In reply to Foxman69on. They're doing it right now. Predictions for Au this year are in the 6000-6400 range by year end, Ag to 135, according to some. It'll be a bumpy ride for sure as people will make (and lose) a lot of $$$ along the way. I may buy a small position in GLD when the next sell off occurs, but I'll stick primarily to my stocks. Has anyone run into Kevin O’leary on Facebook doing commentary on the economy with current emphasis on precious metals situation? His voice pattern suggests AI, but hard to know. If it is him, he says blaming Trump’s pick for Fed head was just a distraction, (I wondered the same thing) he goes through all the technical stuff but concluded the big banks like jp morgan and others, along with the London markets orchestrated the rapid rise an fall of silver, and they will do it again….

In reply to REB. the argument may be similar, but the rationale isn't quite the same. one big reason is because the mint makes (er, made) many more cents than nickels - so although the loss per coin is much worse for nickels, there are so fewer made the total loss is not nearly so bad as for cents. put it another way - for every nickel made the seignorage loss can just about be made up for by making one quarter. And indeed the mint typically makes more quarters than nickels, so overall between just those two coins the mint comes out slightly ahead. But try to include cents, which was typically about 50% of the entire production of all coins, there's no way to make up for the overall loss. the other big reason is that of course people simply didn't use cent coins anymore, about 90% of circulation was a one-way trip from store cashiers to customers who promptly didn't spend them again. that is not the same for nickels which do get (re)used more regularly along with dimes and quarters. coins are necessary for commerce, and the US gets more value out of coins that get used many times - if a nickel or dime or quarter gets used 100 times before it is lost, worn out, or otherwise withdrawn from circulation, that is much more useful to the economy than a cent that gets used once or twice before it goes out of circulation.
