2011 Proof Gold Eagle Prices May Increase

up trend chartThe United States Mint on Wednesday may increase the prices on the newly released 2011 Proof Gold Eagle Coins, the First Spouse Gold Coins and the Proof American Gold Buffalo.

These collector coins are subject to weekly price adjustments based on $50 swings in the price of gold. The United States Mint has a numismatic gold coin price policy that uses the average of the London gold fix between the previous Thursday AM and following Wednesday AM, and, if necessary, the Wednesday PM fix price as a directional component.

[Editor’s update: The United States Mint raised its gold coin prices right before noon ET on Wednesday. New prices are shown below.]

The Mint’s current numismatic gold coin pricing is based on a gold range of between $1,450.00 and $1,499.99 an ounce. The current average using the available gold prices is $1,503.38 an ounce (see the table below).

London Gold Prices

  AM Fix PM Fix
4/27/2011 (Wednesday) ? ?
4/26/2011 (Tuesday) $1505.00 $1497.50
4/25/2011 (Monday) UK Markets Closed
4/22/2011 (Friday)
4/21/2011 (Thursday) $1507.00 $1504.00

The United States Mint will increase its coin prices if the Wednesday AM fixing stays above $1,486.49 an ounce AND the directional Wednesday PM fixing is $1,500 or higher. Spot gold prices were over $1,509 an ounce in early Wednesday trading, lending support to higher London fixings on Wednesday.

If the triggers are pulled for price increases, the Mint normally freezes and then adjusts prices of the affected product before noon ET. New gold coin prices would be:
