Precious metals divided Tuesday with gold and silver rising and platinum and palladium falling. For a second day, pricing changes in all but palladium were modest.
Gold for December delivery edged up $3.90, or 0.2%, to settle at $1,658 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"The gold and silver markets got an upside boost in the aftermath of a weaker-than-expected U.S. consumer confidence index report for October that helped drop in the U.S. dollar index to sharply lower levels and also pushed U.S. Treasury yields down,” Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note. "The downbeat consumer confidence index report may prompt the Federal Reserve to back off sooner on its aggressive U.S. monetary tightening."
On Tuesday, Conference Board survey data showed that U.S. consumer confidence decreased in October following back-to-back monthly gains.
On the day, gold futures traded between $1,641.20 and $1,666.80. They slipped 0.1% on Monday.
Meanwhile, silver for December delivery rose 16 cents, or 0.8%, to settle at $19.349 an ounce. Silver futures ranged from $18.74 to $19.41. They gained 0.7% on Monday.

January platinum shed $6.90 or 0.7%, to $919.70 an ounce, trading between $907.60 and $933.40.
- Palladium for December delivery fell $49, or 2.5%, to $1,918.80 an ounce, ranging from $1,869.50 to $1,997.
