This year’s proof Silver Eagle is strongly outperforming earlier editions, registering sales in its first 10 days that took last year’s coin 5 months to reach.
The proof opened with three-day sales of 322,317 for the best start since 2011. Another 40,786 sold during its first full week of availability.
Looking back a few years, that compares to first week gains of 21,592 coins; 20,540 coins and 1,973 coins for strikes in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
2016-W Proof Silver Eagle orders now total 363,103 coins. The collectible was the U.S Mint’s top weekly seller, followed by the 2016-W Standing Liberty gold quarter. It jumped to 75,338, boosted by the Sept. 21 removal of ordering limits.

The U.S. Mint published sales data for 248 numismatic products. One hundred and six of them outperformed their prior weekly sales compared to 64 previously. Six products increased by more than 1,000 units compared to 4 previously.
Drop in #’s for 2016 American Liberty Silver Medals
In addition, 7 products had their sales total reduced compared to 5 previously.
One of the 2016 American Liberty Silver Medals saw a fourth straight week of modest declines. The ‘S’ medal fell by 1 to 12,192. The ‘W’ medal remained at 12,199. The pair effectively sold out within minutes of their release on Aug. 23.
