Heritage’s Nov. 13-14 U.S. Coins Sale Brims with Rare and High-End Gold

Condition Census 1908-S Double Eagle Takes Flight at Heritage's U.S. Coins Auction, with 1907 Wire Rim Indian Eagle, 1795 BD-1 Eagle, and 1861-S Paquet Reverse Twenty Among Nov. 13–14 Highlights

72

One of the highest-graded examples from the lowest mintage Saint-Gaudens With Motto issue will be thrust into the spotlight when it crosses the auction block in Heritage’s Nov. 13-14 U.S. Coins Signature® Auction — an event that includes an exceptional selection of rare and high-end gold.

1908-S Double Eagle, MS67

The 1908-S Double Eagle, MS67 PCGS. CAC from The Alymaya Collection, Part III that is in play in this auction is an extraordinary numismatic prize: PCGS has awarded higher grades to just two others.

"This is a spectacular coin, and one that immediately will be a strong addition to any collection," says Todd Imhof, Executive Vice President at Heritage Auctions. "Any coin from such a small mintage is exceedingly scarce, and to find one in this condition represents an extremely rare opportunity."

The first two parts of the Alymaya Collection were featured in Heritage’s Oct. 2-5 GACC U.S. Coins Signature® Auction and the Aug. 26-31 ANA U.S. Coins Signature® Auction.

Most 1908-S double eagles are known in circulated grades, which is unusual among Saint-Gaudens issues, in part because of the long-standing "hard money" tradition of the Old West, where gold was the preferred medium of exchange — a trend that remained true even once the gold and silver parity was reestablished in 1878 after decades of imbalance.

Another standout in the auction is a 1907 Wire Rim Indian Eagle With Irregular Edge Stars, MS64 PCGS — a sought-after key rarity with only four examples certified. Traditionally, all Wire Rim Indian eagles have been listed in the leading pattern reference as Judd-1901, but recent research by Roger W. Burdette has established that most should more properly be considered circulation-strike coins, not experimental issues. Nonetheless, a handful of true patterns are known and can be identified by the Irregular Edge Stars collar used to strike them. This is the first of these remarkable experimental pieces Heritage has handled.

A 1795 BD-1 Eagle, MS61 NGC is a beautiful example of the popular "13 Leaves" variety that is one of the most highly sought type coins in the U.S. gold series. As the largest gold coin in the realm, the early ten dollar gold pieces were intended to compete with the circulating Spanish eight escudo pieces, although in 1795, the half eagle was preferred in both domestic and international trade. Of those from all of the "13 Leaves" varieties graded by NGC, this is one of just eight graded MS61, and there are only nine carrying higher grades.

An 1879 Flowing Hair Stella, PR66 Cameo NGC is a magnificent, fresh-to-market example of this extremely popular coin — one of just 20 to earn a 66 Cameo grade, with only 10 receiving higher grades. Stellas came about as a result of Philadelphia patent lawyer and inventor Dr. William Wheeler Hubbell’s efforts to create an international trade coinage based on the metric system and struck in his patented goloid alloy. Patterns were struck in various metals, using two different obverse designs bearing two different dates — of which gold pieces dated 1879 with the Flowing Hair design were the coins struck and distributed to Congressmen.

Listed in 100 Greatest U.S. Coins, an 1861-S Paquet Reverse Twenty, AU55 PCGS is an exceptional example of the rarest of all San Francisco double eagles, with only about 200 pieces extant. With a reverse that was modified in 1861 by Mint Assistant Engraver Anthony C. Paquet, it slipped quietly into commercial channels, many to settle large accounts in foreign trade. The small mintage circulated for years but some were lost to attrition. In 1937, when collecting large denomination gold coins had attained a measure of popularity, an S-Mint Paquet twenty was discovered under an old barn in Hull, Texas, with some other gold coins. More examples eventually turned up, primarily examples repatriated from European holdings in recent years, but the issue remains elusive in all grades. Until recently, no Mint State examples were known, but a single MS61 example and an MS62 specimen now show on the PCGS Population Report, and the NGC Census lists a single MS61 coin.

