The USM price for the American Platinum Eagle 1oz Proof coins was just lowered to $2,895 (from $3,245). My earlier price estimate of $2,945 was off by 1 tier!

Liquidity was aok even at $116, got 66x face for junk and $2 back of spot for ASEs and AG Pucks. I didn’t sell a lot but was nice to get some $$$. If I had a trunk full, not sure LCS could handle it! Didn’t sell my gold as I was planning, but it may be coming back….Au back over $5k, for,the moment in overseas action.

REB,

The release price should be <strong>$2,945</strong>, based on the 5-day average LBMA Platinum price of $2,380. However, this release price does not take into account tomorrow's Mint pricing criteria, so its just an estimate as of today's average platinum price.

So the Mints remaining current inventory of gold products I’d tallied previously, equates to 33,149.45 Troy ounces, with a melt value of $163,950,549.81, using Kitco close(5pm EST) of $4,945.80. Using the previous retail value($221,267,910) of said leftover Au products, the premium/markup over spot melt as a whole is roughly 35%(34.96%).

Using an American Silver Eagle Proof for an apples to oranges comparison, the numbers look quite different. An ASE PF now costs $173. Using today’s Kitco Ag spot melt close of $85.03, the premium/markup over spot melt is roughly 203.5%. Now if we apply the same silver premium to those remaining gold products, the retail amount would be $333,639,368.86 vs $221,267,910. Hmm… Perhaps this is what some readers mean; when they say U.S. Mint gold is too cheap?

After all, if gold products were priced similarly as silver ones, the Mint would have an added $112+ million in gold retail value on the books. Crazy, to think that could be 1/3 trillion dollar$ in inventory, sitting dark and off the table! PS If we use the 274% markup applied to the annual Uncirculated Set recently that would be $449,224,506! However, who’s willing to pay $16K for 1oz of gold? PS Will the Mint raise precious metal prices on the pricing range table or lower as some are hoping?
