Stack’s Bowers Galleries will auction exclusive Paul McCartney coins for the Royal Mint on March 19, 2025. The sale features a one-of-a-kind 5-kilogram gold coin and four 5-kilogram silver coins, each paying tribute to the legendary musician. This event marks a unique intersection of numismatics and music history, offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire coins celebrating McCartney’s enduring legacy.
Part of the Royal Mint’s "Music Legends" series, which included various coin sizes and base metal editions sold directly to the public, the upcoming auction features the collection’s most exclusive pieces.
"This is an exciting opportunity for collectors and fans of Paul McCartney to own a unique item celebrating one of the most influential music artists and songwriters of all time," said Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint.
The Royal Mint collaborated closely with McCartney to create the coins. The collection was initially released in 2024, and many versions sold out quickly, further heightening interest in the upcoming sale.

Among them, the 5-kilogram gold piece stands as the largest proof gold coin ever produced in the Mint’s Music Legends series, which launched in 2020 to honor iconic British performers. Crafted over more than 250 hours, including three days of polishing, it carries an extra layer of distinction – Paul McCartney personally signed it during his 2024 Got Back tour in Paris, France. The winning bidder will also receive a short video message from McCartney congratulating them on their acquisition.

Only four of the 5-kilogram silver pieces exist in the format, with a fifth example gifted to McCartney. Like its gold counterpart, the silver versions rank as the largest proof silver coins in the Music Legends series and mark the first time McCartney has been celebrated on a British coin.
Each of the coins is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Paul McCartney himself. Additionally, McCartney and the Royal Mint will donate a portion of the auction’s proceeds to charity, giving buyers the opportunity to own a historic keepsake while supporting a worthy cause.
Known for its prominence in rare coin auctions, Stack’s Bowers Galleries expects competitive bidding for these collectibles, given the global demand for music-related numismatics.
This collaboration between Stack’s Bowers Galleries and the Royal Mint follows a series of successful joint ventures in recent years, including the August 2023 sale of Royal Succession coins, which brought in $5.1 million, and the October 2024 auction of First Strike coinage, which realized $1.8 million.

Rick asks: “So E1, that quote was posted 8-9 days ago, yet the attacks from him only increased since then. Why?”
Everything was fine until you all attacked Kaiser to such an extreme, slandered him and me, went political and told him to leave the site- which he did. Now you want to pretend that you didn’t do anything? Payback’s a *itch, eh?

And now you have corrupted this thread with your nonsense. You’re batting 900, not bad. Pretty disrespectful to those that are tired of your bizarre behavior. Who are you today? That is not accurate Major d. No attacks on my part. Any reply that I posted was a retort, and very much a retort in kind back at him. I challenged his humor, apologized for it, and his acceptance was to compare me to Senza. Bizarre. He wouldn’t stop his insulting behavior thereafter, and I retorted further. He inserted politics, and then pulled the Orange Furor Nazi Card, all unprovoked Vitriol towards myself and Trump, he let it loose–Just like what you are doing now. Bizarre. Why? Rick,
You did nothing wrong in responding to Kaiser. Kaiser, for some unknown reason, has a case of severe TDS. I have no idea as to why but he goes overboard sometimes. We should all just stick to facts concerning coins or the mint and leave all the other crap out of the conversation. Although, it is amusing to see a row brewing from time to time . Cheers
Thanks Craig,
It’s amusing, but I feel like shit about the whole thing. Like I’ve said, I wasn’t enjoying it, but things had to be said then, and now. Right, or wrong. I think there’s someone else with worse TDS than Kaiser.
MDS(Musk_,_)just exacerbates it. He’ll be back whenever he chooses, it’s a free Country. You know Craig, REB and I have opposing political views, yet we’re good coin friends, so there’s that. He gets the credit for that because of his strong intellect and restraint. Me, not so much.
Rick, Don’t beat yourself up over a little row, Kaiser is a big boy and he’ll be back in due time. As I’ve said before, no one is going to change my political views and I’m not going to (regrettably) change others, so why bother? What do you think the price of the 4 coin Au set is going to be with Au inching close to $3000/ounce? I’m certainly happy I’ve got many previous years Au sets in my safe, but no one can be more blissful then REB with every Proof coin in his collection! I have a feeling… Read more »
It’s not so much about beating oneself up, it’s the witnessing of a full on display of immature, self destructive, and imbecilic behavior from he and one other poster here.
At $3k spot, we’re looking at $7,275.00 for the 2025 Proof set lol. I remember when those set’s were selling for 3-4k, too bad I didn’t grab a few of them. Congrats on being a smart PM buyer! Aftermarket ⇊ is the way to go for those?
Rick,
I used to buy those 4 coin proof sets for $999 – $1200.00! It’s a shame I wasn’t wise enough to see a price point of $7k plus in 2025 as I’d have bought additional sets. LOL. That price in your meme is basically what I paid the mint in 2021. I didn’t buy it to resell. I wanted the 1st set of the new design.I agree with you that paying what the mint wants is a fools game, if you’re planning on selling quickly for a profit. Fortunately, I don’t have to sell any. Cheers
How times have changed Craig. You’ve done well with your early purchases ✓
Your buddy says the price needs to be higher.
Yes, you should feel like a shit over the whole thing you started and escalated. Repeating your words to Kaiser back to you,
“Take a good look into the mirror, who do you see?…”
Yes Craig, amusing isn’t it?
Like your response to AK Bob, who said after a long diatribe: “I hope you all are enjoying the new DEI hire at the top of the Mint. Oh, I know I’m going to miff some here for just mentioning DEI but sorry, it’s the frickin truth!! PERIOD!!!”
And your reply: “I for one am in agreement with your sentiments and would welcome having RocketMan (Elon Musk with Vivek) looking into the affairs of the mint.”

