In futures trading Wednesday, gold prices finished flat while those for silver, platinum and palladium declined after sharp gains on Tuesday.

Gold for February delivery was unchanged at $1,825.40 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"Both markets [gold and silver] are pausing after posting solid gains Tuesday, amid wobbly global stock and financial markets that prompted some safe-haven demand for the metals, especially on Tuesday," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.

Gold futures traded between $1,821.30 and $1,833.80. They advanced 1.5% on Tuesday and they dipped 0.1% on Monday.

Silver for March delivery retreated 7.7 cents, or 0.3%, to close at $24.194 an ounce. Silver futures ranged from $24.05 to $24.53. They surged 4.6% on Tuesday, for their highest settlement since April 21, and they gave back 0.6% on Monday.

In PGM futures on Wednesday:

  • January platinum declined $11, or 1.1%, to $1,002 an ounce, trading between $996.60 and $1,017.50.

  • Palladium for March delivery fell $66.70, or 3.9%, to $1,666.80 an ounce, ranging between $1,660 and $1,739.50.

Gold ended up flat today, but did you know one ounce of gold can be flattened into a translucent sheet 0.000018 cm thick and covering 9 square meters or beaten into a thin continuous sheet measuring roughly 100 square feet.