A "Two-Tailed" Washington Quarter Mule, MS64 — an undated Washington quarter mule that was struck with two reverse dies — is a magnificent example of the mule many collectors consider to be the Holy Grail among U.S. coin errors. This example is one of only a few dozen known across all types, series and denominations. The rarest mules are those "double sided" coins — like this one — that were struck with two obverse or two reverse dies. The coin offered in this auction is a new discovery of this magnificent mule, acquired years ago by the consignor as part of an estate sale purchase.

An 1861-D Half Eagle AU55 PCGS. Winter 47-GG is considered, along with the equally famous 1861-D gold dollar, the great prize among all Dahlonega gold issues. By act of Congress, the Dahlonega Mint was allowed to coin silver denominations, but there was no ready supply of silver bullion and the coining presses were not large enough to strike quarters, half dollars or silver dollars. That left only gold dollars, quarter eagles and half eagles as the sole output from the Georgia facility. Just 1,597 were struck during the first few months of the year when the Mint was under Federal control, followed by an unknown but small number of five dollar gold pieces struck under Confederate authority.

A 1895 Morgan Dollar PR65 Cameo NGC. VAM-2 is from an original proof mintage of just 880 pieces, a total that falls far short of collector demand. Mint records indicated a circulation strike of 12,000, coins that Roger Burdette concluded never were paid out. Instead, the entire issue was melted under terms of the 1918 Pittman Act, when about 350 million silver dollars were converted into bullion.

The second-finest 1865 Liberty Half Eagle, PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC is one of just 25 struck that year, as the Civil War dragged to a close. PCGS has 12 certification events for the 1865 proof Liberty half eagle in its Population Report, while NGC has recorded 14 submissions in its Census — totals that include an unknown number of resubmissions and crossovers. PCGS CoinFacts suggests 15-20 examples of this issue are extant, while John Dannreuther suggests in his series reference, United States Proof Coins, Volume IV: Gold, a surviving population of just 12-14 examples in all grades. It is the only example graded in 64 Cameo, with one finer.

From The Texas Republic Ranch Collection comes an 1800 Capped Bust Right Half Eagle, MS64 PCGS. CAC. According to the 2026 Guide Book, the Philadelphia Mint struck a substantial mintage of 37,628 Capped Bust Right half eagles in 1800, but die evidence indicates some likely were dated 1799. The offered coin is a representative of the BD-4 variety, and Dannreuther estimates that 5,000-7,500 were produced with the BD-4 dies. The surviving population is estimated at 125-175 examples in all grades. Just 10 are graded 64, with just one 64+ and only one graded finer.

The 1895 Morgan proof looks like it has better strike details than the current 2025 proof. I see it in the hair especially.

REB, I see that you’re drooling and John Q, snap out of it, I see you’re day dreaming! Will either of you be anteing up, in this high stakes round of U.S. Mint “Hold em’? Stella… olly, olly, oxen free! Dahlonega, I hear you calling! Anyone need proof of Morgan making a cameo at this “World Series” of who’s, who? Awesome coins and although beyond most of our wildest dreams, it can’t hurt to dream of what it would be like to own, any single one of these coins IMO?

REB

FINALLY, I possess a coin in one of these Heritage rarity auctions. Except my coin is actually a higher grade. My 1861-D Half Eagle is AU-58. Take that, Heritage!

I’m still hunting the 1861-D Dollar. Now THAT is a “Rare and High-End Gold” coin. It was reputedly completely minted under Confederate control.

P.S. – That Stella does look enticing. I’m sure Stanley Kowalski would agree.

I would be inclined to surmise your version of it is worth a pretty penny, or more likely, loads of them!

In a word, “yes”.

Antonio

I don’t know. The Washington reverse die mule looks attainable for someone who can afford one of the latest limited issue gold coins. A nice addition to any collection.

CaliSkier

Antonio, a NGC MS63 sold in a private treaty, at the ANA show in 2001, brokered by Fred Weinberg, acquired by Tommy Bolack of New Mexico for $80,000. Tommy is the proud owner of the vast majority of the Washington quarter obverse and Sacagawea dollar reverse mules. To date, unless mistaken, there appear to be 5 known examples. These consist of a PCGS MS62(2017), 2 NGC MS63’s(2000/2001), this example, which is a NGC MS64 and a NGC MS66. There is a good chance this clad error quarter will go for $35K-$40K+ is my guess. Although, I wouldn’t be surprised to… Read more »

The only reason I wrote this mule was affordable is because when I went to the Heritage website, it was listed as $8,000. Since then, the bids have risen significantly. No doubt it may go for the value you note. A nice addition for someone who has deep pockets. Thank you for your insight.

