Three gift sets for 2018 made their first appearance in a U.S. Mint sales report. Designed for newborns, birthdays and other special occasions like graduations, the three sets launched last Thursday, Jan. 11.
The 2018 Congratulations Set, which has been on back order for several days now, was the best early performer of the three with sales of 9,015. That’s handily the second quickest start in the series to date. Issued annually since 2013, past sets logged opening sales of
- 74,497 in 2017,
- 1,568 in 2016,
- 733 in 2015,
- 692 in 2014, and
- 1,414 in 2013.
The set from 2017 was unique in that it held a limited mintage American Silver Eagle from San Francisco instead of the traditional mint-to-demand edition from West Point.
As for the other two products, the 2018 Birth Set debuted with sales of 2,426 compared to 2,766 for last year’s set and the 2018 Happy Birthday Coin Set posted sales of 2,423 against 2,419 for the one from 2017.

All three gift sets were among the U.S. Mint’s top weekly sellers. Here’s a listing of the agency’s most popular products for the week ended Jan. 14:

- 2017 Quarters Circulating Coin Set (+308 to 18,914)
The U.S. Mint published sales data for 251 numismatic products. Forty-three outperformed their prior weekly gains against 19 previously. Not counting the three new gift sets so as to compare apples-to-apples, 5 products increased by more than 1,000 units compared to 3 previously.
In addition, 66 products saw their sales totals reduced against 32 previously. Most of them registered typical declines that are usually associated with returns, and most of the products that fell were those that had been taken off sale near or at the end of 2017.
There were three products with higher than usual losses:
- 2017 Unc. Boys Town Silver Dollar (-57 to 12,256)
- 2016 Unc. Betty Ford First Spouse Gold Coin (-166 to 1,836)
- 2016 Unc. Pat Nixon First Spouse Gold Coin (-165 to 1,845)
