In other Stack’s Bowers news, the 96 Omega cent lots I’m watching climbed from $11k-$42k to $15k-$50k since yesterday. I think Rick was onto something here with his crystal ball. It looks like any decent set (69/66/66) will climb over $50k by live time. Since the gold cent is what I’m most interested in, I’m thinking about acquiring junk in red (not that MOST of the red cents don’t look like junk already). Honestly, it may be a game-time decision. There are only two sets in the first 50 that I’m intrigued by, so I may have some time to get a lay of the land.

I kept my cursor as far away from “bid now” as possible. There were several auction records set today. It was a rare and beautiful set of coins available. The 1861-O Double Eagle tempted me. It went for $72k. It was a CSA-struck AU-50 with CAC & CMQ. I had a little regret with that one but I’ll survive.

And then there’s the case of the poor 1856-S Double Eagle MS-63 (PCGS/CAC/CMQ). Mr. Stack owned one of the best specimens of this coin … until the S.S. Central America was found. The coin sold for $20,400 this afternoon.
