The United States Mint will kick off a new four-year quarter program in 2027, celebrating youth sports across the nation. Authorized under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act (Public Law 116-330), this initiative will feature up to five different sports annually, showcasing activities played by American youth. The program is set to run through 2030.

In addition to the quarters, the U.S. Mint will release a redesigned half-dollar each year of the program, highlighting a single Paralympic sport.

The list of potential sports to be featured was developed in collaboration with the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition (PCSFN) and the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP). To gather public input, the Mint is inviting Americans to review the proposed list and share their preferences through a brief online survey.

The survey opened on January 22, 2025, and runs through February 20, 2025. To participate, visit the Mint’s official website at usmint.gov/coins/coin-programs/youth-sports/.

Please, just stop. Five designs annually for four years? My eyes are rolling out of my head.

Yeah, but you’ll get a free Cardboard Collector Coin Board to go with them!
You’ll be sorry….

Major D

Well, the coins don’t cost any more than face value, being in circulation– so, a free collector board is a good thing to inspire new collectors I’d say. How great that gold coin purchases are subsidizing it! Oh, and the free boards come in huge cardboard boxes with lots of bubble wrap, unlike the cheap plastic envelope mailers the Mint reserves for sending American Eagles in.

REB, I’m not a fan of the youth sports themed quarters either. I feel sports have been covered plenty on the commemoratives (Olympics, World Cups, HOFs, etc.) –but granted, these were not circulation coins, so perhaps it will be new for the general public. And if it attracts any new collectors to the hobby, then I’d say it was worthwhile. Regardless, I’ll be there to pluck several new shiny quarters of each design from bank rolls for my collector bags. It’s amazing how quickly circulation coins can turn to scratchy dirty messes. It’s much better when you can get them… Read more »

Major D: My problem is not with the theme, it’s just that there have been too many designs on the reverse of the quarter for the last 2 1/2 decades. With the state quarters, it was a new and exciting idea. At this point, very few actually look at a quarter anymore. The concept is old and stale. There are simply too many quarters with different reverses out there. I think it’s time to at least cut the number of designs. Maybe one per year? Or how about one design per mint? Or perhaps one design per denomination (penny, nickel,… Read more »

i think they wanted to do dogs of each state or something like that but because 2026 would fall in the middle of that 10-year run, they shifted to women quarters (nearly done) and then came up with youth sports after that to fill in the gap before the 10 years are up. but seriously, the mint is only doing it because congress passed a law requiring the mint to do it. by default, the mint can’t change designs for 25 years, but congress can (and did) override that. if you really don’t like it, let your representative know, otherwise… Read more »

That assumes my representative cares or even represents me. None has done anything I’ve suggested. Generally, they do completely the opposite.

Oh well, It’s not like I’m looking to punch these things into a Whitman holder. I typically only pay attention to the designs when I examine the silver proof set.

…Redesigned half dollar…
Replacing Kennedy with Paralympic sport?
HUGE MISTAKE!!

Major D

I believe Kennedy will still be there on the obverse– rotating designs will be on the reverse just as with the quarters which retained Washington on the obverse.

A disservice to both American heroes, IMO

Major D

I think the nation will survive. There’s been 7 years out of 250 that have profiled actual historic women. I’m including 3 years of SBA + 4 years of AWQ– and not counting depictions of Lady Liberty. I don’t think that’s a lot to be bothered about. As for youth sports, I don’t think Kennedy would have minded.

Major D

By the way, the Paralympics have nothing to do with this as we’re talking about youth sports here- something JFK was firmly for, having started the School Fitness Program. I’m not sure why you’re making it about athletes with physical disabilities competing on the world stage? Or, if you’re conflating that with the Special Olympics, for those with intellectual disabilities, then you’d be off base there, too. It was JFK’s sister Eunice who chaired his presidential panel on people with ID and later established the Special Olympics. Their sister Rosemary Kennedy had ID. The US Mint’s 1995 commemorative on the… Read more »

Ok, I see where I mixed up the youth quarters with the paralympic halves. But I hardly think that it dishonors Kennedy, whose legacy was actually one of inclusion.

Major D, did you ever watch The Twilight Zone 1985 episode “Profile in Silver” which has a connection to the 1964 Silver Kennedy Half Dollar?

Major D

Yes, and it occurred to me if you were to go back in time and ask Kennedy if he would mind having an alternating design on the back of his quarter his first response would be… “wait, what am I doing on the quarter?”

youth sports? i’m guessing it should be Madden NFL, tik tok, minecraft, roblox and fortnite for the first year…

Good one, c_q. I had to laugh because you hit the nail on the head!
