The Royal Canadian Mint continues its popular series featuring historic Canadian banknote designs with the 2014 $5 Lion on the Mountain Silver Coin.
This latest release, composed of 99.99% fine silver, has its mintage restricted to 8,500. The previous two coins from the banknote series had the same mintage and sold out.
Shown on the coin’s reverse is a lion design first seen on an early banknote from Canada’s Northern Crown Bank.
"The third of four-coins in the Royal Canadian Mint’s popular banknote series is an exceptional marriage of art history, engraving, and design, featuring one of history’s most ancient symbols," describes the Royal Canadian Mint on its website. "Stunning engraving brings to life every detail of the striking lion portrait depicted in the original vignette."
Introduced in 2013, the Canadian banknote series has featured the following coins:
- 2013 $5 Canadian Bank of Commerce Silver Coin – released July 2013
- 2014 $5 Saint George Slaying Dragon Silver Coin – released December 2013
- 2014 $5 Lion on the Mountain Silver Coin
The design and release date of the fourth and final issue is yet to be announced.
Lion on the Mountain Silver Coin Designs and Specifications
A recreation of an early twentieth century vignette created by the British American Banknote Company is depicted on the reverse of this newest silver coin. For inscriptions, at the top is 5 DOLLARS within an intricate scrollwork device and at the bottom are CANADA and 2014.
Susanna Blunt’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse. To the left of the portrait is ELIZABETH II with D G REGINA inscribed to the right.
