Today, January 12, 2012, the United States Mint released its second numismatic product of the year, the 2011 Vicksburg National Military Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin. It was made available at a price of $204.95, an amount that may go up or down over time if silver prices make significant direction changes.

A 2011-dated product seems a bit off for the US Mint to be releasing in the year 2012. However, the five ounce program — named the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin™ series — made its first appearance late (in 2011 instead of 2010) as the US Mint had several obstacles to overcome in producing such a large coin […]

News has been ripe with consequences — both good and bad — of silver prices soaring to fresh highs.

On the positive for those positioned, silver coin values are shooting through the roof. But on the bad, high silver prices have caused product suspensions, raised coin prices and other negative changes from governmental mints.

Silver reached over $46 an ounce to end the week, bringing intrinsic silver coin values to highs not seen since the Hunt brothers attempted to corner the silver market in 1980. At that time, silver prices rose just over $50 an ounce for a short span in January. Many think that record could be broken soon […]

Morgan Silver Dollar

Surging bullion prices are bringing into focus the value of silver coins and their prices, as exemplified in several recent coin news articles.

Silver this week topped the $36 an ounce marker, and was actually near $37 an ounce — milestones that have not been accomplished by the precious metal since the Hunt brothers attempted to corner the silver market in 1980 which brought the metal above $50 an ounce.

Investors, collectors and the US Mint have been taking an even closer look at the melt values of coins which have steadily risen […]
