Ruh roh? A possible foreboding moment? A few products this year have had quality issues, most notably the annual 2025 Silver Proof Set and possibly the Clad proof sets out of San Francisco also. Hopefully, this isn’t a sign of what’s possibly to become of the soon to be released 2025 S American Silver Eagles(9/23), followed by the 2025 S American Silver Eagle with Navy Privy(10/10) and 2025 S Limited Edition Ag Proof Sets(10/16)? However, there has been an increase in inventory of 2,220, 2025 American Innovation(AI) Proof Sets since 9/9 when there were 12,959 at 1:00pm. Now 9:15am ET, we’re at 15,179.

Could this AI inventory increase be due to toned coins or other possible quality control issues? We are soon to find out?
PS There were 6,204 allocated to the ABPP members, so perhaps after they looked at the sets they received, some were returned to the Mint for quality issues? We saw sales reported at 33,135 on 8/24, 47,145 on 8/31 and 48,320 on 9/7. So, I suspect and anticipate a negative sales number on the report due out tomorrow? The set dropped on 8/21.

Yeah Rick, I was looking at the PCGS GSA Hoard version! I finally stumbled on the Regular Strike PCGS listing and saw MS68+ as top grade and approximate value of $400 for your MS65 and as you mentioned, plenty of graded coins to go around! Thanks for the feedback and helping to keep my interest, as well as foster my continued numismatic education. I appreciate your contributions here, often leading me to research and learn more, little by little about this hobby. Thanks to ALL here that also contribute and often lead to my further inquiries and online studies!

John Q, after a little more digging, although Eliasberg owned a 1933 Saint Gaudens, his was not the King Farouk example as you noted.

Apparently Eliasberg had purchased his in 1944 from Ira Reed, whom purchased the coin directly from Israel “Izzy” Switt, who was Roy Langbords grandfather. Eliasberg surrendered his example to the U.S. Government in 1952. Roy Langbord and his mother Joan were the family that had 10, 1933 St. Gaudens $20 that were confiscated by the U.S. Mint/Government/Secret Service after “finding them” undiscovered in a safe deposit box and submitting to the Mint for authentication.

The “King Farouk example disappeared from 1952-1996. Until British coin dealer, Stephen Fenton was arrested in a sting operation while attempting to sell it in New York. Ultimately, a legal battle over the coin ensued, the Government took ownership, however he was at least able to split the proceeds of the U.S. Government’s sale for $7.59 million in 2002 to collector Stuart Weitzman. In 2021, Elite who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased the “Farouk”’ 1933 St. Gaudens $20, for a record price of $18.9 million.

Thanks John Q for the correction on the coin not having been previously owned by Eliasberg. As you’ve been saying, likely there are a few others being held by some tight lipped collectors?

PS KING Farouk also purchased his example in 1944 and a U.S. Treasury Department license for its export was mistakenly issued before the government realized that all 1933 Double Eagles were meant to be melted down and were considered unissued government property.

Cali,
You did fine with your Guess the Grade, It's not easy photograding because sometimes you can't see luster breaks & rub, and lighting is deceptive too. NGC might've graded it a 6? Anyway that coin, the 1882-S $1 is quite common with a 9M mintage. I think you may have been looking at a different coin?
Here's the story behind my '82-S coin from several days ago, in case you missed it? ⇊ .. An 'in the wild' find indeed!
