Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park of West Virginia was established on June 30, 1944 as a national monument to protect and commemorate an area that has proven instrumental in the history of the United States. The site is located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.

During the early years of the country, the area served as a ferry point across the river. The armory located in the area helped to outfit the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In later years, it was the scene of John Brown’s abolitionist uprising and was also a strategic location fought for during the American Civil War.
