2010 American Eagle Gold Bullion CoinPrecious metals had a disastrous week, yet U.S. Mint authorized buyers ordered more bullion American Eagle coins during the third week of May than in each of the prior weeks when metals were rallying.

New York gold prices finished lower for the fourth consecutive session on Friday, with June futures tumbling to $1,176.10 an ounce, plummeting 4.2 percent this week.

U.S. Mint one-ounce American Gold Eagles, however, soared. The coins advanced 67,000 this week, as compared to a 31,000 increase during the second week of May and a 41,500 gain during the first week. May sales on Friday reached 139,500, bringing the Gold Eagles to 471,000 for the year.

5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Act Passes House

Coin Legislation on Capital BuildingThe U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday, May 20, passed the 5 Star Generals Commemorative Coin Act.

Should the act become law, the United States Mint would strike 50-cent clad, $1 silver and $5 gold commemorative coins featuring America's Five-Star Generals who taught or studied at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC).

The coins would get minted for the year 2013, and include portraits of Generals George Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower, Henry "Hap" Arnold, and Omar Bradley -- each led U.S. forces to victory in World War II and were alumni of the CGSC.

US Mint 2010 Quarters Silver Proof Set Launches May 27

The United States Mint on Thursday afternoon officially announced that the 2010 US Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set will launch on May 27 at noon Eastern Time (ET) for a price of $32.95.

The set is the second of the year to feature the first five America the Beautiful Quarters™. The first was the clad 2010 proof version issued on May 13, 2010, for a price of $14.95. The debuting sales figures for these were released by the Mint on Wednesday.

Graded PCGS Specimen-66, it is the finest known 1794 dollar and believed by several prominent experts to be the first silver dollar ever struck by the United States Mint.

It was sold by Steven L. Contursi, President of Rare Coin Wholesalers of Irvine, California, to the nonprofit Cardinal Collection Educational Foundation (CCEF) in Sunnyvale, California.
