when construction started on the White House. Surcharges from the sale of the coins went toward preserving the history of the emblematic American institution.

Shortly after he returned to the US Mint, Ryder oversaw the popular 2019 Apollo 11 Commemorative Coin Program. The program featured the first five-ounce silver commemorative and saw the sale of more than 700,000 coins, making it one of the most successful commemorative coin programs in US Mint history.

The 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Program followed, which included two colorized coins — a first for the US Mint.

Ryder was instrumental in the new designs for the iconic Silver and Gold Eagles, which coincided with the celebration of the coins’ 35th anniversary. He was also actively involved in implementing the 1921 Silver Dollar Anniversary Act, which authorized the mintage of 2021 Morgan and Peace Dollars for their centennial anniversary.

With a focus on the future of numismatics, Ryder helped lead the initiative to pass the groundbreaking Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020. The law is a roadmap for a dramatic new direction for American coins, including quarters celebrating the accomplishments of women (starting in 2022) and sports played by American children (starting in 2027). In 2026, all circulating US coins will be completely redesigned to mark the country’s 250th anniversary, including up to five new quarters. The goal of these programs is to honor a number of contributions to the American story, while bringing continued excitement to an ever-popular hobby.

"It has been a great honor to be involved with the development and debuts of so many important modern coins," said Ryder. "I am proud that I now have the opportunity to collaborate with NGC to preserve and commemorate our country’s rich numismatic history."

"NGC Signature Labels highlight esteemed individuals who have contributed to the advancement of numismatics," said Mark Salzberg, NGC Chairman and Senior Grading Finalizer. "We are thrilled that this remarkable group now includes David Ryder, who has helped chart a bold new course for US coinage."

Coins certified with the NGC David J. Ryder Signature Labels will be available through select retailers. To learn more about the NGC Authentic Hand-Signed Labels program and its many significant signers, click here.

Really cool coins, really bad customer service, questionable coin qualities, major price increases…hummmmm?

Uncle Sams Nephew

Ok, you make a good point, but the gold medal would have to be personally handed to him because if he ordered it online, he would probably hit a bad gateway again and again and again after repeatedly entering his credit card info.

But seriously, a long respectable track record always leaves room for improvement. May the next US Mint Director build on its successes while it eliminates the years-long problematic issues that left such a bad taste when purchasing our American coins that we love so much.

How about give him a zinc medal that will corrode fast! -like his scruples…Lol

Mammoth

Seems having this Bozo’s signature on the case would lower the coin’s value.

For REAL value, I have a Herman cartoon book that was signed by the author, as well as a signed Ansel Adams book & print.

Antonio

I wonder how much one with Ronald Reagan’s autograph would be worth. That would be a rarified one. Talk about ghost writer. lol.

Rich

Antonio, while it’s true you can’t get an authentic Ronald Reagan (40th President of the United States) hand-signed certification label for PCGS or NGC, PCGS does offer authentic signature labels from his son, Michael Reagan (the Reagan Legacy Series).

Remember the SNL skit with the late, great Chris Farley when he is a life coach & tells the kids “I live in a van down by the river!…” – simply priceless.

The signatures on the two labels shown are identical. That’s not possible if they were actually hand signed. So much for the claim of authentic hand-signed labels.

c_q

authentically hand-signed and genuinely photocopied

Larry T

Did you see that the Mint is going to offer a Proof S minted Morgan and Peace Dollar next Fall? I’ll be looking forward to those coins, but the rest of their line-up reeks too much of ‘wokeness.’

Antonio

Heard it first from you. I’m on board but not holding my breath for a PF70.

Antonio

And I just added my email to Remind Me. Proof S Morgan and Peace dollars in fall 2022. That’ll be interesting.

Larry T

Kaiser,

You should be working at the Mint! I’d be all aboard on that suggestion for the Enhanced Reverse Proof Morgan and Peace Dollars.

Rob S

I was sure about the Enhanced part of that, but I also had an idea of a 2023 Rev Proof Morgan / Peace, maybe from the W-mint? Seems like a likely progression anyway.

Antonio

My Reverse Proof 2021 ASEs are on their way. I don’t know about a Morgan and Peace, W mint, version. It seems almost sacrilegious. Or maybe good marketing.

TheKings714

I’m am still waiting on my Privy Morgans to arrive. Anyone else?

Starting to feel like they will not show up even though a “Label” has been created and is awaiting the USPS to pick it up.

Antonio

If the 2022-S Morgan looks like this, it won’t be too bad.

Antonio

My fingers are crossed that the 2022-S Morgan silver dollar will look as nice as this 1878 one.

SENZA

The 1878’s and specially the 1878- 8 Tail Feathers had the pronounced cartwheel and extra thickness never again duplicated and it would be a feat in and of itself if anyone at the US Mint took to such detailed knowledge and reproduced this masterpiece.

