US Mint Sales: Helen Taft Coins Debut; Demand Widens

Debut sales of Helen Taft First Spouse Gold Coins were reported by the US Mint this week

It looks like collectors are buying coins for Christmas as United States Mint sales picked up sharply last week.

Some of the products with stronger sales included all 5-Star Generals commemorative coins, all Girl Scouts silver dollars, all proof American Gold Eagles, and all the major proof sets, silver sets and uncirculated sets.

New on the sales charts this week are the proof and uncirculated Helen Taft First Spouse Gold Coins. These 24-karat gold coins opened stronger than the two issued earlier this year, but then they also had two extra days of sales in their first reporting period. Also, the two earlier releases debuted $25 higher.

As for the their numbers, collectors grabbed 1,467 of the proof and 982 of the uncirculated for a total of 2,449. Helen Taft gold coins were popular enough to make it on the top 20 list of U.S. Mint weekly sellers.

This week’s U.S. Mint sales report included updates to 226 numismatic products. 145 of them scored stronger weekly sales compared to the 66 noted previously. 16 of them had unit sales of more than 1,000 compared to 11 from the last report.

Sold Out Products

  • On Dec. 11, the 2013 Perry’s Victory Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin added 2,900 to sellout at 30,000.
  • Also on Dec. 11, the 2013 Great Basin Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin added 1,400 to sellout at 30,000.
  • On Dec. 9, the 2013 Proof Gold Buffalo sold out at 18,555, a new mintage low.
  • Last week on Dec. 3, the 2013-P Fort McHenry Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin sold out. This week’s U.S. Mint sales report shows it went up another 174 to 19,808.
  • Also on Dec. 3, the 2013-W $50 Uncirculated Gold Eagle sold out. This week’s U.S. Mint sales report has it down 3 to 7,326.
