Dozens of Salvation Army bell ringers experienced an amplified feelings of generosity from gift givers this year. There were reported accounts of over 30 gold coins donated in Salvation Army kettles.

There’s likely many more. It’s nearly impossible to track special coin donations on the national scale through news accounts.

Anonymous donors in the Chicago area alone have reportedly given at least 15 gold and nearly 60 silver coins. Although each was given by someone with a generous heart, most don’t make the news as there’s no face and resulting story to associate with the person giving.

The festive holiday season is fast approaching and the U.S. Mint is ready with their latest coin and product catalog.

The Mint has announced that the new catalog will be available Thursday, October 25. In a statement, United States Mint Director Ed Moy said:

“Our catalog features beautifully crafted products that embody the spirit of America. The women and men of the United States Mint are proud to offer them to the public.”

The first sentence you could expect from any Mint Director. The second sentence, however, is rather refreshing.

Giving coins for gifts on birthdays, graduations, Christmas and other special events has exploded in recent years. The 50 State Quarters© Program started back in 1999 helped nudge up coin collecting and coin gift giving. The new Presidential $1 Coins program started this year will likely continue the momentum.