Since my name has been invoked, I feel compelled to respond. You should know as well as anyone here that I appreciated Kaiser’s input. It was unfortunate to lose him and I would like to see him return. I personally thought the performative rage regarding the Booth cent was a tempest in a teapot and more than a little silly. Yes, I am. You bet it’s tough to do. Sometimes the better man is the one who walks away. Be that man, Major D.
To Rick and AK Bob and others of the same stripe, who continue to salivate and fawn over the FHG having “grown legs” and how much the 230 privy is selling for at auction: why don’t you give credit where credit is due? To Ventris Gibson, who made the whole Flowing Hair thing happen (including privy, signed coa, slabbing, and auctioning to the tune of $8.2 million). Nope, you can’t do that. So that is why you are PRO DEI.
Execrable One, care to explain how the two are related in your warped mind? There’s nothing displeasing to me about beautiful women– but objectifying them in the manner that you do is something no father or grandfather would ever condone to their daughter or granddaughter. And those that do promote it are sleeze balls. As for DEI, you clearly are against it so you must be in support of the opposite, IEB: Inequity, Exclusion and Bigotry.

Even though it has nothing to do with Sir Paul and his coinage, I received the Marine Corps 250th Anniversary Commemorative three-coin set today. The coins always look better live than in drawings or pictures (sorry, Rick). I like the design on the $5 gold the best. HOWEVER, the size of the coin is detrimental to the detail of the color guard. The soldiers are too small to discern anything in their faces or uniforms. The design cries out for a larger field/canvas to work with. Mr Cag, I’ve been doing some reading about the possibility of President Trump doing a Gold Reevaluation (GRA) as currently, the U.S. has $11 Billion in Gold priced at 42.22 per ounce. If the GRA happens and gold is reevaluated it would be worth $750 Billion at today’s current spot price. This would give us, the U.S. well over $700 Billion plus extra money. This is something that many people have talked about over the years and has been something they have wanted to happen. What is your take on this? AKBob and cagcrisp,
Appreciate the discussion on the U.S. Gold Revaluation Account (GRA) and the implications for the price of gold. Reference, How the U.S. Treasury Can Cash In Big Using Its Gold Revaluation Account, Jan Nieuwenhuijs, February 15, 2025: with regards to if it happens, “Using its gold revaluation account would emphasize gold’s strength versus the dollar… This turn of events would be bullish for gold and weaken the dollar.”
Rich, You are welcome, for my part. I’m not savvy whatsoever when it comes to stocks, bonds, GLD & SLV, etc., so the only person I know of that does is Mr Cag. I’ve read his posts for years and he has always been “spot” on in my book. I trust that he knows and he’s not a BS’er, he’s a straight shooter. Rich, If it does happen, then I would be curious about the effect it would have on inflation and the stock market. I understand there are a number of complexities to consider here. Knowing these answers would certainly provide some much needed forward looking guidance to help with my just in case what-if scenario. Instantly adding $700B of value to the gold market will influence the markets in some way. Also, will it make the price of Gold go up or down? Gold and GLD are up 42% in the last 12 months. Rich,
From a micro and macro economic standpoint, it is very complicated. Here we can see how Gold is intertwined with just about everything economic. If they do it, there will be some disruption. A couple threads ago AkBob relayed to Cag regarding GLD: “Again, please pardon my ignorance and it’s kind of embarrassing to even ask this on a public forum, hopefully there’s a few others on here that are like myself, ignorant!” “The man who asks a question is a fool for a minute, the man who does not ask is a fool for life.”(Confucius) I too had wondered(my ignorance acknowledged; LOL) similarly. Being concerned about an agitated response by others, I’ve neglected previously asking. I sincerely appreciate your asking and Cag’s thorough and clarifying response. Thank you gentlemen!
I got one of them and it is still unopened in the package!
I have one set in 70, one set in OGP (opened) and one set still sealed/unopened. I’m hanging onto these sets. They “might” end up with Legs but so far, no Legs or upside to speak of. There was initial interest in this set but once the honeymoon was over, it’s been forgotten! I think it will reawaken eventually! There’s only I believe 5000 sets.

