2017-W $50 Uncirculated American Gold Eagle and Presentation Case

Sales of the 2017-W $50 Uncirculated American Gold Eagle ended at 5,800 coins

The U.S. Mint’s latest sales report is abbreviated with the number of products listed down to 248 from 302. Most all of the missing products have not sold out so those should come back next week with refreshed totals.

One coin that is gone for good is the 2017-W $50 Uncirculated American Gold Eagle. Its sales hadn’t been moving a lot lately and the Mint pulled it from its catalog.

The Gold Eagle’s most recent triple digit sales gain happened in the week ended Oct. 15. Since that time, it has netted a combined sales increase of 32 coins. Its last reported sales dropped by 53 coins to 5,800 coins. That marks a new mintage low as it’s below the previous low of 5,829 coins for the 2012 issue.

Does anyone know just how long the Mint can continue to sell the 2016 Gold Liberty Walking half dollar and Standing quarter coins? Will there ever be an end to those?
Just asking….

Mike Unser (CoinNews.net) November 16, 2017 at 10:07 pm

Jp, those two coins go off-sale on Dec. 31 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

joera November 16, 2017 at 10:19 pm

Jp
I got an email from the Mint labeled “LAST CHANCE” with a list of products no longer being sold after Dec. 2017. I think the date was the 28th. The Gold Walking Liberty and the Gold Standing Liberty are on that list.

joera November 16, 2017 at 10:21 pm

I guess I had my date wrong.

KC&SO November 17, 2017 at 9:27 am

It amazes me how two coins, possible new lows for the UNC AGE and 1/10th AGE, can sell out and then be immediately removed from the mint’s sales report while others, such as the 2016 Comm’s that can’t be sold, among others, still continue to be listed on the sales report.

It usually takes about 3-4 weeks for final (unaudited) sales numbers to stabilize once any item either goes Currently Unavavailable or Sold Out.., though these two where instantly pulled within the week of SO (UNC AGE) or CU (1/10th AGE).

Bizarre.., I suspect it’s the mint wanting to minimize returns from the recent high sales numbers. Surprising, 630 of the 4-coin sets sold last week.., how often does that ever happen?

I bet dollars to donuts that sucker will be pulled from the website and sales report once it goes CU/SO.

I just continue to be amazed at how dysfunctional the mint’s operation of that product website and sales report remains.

Seth Riesling November 17, 2017 at 10:27 am

KC&SO –

Your observations about the Mint’s handling of sales numbers & audited/unaudited mintage numbers are spot on. They have been squirrelly for years! It typically takes the Mint about 2 years to release final, official mintage/sales figures. I think they still have accountants who use an abacus for calculations & write in paper accounting ledgers with a pencil & later a computer data entry person inputs the info at their leisure! Lol

Happy collecting!

Jp November 17, 2017 at 12:48 pm

Thanks Mike and Joera for the info.
Is there a reason why those coins can be sold until the end of Dec of 2017?
Doubtful they will ever sell out…
I think a coin should either only be sold in the year it is made available or 1 year from the date it was introduced.
That’s it.

NWRobert November 17, 2017 at 3:22 pm

Wow, the 2017W Uncirculated Gold Eagle is now the lowest mintage of the series. The 2012W was 5,829 and the 2017 finished at 5,800. I still don’t understand why the walking liberty hasn’t sold out. low mintage for sure.
Have fun!

