The United States Mint is releasing its limited-edition 25th Anniversary 2025-W Proof Sacagawea Gold Coin today, July 31, at noon ET. The collectible, struck in one‑half ounce of 24‑karat gold, celebrates a quarter-century since the Sacagawea dollar was introduced. The proof finish, the Mint’s highest quality coinage, features frosted design elements against mirror-like fields.

25th Anniversary 2025-W Proof Sacagawea Gold Coin – Obverse and Reverse. To complement the design, the coin is encapsulated and presented in a stylish clamshell housed in a classic black case featuring the United States Mint seal on the lid. The case fits into an outer sleeve with a gold foil image of Sacagawea and comes with a certificate of authenticity featuring matching imagery.

Struck at the U.S. Mint’s West Point facility, the coin revives the original 2000–2008 design. The obverse, created by sculptor Glenna Goodacre, depicts Sacagawea in three‑quarter profile carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste, with the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date "2025." The reverse, designed by former Mint medallic artist Thomas D. Rogers, features a soaring eagle encircled by 17 stars, which represent each state in the Union at the time of the 1804 Lewis and Clark Expedition, along with the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "ONE DOLLAR."

Retaining Original Look Without Weight and Fineness Markings

The anniversary piece omits weight and fineness inscriptions to match the original dollar’s appearance. It is struck in .9999 fine gold, weighs 0.500 troy ounces, and has a diameter 26.49 mm — the same as the original circulating issue.

Background on the Sacagawea Dollar

Often called the "golden dollar" for its distinctive color, the Sacagawea $1 debuted in 2000 during a push for a widely used small-size dollar. It had a pure copper core with outer layers of manganese brass. Circulation ended in 2002, after which the coin was issued only for collectors through 2008.

In 2009, the Mint launched the Native American $1 Coin Program, which retained the original Sacagawea obverse while introducing annually rotating reverse designs honoring Native contributions to U.S. history.
