Adam
And yes, I had quite the shoe collection as well - decided to liquidate about 30-40 pairs on ebay and keep a few of the 'true' keepers. The same should be said of a coin collection. I have many coins and currency as well. Talked to the wife about them (she has a small collection as well) and what to do when I pass. Unfortunately, the reality is that she will only take them to the nearest coin shop(s) and try to get the most money for them. It's crushing to know this, as I've tediously labeled them as to mintage, value, etc. Again - reality check - it won't matter anyway. I've heard stories at the shows of a widow/kids coming to a shop with their loved one's collection, only to be given pennies on the dollar. UGH!
BOTTOM LINE: have an exit strategy for the collection upon your passing. Not sure on your particular situation, but I almost think at some point I may and up liquidating the whole lot, as I know what it's worth and what I can get (even for my own piece of mind!) Keep a handful of the 'keys'. My wife/kids would appreciate a check when I go, rather than cases of coins and currency...
Just my 2 cents lol

ERP manipulation or not, these Innovation dollars are getting ridiculous. It's not the Mint's fault. I checked completed eBay listings around the day of release. A lot of those photos are what I call photo shopped. Some sellers even said "sample photos". There were a few with actual photos of the Pride of Two Nations Enhanced Reverse Proof's obverse, listed as pre-sale for the S mint mark.

You may be right thinking the contractors had a leg up on us but I still think everyone had trouble placing orders. I believe the updated release article here said the Mint claimed there was 1.6 million hits the first hour and at the moment of launch just shy of 5k people on the phone and 100k online. I'm no expert but I see a big supply and demand equation. I don't believe the Mint wants to serve collectors a bowl of sour grapes, that's not good for business. I also wonder why a 30k max. Yet at this point the coin market is determining what collectors are willing to pay. I don't think coin collecting will ever be a dying hobby, just a quiet one, and the oxymoron of collecting is communication, its good for the hobby. For the most part, I think we collectors are all on the same side, young and old. Thanks Mike.

I managed to get one of the 30,000 ERP silver eagles. I also collect Nike shoes and they are also very hard to get sometimes. But the way I see it I already know that I might get lucky and get something nice and if I don't oh well it wasn't ment to be. If the mint made everyone happy then none of the coins would be of any value in the future. I understand the frustration but that is part of the process. If you can't handle that then maybe this hobby or any other hobby like it is not for you. I have been buying coins a little over 10 years and I have never sold a single coin even the ones I have more than one and I hope I never have to.

Jake, I truly believe that the process was rigged by the mint or the contractor that serviced them, or that their site web site had vulnerabilities that were easily compromised. Also, why a 30k max? - makes me wonder. The mint is slowly killing the hobby.

I think blaming the Mint is wrong. At first, yes I was mad but have since let the feeling pass. I also don't believe in boycotts but maybe that's just me. The Mint gave everybody plenty of notice via email before the release. I was working, restricted to my phone for purchases. I was late to the site by 10 minutes and it was slow. I had the item in my cart and by the time I went to check out at 15 minutes past release, everything was depleted. I was totally crushed. Now obviously some dealers and investors found a loop hole and that seems to have ruined it for a lot of collectors. I purchased from an investor on the bay, and I'm very satisfied, it fits my collection and that's what I want. I think the Mint should seek out a resolution to future limits. How a dealer is able to obtain hundreds of coins is beyond me, but they did and they are reaping the rewards, not the Mint.
