Precious metals divided Thursday with gold and silver falling and platinum and palladium rising. Gains for platinum and palladium were actually their fourth in a row.

Gold for August delivery shed $6.70, or 0.4%, to settle at $1,776.70 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The "current global optimism has caused traders and other mid-term investors to rotate away from defensive values and safe havens to riskier assets, which represents a strong bearish market driver for gold," MarketWatch quoted Pierre Veyret, technical analyst at ActivTrades.

Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,772.70 to a high of $1,788.60. They edged 0.3% higher on Wednesday, they gave back 0.3% on Tuesday, and they moved up 0.8% on Monday.

Silver for July delivery lost 6.1 cents, or 0.2%, to close at $26.05 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $25.86 and $26.25. They rose 1% on Wednesday, they shed 0.7% on Tuesday, and they edged up 0.2% on Monday.

In other precious metals prices on Thursday:

  • July platinum added $7.40, or 0.7%, to $1,093.90 an ounce, ranging from $1,067.40 to $1,096.50.

  • Palladium for September delivery tacked on $13.40, or 0.5%, to $2,643.90 an ounce, trading between $2,604 and $2,656.50.
