Satin Finish Ends on US Mint Sets

The uncirculated Jefferson Presidential $1 coin on the left features a satin finish. The right business strike Jefferson Presidential $1 coin has a brilliant finish.The satin finish will no longer be used by the United States Mint for uncirculated US Mint Sets and other products, the agency announced last week. Instead, Mint Sets will return to coins which feature a brilliant finish.

This change marks an end to a six-year run featuring the satin finish which was easily distinguishable owing to its frosted appearance. The United States Mint started issuing satin finish US Mint Sets in 2005, stating at the time that "it is handsome and provides consistency for United States Mint uncirculated products." [...]

Gold started the midweek session with a $1.90 per ounce gain, being quoted at $1,387.40 on the bid-side, as against a reading of 80.55 on the dollar index and a 35-cent rise in crude oil (to $90.17 per barrel).

The yellow metal did receive one bit of possibly supportive news, in that the IMF announced that its disposal of 403.3 tonnes of bullion has now been completed.