Joe Brown November 20, 2017 at 10:43 am

I was looking threw the pages of my 2015 Blue Book to sea the price of the ungraded *AGE burnished fractional 1/10 oz. 1/4 oz. 1/2 oz., they were minted from 2006, 07, 2008, with the *w mint mark. The late great Robert Chambers of the coin vault TV show turned me on to them before they were minted in 2006, he was a world of information at times if you listen careful, Mike is also, but Mr. Chambers was the master of all of them. My fractional,s are all gone now, Chambers said these coins will be the ” The Diamond In The Rough” i could not agree more with him. All of them are worth more than the proofs of that year they were minted. The lowest minted of the three years was the 2008 w* 1/4 oz. burnished AGE* with a mintage # of 8,883. My 2015 Blue Book says its worth $950 the proof is $375 & the bullion version is $350 they did mint more of the other two, but it was not a huge amount. My 2008 w* 1/4 oz. came back a grade 70 from NGC just about all my frac’s did. I remember in 08 the 1/10 oz. w* the mint drop it from $129 to $127. I was like a kid in a candy store buying *Bazooka Bubble gum. The West Point Mint* minted 12,657 of them, the 2015 Blue Book says you will get at least $285 “raw” that,s ungraded. That just *me that you always don’t have to grade your coins from the mint.* Chambers* you are the TV coin *icon man of them all. Your voice gave my wife a headache at 3: am, i can’t thank you enough, God Bless ya, & all the coin world, peace to all. smile*

Chas Barber November 20, 2017 at 1:02 pm

Joe good luck with that, I can’t get much for $5 Nat’l Park gold Unc with montage <4k….no dealer cares……they offer a little over spot.

Joe Brown November 20, 2017 at 4:45 pm

Chas -, hi, Just me maybe, but i* will take not* take anything below *Blue Book* value. They_ ALL- can kiss* my hard cheeks. But i have more of them any ways of what coins i was talking about in my above blog. If that,s whats going on right now, like you say above with a mintage of 4000 with your *Nat*l Park com., gold $5. coin, which i do not have in my blue book*, but com’s ar,’nt big hits, only the old one are, i* love cm’s myself i* wish i had the complete modern collection from 1982 & on, silver, gold, & clad 1/2$’s & silver half,s. “”””” buy the way, i left out the word “,NO”, in 6 lines above my words. “”””” But i have more “””””” i* wanted to say. Just wait if you can last that long, you & your coin will have your day in the sun, it just takes so much longer, just like all my *Indian* head cent*s that i bought when i was a kid* for .05, .10, .15, in good to very fine condition. It’s not a lot, but they all are *to me* a lot more money than what i bought them for in the *blue book* right now. A good dealer would sell them for the price in the Red Book* right now, if you know what i* mean. Mr. Chambers never said to much about com’s being a *diamond in the rough, the one i do remember is the Indian* head silver com, but that was after the fact, he* said that was a diamond in the rough before they went on sale at the mint. Listen careful, i know it,s not easy to here everything rittillin Mike* but he sometimes give you a ‘hint’ of a up & coming diamond* in the rough, that you might have a “shot” at buying at the mint. If you have to but after the mint, it’s a not a diamond in the rough, to me* that is. peace* man.

Joe Brown November 20, 2017 at 4:53 pm

i did it again,*****But i have no more******* also the word *buy* not the word “but”‘ that’s in their some place. thee, end.

Chas Barber November 20, 2017 at 6:31 pm

Joe, I am too patient, $trong hands for years, I still have mpst of the the 90% coins I pulled out as a cashier @ cafe~ in 6th grade….1968!! Sold many when AG hit $50 got something like 35x face…..a beautiful thing. Proof gold is a great way to go, never a potential gov’t seizure (good luck nowadays!) I have the low mintage Buffalo fractionals some proofs, bought the whole set of Uncs. very low mintage quite cool, pricey but not selling..YET–> the 10th Z is a gold Buff nickel! Good luck to you & all….one day someone has to buy this stuff…….

Joe Brown November 20, 2017 at 7:23 pm

we always can sell them, but it’s a whole lot better when the timing is right, where in the same boat as far as our coins go. The coin world needs young blood like we were back in 68*. I’m thankful for it all, i have learned so much, and sent a boat load$$$$$$$$$. simile, & peace*. *spent a boat load*, one of these days i* might it right the first time, in god*+* i* trust. ” give me break God* will ya!
