Sales kicked off Monday, Oct. 20, for the 2014-W Proof American Platinum Eagle. New figures from the United States Mint show collectors snapped up 3,341 by Sunday.

The sales start is the quickest in three years for the annual series of 99.95% pure platinum coins, though there’s an extra few day in this first reporting period compared to past years.

2009-2014 Proof Platinum Eagle Sales

2013 Proof Platinum Eagle $1,800 July 18 – 21 2,139 5,745 / 15,000

2009 Proof Platinum Eagle $1,792 Dec 3 – 6 7,207 7,945 / 8,000

2009 marked the start of proof Platinum Eagle designs depicting the core principles in the preamble of the U.S. Constitution. This year’s coin ends the design series. That factor and its price are supportive. The opening price of this year’s issue at $1,650 is the lowest of the group. The U.S. Mint actually had the coin listed for $1,600 during the first few hours of its release.

What happens to the 9255 coins that were not “sold” but minted last year?
