U.S. bullion coin demand in June followed the market direction of the precious metals they contain. Gold coin sales picked up while silver coin sales retreated, according to sales data released by the U.S. Mint.
And while sales were high for U.S. gold and silver coins through the first half of 2012, they were sharply lower when compared against the first six months of 2011.
American Silver Eagle bullion coins reached 2,858,000 in June, down 0.6% from May when sales logged in at 2,875,000. For the year-to-date, the 99.9% fine silver coins stand at 17,392,000. The half-year mark is the third best dating back to the series start in 1986. However, it is:
- down 22.0% from the first half of 2011 when sales reached 22,303,500, and
- off 4.3% from the first six months of 2010 when sales hit 18,168,500
