2008 American Eagle and Buffalo Bullion CoinsThe collector’s eye is scanning for scarcer gold and platinum coins to purchase after the United States Mint’s announcement on Monday to slash future coins from its numismatic portfolio.

With 22 collector American Eagle and Buffalo gold and platinum coins to face elimination in 2009, opportunities have improved for several to rise in value based on that alone. And even more so for others after comparing their prices and sales figures.

The first sales figures from the United States Mint are in for 2008 fractional Buffalo gold coins. In total, a solid 67,331 of the new fractionals have been sold.

American Buffalo gold coinThe 24 karat gold coins were once offered in one-ounce proof versions only.

On July 22, the Mint expanded the product line by issuing fractional denominations of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights and in both proof and uncirculated.

The 1/10 ounce gold sizes are proving to be the most popular coins. Their lower prices have helped sales even though the Mint charges higher premiums for these smallest coins.

American Buffalo gold coinThe United States Mint announced today the release date for 24-karate fractional American Buffalo Gold coins. Since 2006, the Mint has only issued proof, one-ounce coins in fine .9999 gold.

On Tuesday, July 22, the Mint will offer Buffalo proof and uncirculated coins in fractional weights of one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce and one-tenth ounce.

The will also offer a set including all four coins. In affect, the new offerings follow the Mint’s American Eagle Gold coins program.
