Gold ended slightly ahead on Thursday while silver, platinum and palladium declined. Gold’s gain was its fourth in five sessions.
Gold for December delivery added $4.20, or 0.2%, to settle at $1,795.20 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"Gold prices are modestly higher in midday U.S. trading, on some safe-haven demand and bulls taking advantage of the earlier dip in prices to do some bargain hunting," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,781.30 to a high of $1,800.40. They declined 1% on Wednesday, they edged 0.1% higher on Tuesday, for their highest settlement since Aug. 5, and they rose 1.3% on Monday.
Silver for September delivery fell 22.50 cents, or 1%, to settle at $23.55 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $23.44 and $23.90. They shed 0.5% on Wednesday, they climbed 1% on Tuesday, and they gained 2.4% on Monday.

October platinum declined $18, or 1.8%, to $975.50 an ounce, ranging from $976 to $995.70.
- Palladium for September delivery fell $42.40, or 1.7%, to $2,388.30 an ounce, trading between $2,352 and $2,427.