On topic! Based on a 5kg silver coin weighing 5,000gm or 160.75t oz, the current melt value on one of these Paul McCartney 5kg silver coins is roughly $5,170. The current bids are $6,000, $5,000 and 2 are at $5,500. An American Silver Eagle Proof goes for 3 times spot price currently. That would put these McCartney Ag coins at $15,500-$16,500 retail, more or less. Of course since they are one of only 4 available for sale to the public and also being auctioned, the sky(Paul McCartney and Wings, hmmm ponder) is the limit. I can’t get over the price of the gold 5kg would be even if it came in at melt (which it won’t).
Wow Vinnie, I hadn’t even contemplated the Au version of the McCartney coin. Th melt/spot price for this 5Kg behemoth @ $2,900/oz, equates to $466,175! This definitely will not sell for spot price as you noted. I could see that coin selling for as little(sounds weird to say little) as $562,625-$600K,’which works out to $3,500-$3,732.50/oz. However there’s a good chance final hammer will be north of $750K. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see $1.2 million either. That would be 2.574($2,900) times melt or $7,465/oz

By the way, the design of the silver coin was on the front of Paul’s piano during his performance at the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary show.
After a bit more research, a couple interesting side “notes” regarding the 5kg McCartney Gold Coin. The coin could very well be sold for a significant sum, to say the least. Likely it will sell for over $1 million dollars! Apparently, Paul stopped signing autographs in October of 2021. He also has quit taking selfies with fans as well. The coin(Au) itself, and its COA are both signed by Paul McCartney. His signature, I’m guessing, is a bit more valuable, than David Ryder and Ventris Gibson’s combined? LOL Also, for any interested that may be in the neighborhood or able… Read more »
Additional back story on the colorful design of the Paul McCarney colorized 5kg Silver Coin/Magic Piano. The sketches for the Magic Piano design were found in 1999 by a builder doing a remodel in the UK and brought them to auction 20 years later in 2020. Article from Paul On the Run site with link below. “Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour piano sketches found in skip” https://paulontheruntour.blogspot.com/2020/03/beatles-magical-mystery-tour-piano.html? PS The Wikipedia entry for Magical Mystery Tour is interesting for any, not already familiar with this bit of Rock/Beatles history. I was born in 1969 a couple years after this all(Sgt Peppers) went… Read more »
My older brother gifted me this album the year it was released. The Beatles were definitely leaning more into psychedelia at the time. It’s not bad but it’s not up to the standard of some of their earlier stuff. Thanks for the trip down Penny … that is, Memory Lane and the background of the piano and the coin (the left-handed bass is noteworthy as well). I am the Walrus, goo goo g’joob! P.S. – I’m considering a trip to Hotlanta for that show to track down the elusive 1861-D Half Eagle. I’ve probably done enough damage in Charlotte already.… Read more »
You both would enjoy the ANA National Money Show, it’s one of the larger shows. Even as a spectator it’s the Bomb. Bring your comfortable walking shoes. It’s not in CO Springs this year and I’m bumming about it.
Go for the Rare Gold REB!
Ventris will be there to sign something for you. I have heard that she is a very nice person. I can almost Guarantee you that the Mint Booth will be selling the 2025 Annual Proof set(before its official release on 3/4). The Mint does this promotional marketing at shows all of the time.
Hmm … tempting.
I bought a page of 32 $2 uncut bills from the mint today. Apparently, the mint is now offering paper currency as well as coinage for sale. I wonder if it has anything to do with sagging sales numbers for the coins? Oh well, the $2 bills will look good in glass up on my wall…not a bad look for just $102.00.
They used to sell them at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP). I guess they decided to consolidate with the US Mints product fulfillment contractor. I used to order at moneyfactory.gov or bep.gov now it sends you over to usmint.gov.
For Craig, VinnieC and any others that may have missed the news or would like a refresher. This announcement was published August 31, 2018 on the US Mints website under an official press release: “Bureau of Engraving and Printing and United States Mint Merge E-Commerce Solutions for Better Customer Experience” See link below. BTW the news first broke(same as the above press release) a few days earlier on the Bureau of Engraving and Printing website, dated August 27, 2018.

