2024 $20 Royal Canadian Air Force Centennial Silver Coin Released

89

2024 marks 100 years since a professional air force was created for the defence of Canadian freedom and sovereignty. To honour the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), a national institution dedicated to our national security, and the generations of personnel who have served it through peace and war, the Royal Canadian Mint has launched the 2024 $20 Fine Silver Coin – The Royal Canadian Air Force Centennial. The coin’s reverse design by Edmonton, Alberta artist David Moore features iconic aircraft that open windows on the celebrated past and promising future of the RCAF.

2024 $20 Royal Canadian Air Force Centennial Silver Coin

David Moore chose the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lighting II, the next generation of fighter jet to enter service as the symbol of the future RCAF. Depicting its illustrious past are a Supermarine-designed Spitfire fighter, the Allied forces’ master of skies throughout the Second World War, as well as a Sopwith Camel, an agile combat biplane that helped Canada and its allies win the First World War and remained in active service when the RCAF was founded.

This motif is elevated by the engraving of "SIC ITUR AD ASTRA", the RCAF motto which stands for "Such is the pathway to the stars". The design is completed by the iconic maple leaf-adorned RCAF roundel, and the double date "1924-2024". The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.

Rick,

That looks like something you would buy. It has all the “Rick Hallmarks” on it. A total “Rock Star Coin” for sure.

E1, You knocked that one out!✓ Good stuff! I woke up today all sore & stiff. Well..It turns out that my Horse, he had gotten so tall that I fell off.! So today I got back to ‘basics’ and broke open a Cent box and did my thing, looked for Copper. I had a good haul out of several rolls. The most notable were a 1961 Canada in PL. And a 1940-S Lincoln in VG? **I did take delivery of something of great value today…I’m a good listener, You’ll see!..See pic. Tonight it was Corn Chips dipped in Baked Beans… Read more »

Rick, You will enjoy that Carson optic. It is so easy on the eyes. I have the exact same one. I’ve had it for over a decade and no problems. The lighting is great and the batteries last forever. It’s easy on the pants pocket too. With loops, as the lens power increases, and the lens diameter gets smaller, the eye pain factor increases dramatically. The 10.1 inch digital scope is also a great companion tool too. Having the two is the only way to go. Finally, take your time getting back up on that horse. Riding with you these… Read more »

Guys (and gals?) I just spent 10-15 minutes searching EVERY comment made to this article trying to find the new responses (since my last one). Rick,

Here are the two 1998-S Silver Mattes that I have. The coin is # 24 in the “100 Greatest U.S. Modern Coins (Fourth Edition, 2017, pg. 34).” The mintage is estimated at 62,000. Depth of strike and centering is critical to SP-70. Avoid the spots.

E1, Thanks for sharing those, they are such great coins-That finish… There are not many spot free out there, I look here and there for Gems. The one I posted above I totally like it..**However take a look! The strike is clean & detailed on the obverse, the reverse has decent wing depth–**But look at the Shield, tail feathers & arrows, ouch.. The depth & detail is sorely lacking compared to the obv..Overall weak strike really IMO, but hey… Common? A worn reverse die? Light planchet? or otherwise? But you can also see their push for you to buy from them(same here w/adds). Sure, they are a/the leader in current pricing, particularly for dealers, with dealer lists too, but I’m not interested in them… I don’t know though? not now.. Hey Rick, it’s kinda incestuous how PCGS has morphed from a 3rd party grader to a seller/retailer as well…….blind grading

Stay too long and they want your$$ They’re so huge(PCGS & NGC), I think NGC is bigger(owned by Certified Collectables Group)..PCGS has AK and I on the hook lately–AK more with all that sealed box shipping.. $25 bucks to grade my ’08-W $10, and $43 bucks to ship & handle! yikes $68-lol. Rick

Dave I replied, and now it’s gone, even the ability to go back years for reference, as Cali mentioned recently. I basically told you to hang in there with your Silver Proof Quarters in hopes of spot gaining traction(and it has), and you won’t be too regretful if you did buy some new ones? Grey Sheet is a pay site. Registration is required and there is an upper price tier for dealers. It is so big and busy that it is hard to get visibility on your comments. Canada does it again. Another great coin from the RCM. Wow, an F-35 Super Lightening. I didn’t know Canada had those. The RCM is 20 years ahead of the Mint. Their Peace Dollars and their Double Maples have set the bar for North American Numismatics.

