So that’s what all those returns are about. They’re the only coins that I see with a weekly negative revision to their numbers.

Indeed you’re right Rob S and Kaiser, their terms are confusing and change over time. The mint’s site says:

“Uncirculated Coins: Are hand-loaded into the coining press and struck on specially burnished blanks, yet have a soft, matte-like finish appearance.”
“Circulating Coins: Are produced for circulations, but those sold directly by the United States Mint are never released to the Federal Reserve Bank”
” Proof blanks are specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes. The blanks are then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice. The coins are then carefully packaged to showcase and preserve their exceptional finish”

It has been a while since they listed any coins in the catalog as having a burnished finish, and under a microscope the finish on these wonderful dollars isn’t an abrasive burnishing.

In 2016 they did the gold version of the 100 yr anniversary Mercury dimes, Standing Liberty qtrs, and Walking Liberty halves. They indicated those were Business Strikes – but sold from the mint. That lead to some disappointment in the anniv re-issues. Those shoulda been Proof (IMO) – makes one wonder.

Just received my confirmation from the Mint. That was fast.

Been put on the Remind Me list for the reverse proof ASEs. Received two email notifications, but when I got to the Mint site, nothing was available. This morning I got no email but for the heck of it checked the Mint site again. Nothing but went into the coin order anyway. To my surprise the button was available. Made my order with no problems whatsoever and it went through for one set. Talk about being at the right place at the right time. I’m only waiting for my confirmation email. After missing ordering on the first day, it’s very satisfying to finally get an order through for this reverse proof set. I now hope to order some more Peace Dollars if they become available again. I like the one I have the most and hope, fingers crossed, that it’ll become a yearly issue.

On top of that, my UNC 2020 palladium says its “Special Strike”? Whazzat?? And the official grade is SP70, so why not MSnn?
Its not “Bullion” since I didnt have to get it from an authorized dealer, got it direct from the mint.

Yup – it doesnt help that they confuse things with something like Enhanced UNC – which has some sort of laser treatment (on the dies?) or something, that gives a frosted effect.
“Burnished” has me scratching my head – is that what they do for bullion coins – or is that Business strike? I’ve only heard of that rather recently (maybe a few years or so). It sounds like a treatment on top of UNC, but why do that for bullion “investment” pieces?

Maybe I’m naive, but I didnt think UNC constituted any kind of other special treatment. Just stamp the coin and immediately encapsulate it, but not put in circulation (bags, rolls, etc). Maybe they typically clean the blanks but skipped a step in this case … perhaps for a more classic look, looking closer to the original coins??