Question – Could a buyer personally cut these sheets and spend/give change with the bills? How precise would the cuts need to be?
I don’t see why not, it’s Legal Tender. Just make some decent cuts to the FRN’s, like with one of those craft shearing tools.
You can get as many as you like from the bank at face value via an order, from what I remember? However, many may not be in Mint condition.
As expensive as these bills are as compared to face value, I think these Mint offerings are better suited as being a collector item, or a conversation piece of art, like what Craig is doing.
“As expensive as these bills are as compared to face value, I think these Mint offerings are better suited as being a collector item”
Oops, I misread Craig’s original post. I thought it was 50 uncut bills for $102 instead of 32. I exclaimed, “Hey, that’s not a bad deal at all”
My bad.
REB.
You have to remember it’s the mint and they always want their cut when buying from them. I buy a few pages, frame them in glass, and give them as birthday gifts to family. It does make for a unique look and all for a bit over $100 bucks.
I love it. I guess I know what I’m getting from Craig for Christmas this year! Seriously, I do love it. Do you use a single-side frame or a double? A double-sided frame hung like a mobile would give the viewer a nice glimpse of both sides of the note. I think the old designs are much more stately and clean than today’s big-head monopoly money. And the $2 is unique as well (perhaps not as much as the $500, $1,000, $5,000, $10,000, and $100,000 bills). Can you imagine a sheet of $500 bills or higher? I wonder if the… Read more »
From the Royal Mint. Could we see this again in 2025 from the US Mint?https://www.royalmint.com/britannia/britannia-and-liberty/bullion-range/?utm_campaign=8541284-2025-02-prm-britannia-liberty&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz–PlTdZZX_jHaSY-yXlNW2FZ6KCl4wMKvoa6Sw57aZbSGwK10EM1dwsM5-VvnJhiIVW-wk59H0kHip7VFQUYbiKEGUZuA&_hsmi=347790155&utm_content=347790155&utm_source=hs_email
Thanks for the heads-up, Rooster.
Welcome REB. Got this in my email this morning.
Despite some post-window shenanigans, I thought the 2024 L&B was one of the most responsibly handled releases in modern mint history. Honestly, I believe ALL collector coin releases should be minted to demand. No less. No more.
Agree REB. That was the only time they did that if I recall correctly.
Rooster,
I’m pretty sure the 2013 Rev Proof Buffalo was mint to demand for I think 30 days. Seems like there are one or two more but my memory can’t recall which ones “if” memory serves me right. This would be a Cali question to answer as he knows how the get info really well. Cali, Help, lol!
I looked at that Reverse Proof Buffalo the other day. To me, that is a finish that just doesn’t work on this coin. The Indian head looks like a blob with little definition. It resembles a numismatic Rorschach test. I’m glad the Mint moved away from this one-year experiment. The Buffalo looks much better in standard proof.
Oh man now I have to take a closer look at the RP Buffalo.
Let me know what you think.
And the reverse. Since this was a one-off, it’s still worth keeping?…
It’s ranked #74 for all 5 versions of the ‘controversial’ Top 100 Greatest Modern Coin books by whitman…
Rick and REB Thanks for posting these pics. I see what you have described REB. There does seem to be a loss of detail. I still like it. It looks like the sun is setting behind the buffalo.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not going out with the trash anytime soon. I like that it’s different but, in my opinion, the standard proof is a far better finish for this coin.
I may have to start comparing other reverse and regular coins. I can’t recall the exact coin(s), but it seems the Buffalo might not have been the only detail-deficient reverse proof. Was it the palladium? Was it the Morgan & Peace reverse proofs? I’ll have to check.