Major D

E 1, no offense but not my cup of tea. Collecting is definitely a subjective endeavor, and there’s no right and no wrong. As Kaiser would always say on this site- to each their own. While I like several of RCM’s coins this one is too stylized for me. I’d say RCM has been innovative in terms of shapes and embellishments like color plating, colorized, holograms, super incuse, bejeweling, textures and motion and photo effects to name a few but I don’t always like the result and wouldn’t say 20 years ahead of the US Mint. (though I do own… Read more »

Major D, Thank you for sharing. That is what a blog is for. To share ideas. Personally myself, I am a big fan of the RCM’s gold gilding on silver, and I would like to see that on an ASE someday. The RCM’s super incused coins are a shocker too. Now, add in their micro engraving technology. But, most importantly, the RCM’s introduction of MintShield is significant and something the US Mint should give consideration too. My collection is 97% US Mint, and the remaining percentage is Canada and Mexico. So, I am not a trader. I just love coins… Read more »

Ditto back at you Dave about this site! The Mint prices are high but so is food, fuel, & housing. That’s the only positive I can get out of the Mint’s prices. Everything is up. Maybe there’s hope for the Flowing Hair, or 2026 as far as something worthwhile for you to buy? Even the Cent–Maybe something similar to the 2019-W’s–Something within the Mint Sets again? I search for copper cents from time to time..I have at least 30,000 copper cents(12 boxes full)..Call me crazy–Even more crazy? Rick and Dave, I’m a wheat and copper Lincoln cent collector, too. I have no idea how many copper I have as they’re all thrown into containers. Though I do separate out the 1982s (and 1983s looking for the rare copper) and have a lot to weigh. I do look at the dates and mints beforehand, and my experience has been that the S-mints for the 1968-1974 are the hardest to come across (harder even than finding wheats and 2009s). Here is one way to keep your certification costs down. Build Dansco sets in Gem State, use the corrosion inhibiting jackets, and store them proper. In time, you will find happiness, and feel like a true numismatic historian. After 30+ years of certifying coins, I have realized that you can’t certify everything and all that money spent on plastic can be spent on other coins. Sometimes, I will buy a key date coin in a high grade, crack it out, and use it to complete an album. Albums are an artistic thing of beauty when they are done proper and… Read more »

Snooze, you lose! Unfortunately GateWest has raised its price by $35, for that 2017/2018 Combo Coin Lore set offering. Now $204.95 vs the $169.95 they’d been advertising them for. So now instead of $29.16/oz coin, they’ll set you back $34.99 per 1oz coin. I had been thinking about picking up another of these 2-set offerings, however not any longer. They still have those $29.95 specials on the 2013 1oz Chinese Lunar NY “Snake” and the 2011 “D-10 Locomotive”.(Pg 18/19 of “Sale” or you can look them up by their year. Included inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “SATURN V,” and “ALABAMA.” Better chance than not, this will be the hottest AI $1 in 2024? PS… Read more »

I guess the trick is to put some bleach in your eyes before viewing! I saw Totality in Ohio, but of course with the right glasses- pretty cool to see!

CaliSkier!

I got my 1964 SMS FS Nickel !!✔️

You were correct. Bidder #8 was all in from the get go. You wonder if it was the coin sellers’ buddy? I suspect that it goes on at the big auction houses just as much as the eBay auctions do?…An $.05 face value coin for $41,231.25…

Rick, I don’t know which is better, your bidding skills, or you picking ability. Also, at these price levels, you need to be very careful of shill bidders. Being a Kennedy connoisseur, the 1964 SMS Kennedy has always been on my radar. However, they seldomly ever come to market and they just keep going up in price. The 1964 SMS Kennedy half and your amazing SMS Jefferson nickel are #7 in the “100 Greatest Modern U.S. Coins (fourth edition, Whitman©2017, pg. 15).” I have the 1994 and the 1997 SMS Jefferson nickels. Your 1964 SMS Jefferson Nickel is the rarest… Read more »

Those are some choice gems there, talk about a nice score. Did you submit them yourself? Unfortunately I am not the winning Bidder #8 of whom started out with the very first bid @ $10,000, yet had a secret bid set so high, that all incoming bids thereafter($500 a pop) were automatically up/out bid. Hence my suspicions of shill shenanigans…He won his own coin I suspect, at $10,000 higher that last at auction in 2021 @Stacks/Bowers… If you recall, Cali and I had bantered a bit about this coin on MNB just days before it’s demise. If my wife found… Read more »

I meant ‘fortunately'(not the winning bidder)! Thanks for your vote of confidence anyway E1 !

Rick,

Maybe you are better off without that nickel. The 1964 SMS Kennedy Half is the one to get.

Cheers

What are the identifiers for the 1964 SMS Kennedy half dollar NOT in the original packaging? I’ve heard of these, but never seen one

AKBob

Great question as I’ve been wondering that myself! Any of the SMS coins in ‘64 are great ones! I’d love having the Kennedy Half & the Lincoln/Penny cent!! My wife would make me sell them off so I wouldn’t tell her their values, lol! If I didn’t sell per her orders, that’s “if” she knew, I’d be waking up with dirt in my mouth (dead/deceased), lol!! !!!
