US Mint Sales: Silver Coins Rise, Gold Coins Slow

US Mint Sales Figures ImageSprinting past all other collectible coins to easily become the U.S. Mint sales leader in just three days were the American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollars.

Nearing 100K from their launch last Thursday through to Sunday, 66,209 proof and 32,149 uncirculated coins were ordered — very sound starting numbers. Compared to last year’s commemoratives, the debuting level was a bit more than half that of the popular Lincoln Silver Dollars, and more than double that of the Louis Braille Silver Dollars. The Lincolns eventually sold out. The Braille’s did not, but their figures were solid, nevertheless.

In other products… Both silver sets outperformed their previous weekly gains. The US Mint Silver Proof Set rose 2,687 to end at 664,885. The DC & US Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set climbed 930 to finish at 273,541.

The 2010 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set continues to grab collector’s interest. 25,512 more were purchased, bringing their total to 326,464 in less than one month.

2009 Buffalo Gold Proof Coins stepped back by almost half. Their $50 price increase last Wednesday was not helpful. Weekly sales climbed 413 versus the prior 771. Yet, First Spouse Gold Coins managed to increase as a group despite a $25 price increase for each coin. Total units rose 507 compared to last week’s 446.

American Eagle Bullion coin sales during the last seven days eased. Gold Eagles rose by 16,000 versus 22,000. Silver Eagles advanced 425,000 compared to 800,000, but notably topping 6 million for the year. Precious metals prices have been on a strong upswing this week, which should translate to better eagle gains.