Antonio

Personal,
That’s why errors are so desirable. Their unintentional rarity. The only errors I’ve ever encountered are a few clipped Canadian coins and a copper zinc cent without copper plating.

VinnieC

I heard the average car price is about $50,000. I guess the Quarter Mule might end up still being affordable/attainable. It is just a matter of priorities. However, I look around on the road and almost everybody drives a better car than me. If I get a cheaper car I might be almost half way there. If I forgo the car I would me at @CaliSkier’s guess. @Antonio I don’t think I’ve ever found a true error in the wild. Unless my 2021-D Morgan is really a strike through error and not contact damage. I did find a magic shop… Read more »

This appears to be a superior design to the one chosen for 2027’s Liberty.

Antonio

So far the designs are just candidates. A final selection hasn’t been made yet.

REB

Good to know. Thanks.

I suppose we’ll see the final decision sometime next year. I still plan to curtail my Mint purchases in 2027. I think I’ll concentrate on previous years, like coins minted in the 1920s.

E 1,

I answer questions from some posters that I should never answer.

I am aware of that and I am complicit in that.

On January 24, 2024, I posted on Mint News Blog the following:

I’m watching MNB self destruct.
The amount of Lies being posted are Insane.
There Used to be a time on MNB when if someone did Not know something they just did Not post.
Now they just make stuff up and post anyhow…”

The exact same things are happening again on CoinNews.

cagcrisp. Welcome to the New World! I’m pretty sure you’re intelligent enough to realise you can’t trust anything you read on the internet. There are just too many folks with their personal agendas to deal with. Hell, the same can be said for most news organisations on TV these days. I just filter through it and enjoy those that are making an effort to embellish the many facets of coin collecting on this site. Cheers

E1, Thanks for the info, but I already surmised that some time ago. We still have freedom of speech in the US, so he’s free to voice his opinion as he pleases. On the upcoming sales report for 11/2(published 11/3-11/4), we should see the combined ABPP(25RCAB) and Subscription(NN) 2025 Limited Edition Silver Proof(25RC) sets be reported as 25RC. This will be another interesting one to see how many are available for drop day on 11/6? BTW, on 10/19, “ats” for 25RC was at 24,778, down from the 24,978 on 10/12 and 25,008 on 10/11. The U.S. 2025 Silver Proof Set, a disaster made. : (
May go down as the lowest mintage silver proof set. A good set to find, even more scarce.

Craig

My CC just got dinged for $255 for the LESPS…I’m hoping these don’t turn out like the Silver Proof set did with quality control issues. Is there even such a department in the mint…quality control?

Tony@GA

I am buying the LES set for the first time in over 10 years – I’ll never know the quality as I never open my
Mint packages.

Anxious to see the value in couple of years for it AND the silver proof set.

Tony@GA

I do recall! I didn’t get it however – bought many of Type 1 & 2’s both AND Morgan’s and Peace dollars AND the dual ASE Reverse proof set – so much to buy I passed on the LES that year

That cert number is a little suspicious.

Tony, this reply was originally sent to Personal. A large number of threads were broken last night when the ADMIN deleted all of his posts.

Craig

Good Grief Tony…you never open any of your mint boxes! I have some still unopened, in the slight chance that I (or someone else) would want to have them graded and to get a specific label they must come from an unopened box. I’ll probably keep the 2025 LESPS unopened…if I see reports of other folks sets arriving in great condition. The last LESPS set I bought was the 2021 set and it’s still unopened. Good luck and let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Craig

I’m hoping for the best, but since people had such disastrous experiences buying those San Francisco silver proof sets, I’m concerned about condition. Usually I would never even worry about receiving a coin with a bad finish from SF, but now anything is possible. Who knows, maybe they are planning on shutting down the SF mint and the employees just don’t care anymore. That is down from yesterday’s 20,182. It’s looking like the subscriptions may have sold 18,423? We should see on this weeks sales report somewhere in the neighborhood of 20,924 LESPS reportedly sold? For those wondering about the math, there are 331 subscriptions(no longer available), plus 2,501(ABPP, now at 0), plus 3,523, subtracted from one potential realistic number recorded on 10/19 of 24,778.
