CCAC logoThe Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) will hold a public meeting via videoconference on Tuesday, July 22, to review and discuss designs for commemorative coins honoring the 2026 FIFA World Cup and a congressional gold medal recognizing Everett Alvarez Jr., and to consider a report from the committee’s Numismatic Themes Working Group.

The CCAC is a federal panel established in 2003 to advise the Secretary of the Treasury on themes and designs for all U.S. coins and medals.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Commemorative Coins

Authorized by the FIFA World Cup 2026 Commemorative Coin Act (Public Law No: 118-143), the U.S. Mint will issue commemorative coins in 2026 to celebrate the FIFA Men’s World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The program will include three coin types, each with a maximum mintage: up to 100,000 gold $5 coins, 500,000 silver $1 coins, and 750,000 clad half dollars. All will feature designs emblematic of soccer and the World Cup, and will be offered in both proof and uncirculated finishes.

Each coin will carry a surcharge added to its sale price. Net proceeds will benefit FWC2026 US, Inc., supporting soccer programs across the U.S., with an emphasis on youth development, inner-city outreach, and underserved communities.

Everett Alvarez, Jr. Congressional Gold Medal

In recognition of his extraordinary service and sacrifice, Congress passed the Everett Alvarez Jr. Congressional Gold Medal Act, and on December 23, 2024, President Biden signed it into law (Public Law 118‑161). The legislation authorizes the Secretary of the Treasury to strike a gold medal bearing Alvarez’s image and name, with bronze duplicates available for sale to the public.

Commander Everett Alvarez Jr. is a retired U.S. Navy officer and former prisoner of war who became the first American pilot shot down and captured during the Vietnam War. Captured on August 5, 1964, he endured more than eight years in captivity — the second-longest in U.S. history — while demonstrating extraordinary resilience and leadership. After his release in 1973, Alvarez resumed his Navy service, earned numerous military honors — including the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, and the Distinguished Flying Cross — and later held senior roles in the federal government.
