World Coin News announces COTY Award
This week World Coin News announced that the 2005 United States Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Silver Dollar won their 2007 Coin of the Year Award (COTY).
If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering why a coin released back in 2005 is a 2007 year winner. Or, more to the point, why a great coin like the 2005 Marine Corps dollar didn’t win back in 2005!
As it turns out, certain countries issue coins less frequently. To allow wider participation, the COTY award takes this into account and enables coin entries to span a two-year production period. That makes sense!
The World Coin News COTY award was first presented back in 1984. For a list of other 2007 COTY contenders and information about each coin, visit Numismatic News.
