Precious metals climbed as a group Thursday, scoring gains ranging from 0.6% for gold to 5.6% for palladium. Gold’s increase was its third straight following six losses.
Gold for December delivery tacked on $9.90 to settle at $1,771.40 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The finish was gold’s best since Aug. 17.
"Short covering in the futures markets and perceived value buying in the cash markets are featured in both metals. However, the U.S. dollar index is up from its daily low and crude oil prices have lost their early gains, which did push the metals off their daily highs," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.
Gold futures traded between $1,763 and $1,778.80. They inched up 0.02% on Wednesday, they advanced 0.7% on Tuesday, and they declined 0.8% on Monday to log their lowest settlement since July 27.
Silver for September delivery added 21.3 cents, or 1.1%, to end at $19.12 an ounce. Silver futures ranged from $18.95 to $19.26. They dipped 0.6% on Wednesday, they rose 0.8% on Tuesday, and they shed 1% on Monday, also for their lowest finish since July 27.

After registering its lowest settlement since July 26, October platinum gained $7.10, or 0.8%, to $873.90 an ounce, trading between $865.40 and $879.
- Palladium for September delivery soared $114.20 to $2,139.80 an ounce, ranging from $2,024.50 to $2,160. On Tuesday, palladium at $1,972.90 an ounce marked its lowest settlement since July 21.
