The topic discussed this week was the release ceremony for the US Virgin Islands Quarter that occurred on October 9th in St. Thomas. The event was hosted by Deputy US Mint Director Andrew D. Brunhart. The quarter was actually released into circulation on September 28.
American Numismatic Association Executive Director Larry Shepherd takes a few moments to talk with Numismatic News Editor Dave Harper about the future direction ANA will take towards its shows. COLORADO SPRINGS – The American Numismatic Association Board of Governors has approved a balanced operating budget for the 2010 fiscal year (November 1, 2009 to October 31, 2010), signaling the continued financial turnaround in fiscal performance for the Association.
This marks the second consecutive balanced budget submitted to the Board and the third straight fiscal year in which the Association has achieved its projected operating costs, not including certain legal expenses. The previous budget was approved by the Board in March 2009 for the April 1 – March 31 fiscal year; the Board has since changed the fiscal year to begin November 1, to better reflect the Association’s annual operational cycle. COLORADO SPRINGS – The American Numismatic Association will expand its National Money Show™ from three days to four days, beginning with the spring convention in Fort Worth, TX, in March 2010, Executive Director Larry Shepherd announced.
The show, initially scheduled to be open to the public Friday through Sunday, will now be open Thursday, March 25 through Sunday, March 28 at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Dealer set-up will be open on Wednesday afternoon. Adding the extra day signals a commitment from the ANA to expand the size of the National Money Show. Heritage Auction Galleries will be the official auctioneer for the two 2010 American Numismatic Association shows, the Boston World’s Fair of Money® and the Fort Worth National Money Show™, ANA Executive Director Larry Shepherd has announced.

Dwight N. Manley today donated $250,000 to the American Numismatic Association Florence Schook School of Numismatics to fund scholarships for young numismatists to attend the ANA’s annual Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs.
Manley, a noted rare coin collector and sports agent, announced the donation August 5 during the opening ceremony for the ANA’s 2009 World’s Fair of Money® in Los Angeles. In 2002, the ANA Library was named in Manley’s honor after he donated $250,000 to the ANA Headquarters Renovation Fund.
"I am hopeful that this donation will plant the seeds of enrichment in the lives of hundreds of current and future young numismatists, just as when I received that special phone call from Ms. Schook in 1981 telling me I was to receive a scholarship worth $400 to the ANA Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs!" Manley said.
"From being taught by Q. David Bowers, to staying up late in the dorms with all of the other YNs and talking about coins, to being introduced to my first ANA convention and wearing the red vest of being a page and getting Steve Ivy a hot dog with mustard; no amount of money or thanks can begin to show my true appreciation for the ANA and Ms. Schook!"

The American Numismatic Association will introduce its inaugural Museum Showcase, featuring rarely seen numismatic treasures from the Smithsonian Institution, the ANA Edward C. Rochette Money Museum and private collectors, at the 2009 Los Angeles World’s Fair of Money®, Aug. 5-9 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The Museum Showcase will be located on the bourse in a separate location from the Collector Gallery and Mint Promenade, and will feature museum-quality exhibits. Among the rarities on display will be 20 coins from the Smithsonian Institution’s National Numismatic Collection, including the first (1849 pattern) and last (1933) double eagles ever produced as well as a 1907 Saint-Gaudens ultra high relief pattern that President Theodore Roosevelt gave his daughter Ethel as a Christmas gift in 1907. Executive Director also reports improvement in overall financial picture
The American Numismatic Association Board of Governors has approved a balanced operating budget for the 2009-10 fiscal year, signaling a momentous financial turnaround for the ANA, which performed under a projected $1.4 million operating deficit in fiscal year 2008-09.
The approved budget, announced during the Board’s March 13 open session at the Portland National Money Show™, proposes $4,426,380 in expenses while projecting revenues of $4,562,445 – a surplus of $136,065. Projected legal fees of $211,000 are not factored into the budget, but ANA leadership is optimistic this number could be lower.
In addition, Executive Director Larry Shepherd reported significant improvement in the balance sheet, with an increase in the value of the Ben E. Keith Company stock and an infusion of cash into ANA investments. Read the rest of this entry »
The American Numismatic Association’s 2009 Portland National Money Show™ gives visitors the opportunity to see rare coins and paper money, and interact with the country’s premier numismatists.
The show, held March 13-15 at the Oregon Convention Center, features marquee and collector exhibits, educational presentations, and hundreds of top dealers.
"The ANA is thrilled to be coming back to this great numismatic city," said ANA Executive Director Larry Shepherd. "The Portland National Money Show in 2004 was one of our best, and high dealer interest, great educational activities and impressive exhibits point to an even better show this year."
The marquee exhibits are highlighted by the Linderman-duPont specimen 1804 Draped Bust silver dollar. Insured for $3.5 million, this will be the first public display of the coin outside the ANA Money Museum in Colorado Springs since its recovery 16 years ago from a famous theft decades earlier. Retired Lt. Col. Adna G. Wilde Jr., former president, Board member, executive director, treasurer and parliamentarian of the American Numismatic Association, died on the morning of Nov. 17 in Colorado Springs. He was 88.
"This is a sad time for our Association," ANA President Barry Stuppler said. "Adna will be remembered as one of the most important leaders in our history. Everyone who knew him respected him for his kindness, professionalism, and service to his country. He was the finest gentleman I’ve ever known, and he will be deeply missed."
A member since 1947 (Life Member 232), Wilde served as executive director from 1968-72, governor from 1973-79, vice president from 1979-81, president from 1981-83 and treasurer from 1983-2008. He received the Farran Zerbe Memorial Award in 1985, the Medal of Merit and Exemplary Service Award in 1991, the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998, and Presidential Awards in 1994, 1998 and 2008. He received the inaugural award named in his honor, the Adna G. Wilde Jr. Award for Excellence, this October.

Funds to be used to help offset costs of Summer Seminar
The Central States Numismatic Society today presented a check for $50,000 to the American Numismatic Association to help fund Summer Seminar, the ANA’s annual summer educational program.
The gift, presented by CSNS President Patti Finner during opening ceremonies of the World’s Fair of Money in Baltimore, will be used to offset costs of operating Summer Seminar.
"The Central States Numismatic Society believes in education," said Finner, who also is vice president of the ANA.
"We believe Summer Seminar is the best opportunity for numismatic education on the planet. This is our 40th anniversary present to the ANA Summer Seminar – we want to make sure it’s around for at least another 40 years."
