Dr. Seuss Characters Set to Grace Limited-Edition Coins

21

For the first time since its founding in 1993, Dr. Seuss Enterprises has approved depicting the images of famous characters created by Theodor Seuss Geisel on legal tender collector coins. Geisel, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author of scores of beloved children’s books, is known worldwide simply as "Dr. Seuss."

In an agreement with Kevin Lipton Rare Coins of Beverly Hills, California, royalties paid for the use of the Dr. Seuss characters on planned limited-edition gold, silver, and base metal commemorative coins will go to Dr. Seuss Enterprises (www.DrSeussEnterprises.com). Dr Seuss Enterprises’ profits benefit charitable organizations that focus on causes such as education, health, animal conservation, and the arts.

"Initial plans include coins dated 2025 depicting adored characters from some of the most popular books created by Dr. Seuss: The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, and Green Eggs and Ham," explained Lipton. "Dr. Seuss Enterprises was formed to protect and promote the intellectual property of Dr. Seuss, and this will be the first authorized use of his characters on coins."

Geisel (1904-1991) published his first Dr. Seuss children’s book in 1937. He subsequently authored and illustrated more than 60 books, and over 600 million copies have been sold. He received a Pulitzer Prize in 1984 in recognition of his "special contribution over nearly half a century to the education and enjoyment of America’s children and their parents."

Geisel also won Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Emmy® awards in 1978 and 1982, and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Oscar® awards in 1947 and 1951.

Specific information will be announced later this year about the availability of the Dr. Seuss coins that will be struck in the United Kingdom by The Commonwealth Mint & Philatelic Bureau.

Thankful for the percentage off this Thurs but as Kaiser pointed out – Buyer beware!

No returns – as is!

I do think one can look at the latest sales reporting from the mint and see the negative returns as a means of knowing what will be offered up for sale on Thurs.

Tony@GA, getting 20% off on the Gold coins won’t be enough. If they gave a 30% discount on Gold, it would still be a hole lot more than spot. They may get some sales but I wouldn’t bet on it. The Mint has already unloaded thousands of these coins to AP’s and possibly to other big dealers. Who knows. One of the TV Coin shows just had the 2017, graded PF70, the other night that they were pedaling. About two weeks ago they had another coin, graded, they were selling that was from what they call the “West Point Hoard”… Read more »

Hardly off the rails at all, AKBob. I would say you called it as you see it and that’s the most that can be expected of anyone here. It’s not surprising you might be suspicious of what the Mint is up to this time after having been, like so many others of us, burned all too many times by an endless assortment of misfires courtesy of our beloved and highly esteemed national coin emporium.

John Q. Coinage

They can’t just melt those dinged and scratched coins, unless they are mistakenly misplaced or “melted” by oopsy boopsy

Kaiser Wilhelm

John Q. Coinage,

Now that they’re going to be unloading years-old gold and other coins on us from the Mint they will be saving themselves the cost of recycling plus making good money on formerly much cheaper stuff. They’ll be coming out way ahead of the game on this latest gambit.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Good call and a great catch, Tony@GA. It would be one of those supreme ironies if the Mint is using this sale to rid itself of those very coins which had been found to be unacceptable by customers who as a result returned them, except this time these same coins are going out with a no return policy. How very fitting…not!

Welcome to the US Mint, the New Niue! Come on, people, I set up my username to honor Dr. Seuss, but this is just ridiculous.

Kaiser Wilhelm

“New Niue”! I love it, Sam-I-am, and kudos to you for that inventive moniker!

Antonio

I’m holding out for the Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Snoopy, Woodstock and Peppermint Patty coins. What’s next? Godzilla?

Kaiser Wilhelm

Stormy Daniels?

Rick

Sam I don’t think the USM is quite there yet? And I hope they don’t fall for this nonsense like they did for Superman coins.. Below are quotes taken from the article up above….
“Dr. Seuss Enterprises has approved depicting the images of famous characters created by Theodor Seuss Geisel on legal tender collector coins.”

” Specific information will be announced later this year about the availability of the Dr. Seuss coins that will be struck in the United Kingdom by The Commonwealth Mint & Philatelic Bureau.”

Right you are, Rick! My fault for not reading the text of the article closely enough. My only defense is that it was late when I posted!

Still, after Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman et al. in 2025, one does wonder what’s next…

Maybe we could have King Kong and Godzilla on proof Ag!

Rich

I’d like to see a Wyatt Earp silver dollar.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Rich,

Is it possible our generation saw one too many cowboy movies as children?

Major D

It may very well come to custom designs MTO. Not unlike ordering a photo birthday cake.

Kaiser Wilhelm

At which point, Major D, the US Mint can merge with the Niue-San Marino Coin & Stamp Co and be one big happy totally irrelevant family.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Rick,

Until I got to the part of the article that explained the source of the Dr Seuss coins I too thought it was the US Mint that had gotten itself involved with this nonsense.

By the way, I love that name, “The Commonwealth Mint & Philatelic Bureau”; what an amazing name invention that is!

VA Bob

Will it have King Charles eating green eggs and ham on the reverse?

VA Bob

I do not like these gimmick coins this fall.
I do not like them in a hall.
I do not like them in a stall.
No, I do not like these gimmick coins at all.

Kia99

Excellent VA Bob, I tried to come up with a Seussian response but you succeeded. Did you notice other amazing coins from this mint like the Monuments in Moonlight series?

Fiji? I wonder how collectable their stuff is? No matter, my acquisitions department is closed.