It’s not too bad, as most Gold looks pretty good anyway!
(I had the pic handy on my desktop)…
I think Au coins look great Rick (and expensive these days). I love the RP Buffalos, especially since they only cost me $1640.00! Cheers
Yes, same price for me. Those were the days!
AKBob, I recall others as well, however they also have escaped my memory. After some research, I did stumble upon the 2012 San Francisco American Silver Eagle 2-Coin Set that went on sale June 7, 2012 and sales ended July 5, 2012. There also was 2013 West Point American Silver Eagle Eagle 2-coin set went on sale May 9, 2013 and sales ended June 6, 2013. In 2012 both coins in the set had a S mint mark. Included, were a proof and reverse proof ASE coin. In 2013 both coins in the ASE set had a W mint mark,… Read more »
Cali this good info as I do not recall this. Thanks for the detailed info.
I do recall those as well. Just last year, after being stored in a box in the basement for ten-plus years, I woke them up to see the light of day and sent them in to the TPG(4 of 6 sets).
Two sets were not qualified for 70’s, and the other 4 sets(sent in) were qualified–Almost….
AKBob Good memory. I just remember ordering as soon as they went for sale.
“I just remember ordering as soon as they went for sale.”
Same here.
GLD just Closed at Another All Time Closing High.
GLD closed at $270.70 (24×5 trading may cause price variation).
Keep up the good work Cag.
Back at the MNB, we had Major Trolls come and go.
We have one here now, but not for long. As usual, you let them self-destruct, to drown in their own human waste, so good work to ignore the childish BS….
Treasury Secretary Bessent just said, on live tv a few minutes ago in regards to the 1C…
Quote: “It’s going soon”……
Thanks Rick…
Yes, the cent will be discontinued. The responsibility now lies with Treasury Secretary Bessent to cease its minting. An important aspect often overlooked in this context is that managing the public debt is one of his duties. Eliminating the cent is within his purview…
Coins & paper money, US & World Mint offerings, Auctions, the state of the current PM markets, and Numismatics in general has been discussed, at least in part, from every single commenter on this thread.
With the unfortunate exception of one single commenter.
Rick, If he isn’t kicked off this Site I’m going to kick myself off of it. I’m tired of the crazies out there and now we have one on here. Admin needs to stop this nonsense. He’s just beating a Dead Horse at this point! I’m done with his shenanigans at this point and if the Admin can’t or won’t do it then I’m not going to continue supporting this forum. Admin should have stepped in a very long time ago! It’s discouraging and sad Admin continues to let this happen. He has hijacked this forum/blog. I do not need… Read more »
AKBob,
I’m 100% with you on this. In time it will pass.
Peace Out
AKBob, E1,
He’s trying to kick you off. He’s trying to censor you, to shut you up. Typical.
He hates you. He hates me. He hates a lot of people right now.
I’ve never hated anyone ever, so I don’t know exactly how that feels, and that’s the truth. What I can tell you is that I think he must be going through something really awful inside. So have a little compassion for him, as he’s unbalanced at the moment. Maybe it’ll pass, maybe not. He is no longer interested in coin talk at all. So let him go.
Rick, If he isn’t stopping by now what makes you sure he’ll ever stop! He obviously is having a mental meltdown! Nothing he’s said has made any cents but he sure thinks he does AND hilariously, he actually truly “thinks” he’s Winning!! I have tried to tell you before and you wanted to ignore him. Look where that’s got you now! It’s a total waste of time for me now to even read posts on here. It’s been 100% hijacked and the Admin doesn’t even care. Maybe they’re more interested in Demand Destruction of this forum/blog. I have no respect… Read more »
