I don’t like this new development regarding the purchase of coins from foreign countries. Not sure how this additional tariff charge is done and if it is strictly done at the border inspection. How does one pay it? Over the years I received fake text messages from various shipping companies as they are asking for money to pay for the release of an item in customs. Anyway, I guess I’ll find out someday.
Maybe one silver lining is all that cheap Chinese crap regarding counterfeit coins, fake PCGS/NGC coin holders etc. coins won’t be coming into our country.

yeah, buying multiple of the same number is kinda strange logic. if you are going to buy 2 tickets, better odds having two different sets of numbers than one. the chances of winning are so low, that spending extra just to get a larger share of a very large jackpot doesn’t seem worth the extra outlay.

speaking of lottery, makes me wonder if the mint should instead of doing ‘first come first served’ for items with a product limit, just allow people to bid for them in a dutch auction, and whatever the lowest amount bid of all the bids that exhaust the product limit is what everyone pays (this is how treasuries are auctioned, so they should be able to copy that process).

Update 2 (Nov. 5 at 3:10 pm EST): The U.S. Mint sent numismatic news editors the following statement about sales of coins:

Statement Regarding Sales of End of World War II 75th Anniversary American Eagle Gold Proof Coin (20XE) & End of World War II 75th Anniversary American Eagle Silver Proof Coin (20XF).

“The 2020 End of WWII 75th Anniversary American Eagle One Ounce Gold Proof Coin and the End of World War II 75th Anniversary American Eagle Silver Proof Coin were released for sale at noon ET on November 5. Release of these coins resulted in the highest website traffic we have ever experienced, which greatly exceeded our expected capacity. This high volume caused website instability, and customers encountered error messages and in some cases were unable to purchase their desired product. Due to extremely high demand, the American Eagle Gold Proof Coin became unavailable by 12:07 p.m. We are pleased with the initial demand, but are also in the process of evaluating the various customer concerns and system constraints and/or failures we experienced.

Yikes that article mentions a $80-$200 per item flat rate 6 month duty from stuff coming through USPS through foreign postal services. That would be a very rude surprise if you a low value item or even an $80 item. Maybe I’m not understanding that correctly either.

Vinnie, this is all well, well beyond my scope of knowledge by a long shot! All I can say is that with the Tariffs declared by the POTUS, numismatic coins from the Canadian Mint and abroad all trigger Customs and Border Control duties of varying percentages across the board. Coins coming from Canada will definitely trigger a 25% charge as best I can tell and some have reported being charged 35%.

I got the V75 ASE on release day. I wasn’t so lucky with the V75 AGE. I chased that one down on eBay within a week.
