Precious metals futures registered gains ranging from 0.6% for palladium to 1.5% for gold

Gold and silver futures snapped a three-session losing streak Thursday, with each scoring their best close in 3-1/2 months as the U.S. dollar weakened and safe-haven demand climbed.

Gold for April delivery tacked on $18.10, or 1.5%, to settle at $1,251.40 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The settlement is the highest since Nov. 10 when prices ended at $1,266.40 an ounce.

"The dollar’s backed off, bond yields have backed off, and that’s given a bit of support for gold," Reuters quoted Robin Bhar at Societe Generale.

Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,236.40 to a high of $1,252.20. They are 1% higher so far this week.

Elsewhere, silver for March delivery advanced 16.7 cents, or 0.9%, to $18.117 an ounce. Like for gold, the settlement is the highest since Nov. 10. Silver futures traded between $17.92 and $18.21. They are 0.5% higher on the week.

In rounding out precious metals dealings:

  • April platinum added $9.20, or 0.9%, to $1,011.90 an ounce, ranging from $997.40 to $1,020.60.

  • Palladium for March delivery added $4.25, or 0.6%, to $773.30 an ounce, trading between $762.10 and $780.