Agree, Larry T, the new 2022 Mint Product Schedule is a little lame and weak. The Purple Heart commems look interesting as well as the Proof S minted Morgan and Peace Dollars. On that note, I’m glad to see they are not continuing the (2021) Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars program per se (as it was rumored earlier this year when it was reported that “United States Mint officials are giving serious consideration to make the 2021 Morgan and 2021 Peace silver dollars the first coins of an ongoing annual series.”).

Larry T

Rich, I’m also glad the Mint isn’t minting the Morgans and Peace Dollars as an ongoing series, At least we only have to endure two episodes of frantic typing and possible computer crashes (or web roadblocks.) Of course, the Mint being the Mint, it wouldn’t surprise me if they didn’t offer these two coins on the same day. At least we have a year before we have to worry about that! It does seem the Mint is more interested in minting commemoratives than actual coins. I’m not a commemorative collector so that eliminates a large number of items for me… Read more »

Oh, and don’t forget about the $5 discount off the prices for commems during the first 30 days they are for sale. Whoopee!

Brick house or just as wide as one?

Senza,

Wasn’t the reference to a brick house once complimentary to a woman’s sexual allure. In the case of whoopee, I’m going to vote for the ‘wide as one’ option.

Rich

Right on, Larry, ‘Cause Ow, she’s a brick house
Yeah, she’s the one, the only one, built like an amazon

Rich

Sir Kaiser, I bet you also liked the Ohio Players.

SENZA

Those dates will change and other items will be worked in – I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the 2022 American Innovation releases was moved up or even released this year – I got a flyer from the US Mint today (even though they keep forgetting to give me free shipping for signing up) and in it they have available Christmas ornaments going back many years and of no surprise of course since the $29 for a nickel equation works for very few.. and even though I personally had a hand in bringing forth the Morgans, Peace and Space… Read more »

The SENZA Babe Coin is Sierra Hotel. Maybe a name change to Guns N’ Puppies will win over the Mint.

morgan

Help me understand how the individual 2021 American Silver Eagles Type II can be sold out on the 2021 product schedule tab, but I can buy all of them by signing up for the ASE on-going enrollments plans.

Larry T

morgan,

You can sign up for the 2022 and future ASEs, that doesn’t include any 2021 W or S minted ASEs. They are no longer available.

Larry T

Kaiser,

To be honest, I’m a little relieved by what ‘currently’ is being listed on their website for 2022. After 2021, I need a brief pause in spending on coinage from the Mint. I’ll still get the Proof and Unc. ASE’s, but the volume of those will be decreased. My CC will greatly appreciate that!

Rob S

I’ll echo those sentiments. I wonder if they’ll mint “enough” of them next year or impose agony upon us?
My BP and my bank acct both chimed in with a “c’mon jack” 8/ , as in “give us a break”.
I’d like to see what some of the new designs will be, the colorized purple heart silver $ sounds interesting to me. Unsure about much of the rest. Wonder if the negro league coins will have any curved features?

I will second-that I too have 2021 wallet exhaustion – look at the bright side though we could all give coins for Christmas presents and then 2021 would have been a complete waste of time and we would be back to square-one.

Ryder, yeah is he still in the league? Seriously, I wouldn’t pay for his X nor want it, nor need it. He is best suited for signing chocolate coins intended for diabetix
The Director made $ but took us collectors to the woodshed and schtupped alot of us without the decency for a feel around (A V75 gift………)

Antonio

How uncanny! Looks like the Gold Liberty!

Seth Riesling

In the Oxford English Dictionary next to the word “zero” is a picture of disgraced, & under Treasury Department investigation, David J. Ryder’s autograph – worthless!

NumisdudeTX

Rich

DJ Ryder is a “zero” = not a hero. My favorite PCGS autographed label is the “American Heroes Series” – General Tommy Franks signature. He may not be a Texan, but Hobart Oklahoma is close enough if you’re Livin’ on Tulsa time.

SENZA

It’s not so ridiculous it’s more a testament to what our Society has become; at least the fake – wanna-be RuFF-Ryder-Rock-Star part of society and I think those are Virtual signings as they are just too important to be within arms length of anyone who would buy their products and hype.

If anyone wants the 2021 Reverse Proof ASE Designer Set signed by David Ryder, they have them available on the Coin Vault right now! They are PR70 and only $799.98! The Abel brothers had only complimentary sentiments for Mr. Ryder, as they’ve had numerous opportunities to meet with him.

SENZA

Hey Larry, long time no-see as navigating this blog for me is sometimes like being in the cube. I wonder what is going on there – is it an exclusive club for people who can afford to pay 400% mark ups on items that are already 400% marked up to begin with? I can’t watch those guys for more than a minute and I just want to vomit.
