Those memories were seared into my young mind as well. My Kennedy Half Dollar coin collection got off to a fast start in 1964 as a boy, thanks to my Grandparents picking up 38 of the inaugural 1964 Kennedy half dollars from their local banks for us. The 2014-W Gold JFK 50th Anniversary Half Dollar remains one of my favorite coins; the portrait of the President in proof gold is unsurpassable.

JFK had a big influence on me as a kid and his coin is an all-time-favorite of mine. I can still remember November 22 1963 like it was yesterday. Sitting in our picture window in Hyde Park NY, watching it snow outside. Walter Cronkite came on the TV and broke the news. Then everyone started crying. It’s been 61 years since then – just amazing. I personally believe that the American People needed his coin to comfort them through the years following the tragedy.

I finished my Lincoln Shield Set tonight. I have everything in a Dansco 8104. Again, I purchased a large number of Mint Set singles for the Lincoln Cents. I will say the “D” mint coins were crap and the “P” mint coins were really good. However, no PLs this year – a big disappointment. This is the last year for the Lincoln Shield Cent. But 2026 will most likely produce Shield Cents with the Dual Date. So, the scarcity/end of the line hunt may not be over yet. Proof Set mintages are diminishing and 2025 will be a good year for Proof Lincoln Cents. But remember, the 1950 Proof Set had a mintage of 51K. Enjoy the pic. That is not a scratch on the proof – it’s a cat hair.
