Week-over week sales improved for 82 numismatic products offered by the United States Mint, the third highest tally this year and the best since late August.
While buying activity was spotty for gold and silver coins, U.S. Mint sales were boosted by sets. If a product had "set" anywhere in its name, its weekly sales increase was likely higher than reported in the previous round.
Debut sales for Chester Arthur Presidential $1 Coin & Alice Paul Medal Sets
As for debuting products and also in the category of sets, there was one last week. Arthur $1 and Paul Medal Sets were released on October 18, 2012 at a price of $9.95 each. Opening sales reached 1,025.
That is down from the starting total of 1,521 for the previous Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set featuring James and Lucretia Garfield. The Garfield set launched back in December. Overall, medal sets since 2011 have struggled to reach individual sales of 6,500.
The newest Arthur $1 and Alice Paul Set did make it on the weekly best-selling list.

Numismatic Platinum, Gold and Silver Sales
There were a few brighter spots for numismatic gold coins. Sales improved for three of the five 2012 American Gold Eagle products. Weekly unit totals were up 517 compared to the previous 493. Also, products with the 2012 $5 Proof Gold Star-Spangled Banner commemorative coin advanced 59 versus 40. The other improver was the 2011 Proof Lucretia Garfield First Spouse Gold Coin, up 19 against the prior 16. Gold coins may see better support in next week’s sales report as the U.S. Mint cut prices on Wednesday.
Gainers in silver coins were 2012-dated proof and uncirculated Silver Eagles. Proof sales advanced 15,766 compared to 8,835 and uncirculated sales were up 2,839 versus 1,589. The Proof Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar was also up 295 against 243.
2012-W Proof Platinum Eagle sales actually went down 3 to 6,545. Its price was also trimmed Wednesday.
US Mint Sales: Bullion Gold and Silver Coins
On the bullion front, sales have been a bit weaker for gold coins but stronger for silver coins. In bullion news, the U.S. Mint on Monday began selling Denali National Park Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coins. Their sales are shown below. (Check out this coin news article for more on that topic.)

I’m looking at first spouse coins and I see that from 2011 Lucy Hayes and Lucretia Garfield are still available. Do you ever get any kind of notification when these coins will be no longer available? I don’t remember ever seeing anything published from the mint saying that a coin has been withdrawn, just that suddenly it is no longer available.

Jim, the U.S. Mint has given us pre-notice before of some “last chance” products, but they have never provided ending sales dates for the First Spouse Gold Coins. In the earlier years it was known, as they had always stopped selling the oldest coin when a new one was released.
Yeah, that was pre-Peterson. They came out regularly every 3 months or so but it was 10 months between Lucretia and Alice. Now the question is will they stay with the no more than 4 for sale at a time or follow the previous schedule and cut short Alice’s sales period? Who knows, but thanks anyway.
