Royal Canadian Mint Marks 30 Years of the $2 Toonie

The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) is marking the 30th anniversary of Canada’s $2 circulation coin — the "Toonie" — with a limited-edition non-circulation special wrap roll for collectors. The milestone commemorates three decades since the bi-metallic coin replaced the banknote of the same denomination in 1996.

More than one billion Toonies have entered circulation since their debut, each bearing the familiar polar bear reverse created by Canadian artist Brent Townsend. The coin quickly became a fixture in everyday transactions following the earlier success of Canada’s $1 coin introduced in 1987 and has since appeared in numerous commemorative versions.

"Over the last three decades, our two-dollar circulation coin has been a pillar of Canadian trade and commerce and given the Mint many opportunities to share meaningful stories of Canada through special commemorative designs," said Simon Kamel, interim president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. "Today, we are wishing the Toonie a happy 30th birthday, and we are looking forward to many more years of service."

Design and Composition

The two-dollar piece was Canada’s first bi-metallic circulation coin, featuring a bonded inner core and outer ring secured by a locking system. Its reverse continues to display Townsend’s polar bear design.

The obverse carried Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy through 2022, including a black-ring commemorative version issued following her passing. Beginning in 2023, the coin adopted the effigy of King Charles III designed by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.

Originally struck with a copper alloy center and pure nickel outer ring, the Mint changed the composition to multi-ply plated steel in 2012 and added advanced security features.

Anniversary Collector Roll

The anniversary collectible is limited to 30,000 rolls and priced at $89.95 CAD.

Rolls are available through the Mint’s website or by phone (1-800-267-1871 in Canada; 1-800-268-6468 in the United States), at Mint boutiques in Ottawa and Winnipeg, participating Canada Post locations, and through authorized dealers and distributors.
