The mint has never been very good at planning things. Just think "Silver Eagle Privy Mark." I do hope they treat these as bullion and not "instant rarities". I can't take another episode of that with eBay dealers "pre-sailing" them an hour after they are sold out. I wonder how they do this proxy buying?

In reply to <a href="https://www.coinnews.net/2021/01/15/u-s-mint-to-produce-2021-morgan-and-peace-centennial-silver-dollars/#comment-490153">Frank Onolfi</a>.

It all depends on the year and mintmark my friend. I buy MS-63 common date Morgans and cut them out of their "graded" holders with a chop saw. That way someone's waste of money assures me that I get a somewhat accurately graded coin for my Capital Plastics holders. I have received beautiful bright white mint fresh MS-62 Morgans and ones graded MS-64 that look like they have been in a sewer for a few years.

They key is to be patient. Also, bear in mind, unless you have access to millions of dollars, you will never be able to put together a complete MS-64 Morgan date/mintmark set. It just cannot be done. Instead, focus on a year set to begin with in the highest grade you can afford from the most common mint for that year. You'll run into cost problems from 1892 to 1895 no matter which mint, guaranteed. You will also never be able to afford most of the CC dollars in MS-64 as they may not even exist in that grade. The same holds true for O mint dollars. Although the mintages were high in some years, many of them were melted before they saw the light of day. For example, the 1903-O. An MS-64 example will cost you about $600. With 4,450,000 minted, it shouldn't be that rare. However, the Pittman act melted them before they ever made their way to the public. They were discovered by the US Treasury and auctioned by the GSA in the 60's and 70's and many just found their way into circulation only to be snatched up by the public.

Are you wasting you money? No, this is supposed to be a hobby not a money making scheme. I build model rockets and may spend $100 on a kit and spend many hours building and painting it perfectly only to have crash on its first flight. The stock market is a waste of money if you pick the wrong stock. Do your research and read about every date and mintmark. I recommend the Q David Bowers book on any US coin imaginable so get the one on Morgan and Peace Dollars. Nothing is a waste of money if it is something you enjoy doing. Maybe it will take you ten years to put it together. Just don't lose sight of it.
