Gold Prices Dip 0.2%; Palladium Hits Another Record

Palladium prices closed Jan 16 at a new record of $2,177.80 an ounce

Gold, silver and platinum fell Thursday while palladium moved ahead for yet another settlement record.

Gold for February delivery declined $3.50, or 0.2%, to settle at $1,550.50 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"Gold is softer right now on stronger equities, and as the geopolitical front is also getting a little quiet when it comes to China and Iran issues," Reuters quoted Bob Haberkorn, senior market strategist at RJO Futures.

Gold prices ranged from a low of $1,548 to a high of $1,558.20. They gained 0.6% on Wednesday, they declined 0.4% on Tuesday — for their lowest close since Jan. 2, and they lost 0.6% on Monday.

Silver for March delivery slipped 4.9 cents, or 0.3%, to settle at $17.939 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $17.87 and $18.06. They rebounded 1.4% on Wednesday, they dropped 1.4% on Tuesday — for their weakest settlement since Dec. 23, and they shed 0.6% on Monday.

In other precious metals prices Thursday:

  • April platinum lost $24.40, or 2.4%, to $1,001.20 an ounce, ranging between $998.40 and $1,046.70.

  • Palladium for March delivery rose $12.70, or 0.6%, to a record settlement of $2,177.80 an ounce. Palladium traded between $2,163.40 and $2,244.80.

London Precious Metals Prices

In comparing earlier fixed London gold and silver prices from Wednesday PM to Thursday PM:

  • Gold rose $5.55, or 0.4%, to $1,554.55 an ounce.
  • Silver added 16 cents, or 0.9%, to $18.01 an ounce.
